When they apply less rtv - oil pans leak, when they apply more rtv oil pickup tubes get clogged.

Not to mention TRUE high pressure tolerance RTV is actually more expensive then a standard gasket. So….you know this isn’t going to end well

@@InfoumusMOBB not to say your wrong but does this car need supper nice rtv when the car is only pushing 350 hp max, like maybe with a 500 hp car it might be necessary?

The problem with rtv is that a small piece breaks off in your engine it will clog oil passages.I love to see old bug eyes on the road I don’t think the new wrx will last 20 years

There is absolutely a way to produce a perfect bead of rtv. I do it daily… it’s astonishing that Subaru and their robots have fucked it up.. rtv is fine when used properly… but gaskets are hard to mess up too.

let me get this straight :/ (the car manufacturer) managed to make the car production faster and cheaper'' On paper less DIY friendly " But at same time they kept the price's much higher and then Blame it on Supply chain and Chips. WE ARE in GREED INFLATION

RTV is relatively common in the automotive world. And not just for cost cutting. RTV tends to last longer and is less prone to leaking when applied properly. Honda is known to put Honda bond on anything they can. Its good stuff!

Yeah, it's normal for motorcycle crankcases (be they flat type motorcycle engines or otherwise) to be assembled with RTV like Threebond 1211-100.

Assuming it's the same issue with the Outbacks? - I have (well had) a 21' Outback Touring XT, 17,000 miles. Dealer told me the oil pans had a slow leak, that the RTV gaskets had to be redone. When I picked the car up, it rattled, so they took it again and said they must've bent the ac pipe when they dropped the engine. They fixed the rattle. I picked the car up last Monday, drove it two miles. Tuesday morning I was taking our son to the airport, and it burned up on the Bay Bridge. Car's totally gone, we were lucky to get out alive. Shoddy work. Few questions: when did they switch to the RTV gaskets on the Outbacks? You mention that they're seeing issues, shall I assume it's because they're leaking? Should we be worried that not all mechanics know how to reseal properly, that it should've been done more effectively before the cars rolled off the line. If this is a chronic problem, shouldn't Subaru be stepping in with a recall? I imagine our close call, and loss of our pristine car, is not unfamiliar to them at this point. The dealer also said that they switched to a different compound after 21' that our 24' OB shouldn't have the same leaking issue. Not sure that is correct. I'm wondering if we want to replace the 21' with another at this point.

Excellent explanation and makes sense. When you explain it like that, IMO, there is no way in hell Subaru will do a recall on this unless it has fully widespread problems and are backed against a wall with a huge lawsuit. That would require so much money to recall or replace all those components that use RTV. And it’s not like they are going to replace them with gaskets.

Our 21' Outback with 17,000 miles just burned up a day after we picked it up from the dealer for RTV gasket redos. If the work had been good it wouldn't've happened. We are lucky to be alive. Spoke to a lawyer who said it's very hard to win these cases, especially when no one was hurt.

while I generally agree, I have to say the new VB is a massive improvement in all around quality so far other than the RTV issue

@Auto Enthusiast besides the lack of an STI... I like mine so far, but still not pleased with the rtv issue. I wish that they at least upgraded the manual transmission.

"cheap RTV that’s not really designed for medium to high pressure applications" What do you mean? RTV is used for the bedplates in engines like Honda and BMW which use bedplate designs for the main caps. Are Subaru using the "wrong" kind of RTV to join the crankcase halves?

I really want to buy a Subaru Outback, but the use of RTV guarantees that I will have to pay for the engine to be removed for repair around 130,000 miles. Shame. I guess I'll stick to Toyota.

our 21' OB started leaking at 17,000 miles. Dealer said they'd fixed it. Car burned up the day after we picked it up. If all the manufacturers are using this crap, or haven't figured out how to apply it correctly (with more success), there should be some serious grumbling about it.

I managed to nab a WRX at a good price this year. It is a 2012 WRX in Impreza hatch.IMO I would highly suggest To be cautious on buying anything past a 2019 model.

It's cause the oil pan is structural. You can't have a paper or soft metal gasket if it's structural.

It’s not structural.. and a standard material gasket has worked for every vehicle for all of time just fine. Polymer-asbestos material is still used in most low temp applications. Crush type metal gaskets are used in high temp applications like on the headers, exhaust, head and the like.

@@richeyrich2203 Sealant has *always* been used to join the two halves of the water-cooled Subaru boxer, hasn't it?! Same for Lycomig aviation engine case halves, same for BMW bedplates, same for Honda bedplates... I don't understand how you could use a gasket around the crankshaft. The same goes for engines with integrated cam caps in the valve cover like some Renault, VW and Mercedes engines -- it would be impossible to use a gasket around the camshafts, so sealant is used. Extending sealant use to other mating surfaces that could potentially use gaskets shouldn't make any difference if the sealant is used correctly.
