About Subnautica:
Subnautica is an open world survival game in development by Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
Subnautica allows the player to explore an aquatic alien planet by scuba diving and traveling in ,
while collecting resources and food to survive. It was released on Steam Early Access on December 16, 2014.
The Xbox release was in August 2016.
The player controls in first-person view the lone survivor of a crashed ship on an aquatic planet.
The main objective of the player is to explore the open world environment and survive the dangers of the planet, while also continuing the story.
Subnautica allows the player to collect resources, construct tools, bases, and submersibles, and interact with the planet's wildlife.
Players must keep themselves adequately hydrated and fed, and must also maintain their oxygen supply while traversing underwater.
They disvocer remnants of the Precursors, an anchient alien species, that used to live on the planet, massive structures and recieve mysterious signals by a strange entity.
The development team opted to use the Unity engine rather than Spark, the engine used for the company's previous game,
Natural Selection 2. Subnautica producer Hugh Jeremy justified this decision because of the different demands that the game places on the engine,
and "because [the team] does not include people working on Spark, it's not appropriate for Subnautica to use Spark. By using Unity for Subnautica,
Spark can continue to develop in certain directions, while Subnautica develops in others. To use Spark for Subnautica would be to try and square peg a round hole."
Subnautica was released on Steam Early Access on December 16, 2014.
Subnautica was originally planned to be released on Xbox One on April 1, 2016, but was ultimately delayed by another month.

Beg to disagree! Rip currents, maelstroms, oceanic storms, the concept of being stranded with no land in reach or even sight, the terrifying and horrible way to die drowning would be--I'm equally scared of the water as I am the things living in it, if not more so :') (for the record, the fear in Subnautica is absolutely of the things inside, but with massive predatory leviathans and no danger by water phenomena that's to be expected)

I think you forgot one of the fears we have when we are in the water, MOBILITY, knowing that something that can swim way faster than you and move or dodge way faster than you could be lurking near you is freaking scary, that kinda applys to ground but you cant jump or try to climb something in water, or picking something up and throwing it at whatever wants to hurt you. This doesn't always apply to subnautica but it still is a fear I have quite often while playing.

Being in the open sea 100 meters under the surface and still unable to see the ocean floor, then look around just to see murky water everywhere is a pretty terrifying experience. It combines fear of water with fear of the unknown, when I found myself in that situation I was so scared a Reaper was gonna suddenly swim out of the murkiness and swallow me whole, which is impossible ingame since you can hear them coming from a mile away but my brain always forgot that in those moments.

I knew it was there, but I could hear the Reaper's far away but I was collecting cyclops fragments and then I hear it again and just turn around and that thing was right infront of me I got so scared that I backed up into a small corner by accident and the Reaper couldnt grab my seamoth, I sat there and waited for it to leave.

@@Zzz-dt2dl True, but the deck is still stacked against you. We humans are laughably easy to kill, we're just bags of meat with no claws, fangs, thick skin, etc. We have no natural built in defenses. However out of all the species on earth, we humans are the very best at killing. We're smart, we don't have claws, but we can make weapons and armor. However, let's say you have a rifle, you run into a hungry grizzly bear. You have the power to kill it in one shot, but if you fail, that bear will tear you apart in a heartbeat. That bear can probably take a bullet and survive much longer than we would if that bear claws our leg and hits an artery. We have the ability to take down a Reaper Leviathan, that is true, but the best option is still running away, because it can kill us a lot faster than we can kill it. All it takes is one mistake and we're leviathan poop. Our ATK might be 1000, but our HP is still 10. Unless we take a freaking gundam down there, we have a vulnerability that other bigger predators don't.

"This ecological biome matches 7 of the 9 preconditions for stimulating terror in humans." First time entering a blood kelp biome. That said, let me tell you a story: Back when the game still was in early access, they still had the terraformer in it, that's when I bought it and played it the first time. I really wanted the moonpool but couldn't find any fragments, so I looked up coords for it. Those coords were from the big wreckage behind the green island. I didn't have a any upgrade for the seamoth and the wreck was over 300 m deep (don't remember the exact number anymore). I went down to right above the 200 m mark and hovered there in my seamoth, staring down into the nothingness. Several minutes passed until I could muster the courage to finally get out and start diving deeper (yes, I have thalassophobia, and this game is a real challenge for me). I had just left the seamoth, .... and all of a sudden my pc bluescreened. And I thought, ok ... I'm not meant to be down there. Took me a few days to start the game again.

A thing that scared me pretty good was when you just swam around the surface for fun, and then you look down and you can’t see the bottom at all. First time this happened to me, i got pretty scared. But it got worse. EXPLORATION SPOILERS FROM HERE: I swam down for a minute (had no seaglide) and i still didn’t see the bottom. It became darker and darker, and the sea emporor message with “what are you” came up. I had no idea such this was in the game and i just sat there and kept swimming, only this time my jaw was down. I saw a glimpse of a sea treader, (again, no idea it existed) and i was pretty creeped out, seeing what different things can rest deep down after swimming for so long is pretty unsetteling. Then my oxygen ran out, and i felt different. This game is awesome!

Didn’t get scared of it cause I saw them go in and out mushrooms before I got close, but what creeped me out was just how dark it was and the eerie purple light. The place felt...off.

There something far scarier than the fear of being alone and that is the fear of not being alone, especially after you hear the warpers for the first time. Also with the leviathans there is a fear of something bigger but trough the game there is also a fear of something very small, the Kharaa virus. When the yellow things grew on my hands i got the same feeling i got when watching chernobyl. Most likely because it is a threat you cannot fight or run away from and even worse you cant even see it.

I was never really scared of this game at all, I was always playing with my friend and talked and he was scared. But one tome he left to use the bathroom, and those 2 or 3 minutes made me feel scared. I was deep and could focus on my surroundings and I started to get chills. Who knows what it making that noise and what lies below me, I can barely see. Then my friend came back and I was fine. Truly insane game.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... Subnautica is good at most of the elements to make you feel uneasy, be it unknown environment, the music, sounds, large open space with not the biggest field of vision... etc.

The sound effects are really good. You're isolated, but you also find out about other survivors who were killed off. I will always remember the cafe guy. He sounded like he was breaking down in the message. Seeing a reaper for the first time, especially outside a seamoth. Subnautica is beautiful, but you always have to be careful.

At one point, I was in my cyclops, driving into the deep. No music, light didn't help at all, my pda didn't give any updates, and I had to use the sonar on the cyclops. Perfect horror movie scene.

The scariest thing about the game itself is a massive void of nothingness, it can LITERALLY contain anything, you don’t know what is lurking, it’s what creates the fear of the dark and the ocean, it’s mysterious, MASSIVE props to the Devs for making this amazing game, and yeah, ambient noises, OH GOD ambient noises worst thing in the game for me, and distant roars too, for those who are new to the game then good luck with distant roars, it’s extremely scary for those who haven’t even seen the game before and are planning to complete it.

2:42 This. This is what made me nauseous with fear in subnautica sometimes. Especially that area around the sparse reef where the water gets endlessly deep. The emptiness and nothingness of the dark waters is quite overwhelming. I'm so scared of this that sometimes I wish a leviathan would just pop up to accompany me. My friend went on a snorkeling tour once and he almost drowned in fear because of the sight of the ocean's "nothingness". When he first told me about the experience, I didn't understand. Looking at pictures of deep water isn't enough. But after playing subnautica, I could relate with the feel completely. You really have to be inside the water, trying to find your way around.

I remember the first time there was a solar eclipse, I was to scared to leave the safe shallows then out of no where it got super dark and a stalker started chasing me and I freaked out and swam as fast as possible to the life pod and just stayed in there until the eclipse ended

Same happened to me!! I was scared as hell to even leave the pod (probably the tallasophobia everyone talks about), then at some point, I decide to be brave and explore a bit further (during the day) but it became pitch dark! I thought I triggered an area with a monster or something but one of my friends told me it was an eclipse lmao. There are many of those but now I know better.

At first, I wasn't scared at all. Then, my first seamoth with all my best stuff got crushed by a reaper, and I realized how insignificant I was, and how quickly I could lose everything.

Warpers are by far the most scary things in subnautica imo, there's a shit ton of them, they're hard to keep track of and they can kill you so much more easily than something like a Reaper which you will see coming 90% of the time

The fear of something destroying my vehicles when I am either in or out of them, plus the constant dread of creatures basically jump scaring me if I’m not careful keeps me on the edge of my seat every moment when I play subnautica

The big one that did it for me is how the game plays with audio, in some cases the lack of it, in some cases of the heavier music for either not much reason or not really any reason and so on, they do a really good job at matching the music to each part of the game, each area and so on

Not garunteed, but there could be jumpscares depending on how you play, I'd say the lava zone, and the aurora are 2 places you should be careful of when it comes to jumpscares

Subnautica is brilliantly, deviously good at invoking a sense of dread by using little cues the player doesn't even notice consciously, like maybe the music suddenly stops and things go quiet, maybe all life suddenly vanishes, things that tap into danger triggers we developed fir survival millions of years ago. In the jungle when all the small animals disappear and everything goes quiet, it usually means there's an apex predator like a lion or or a tiger lurking. Our brains puck up on cues like that even in video games, and even if we don't consciously notice the signs.

I have made about 5 full playthroughs in Subnautica, and I can honestly say that getting seen, caught, and crunched by a Reaper Leviathan is terrifying EVERY...SINGLE...TIME. No matter how many times it happens, I still jump in my chair when that monster grabs the Seamoth and flings you about like a chew toy.

tbh, knowledge was actually the scariest part for me cause i've watched heaps of lets players and have read the wiki a lot so I know where everything spawns. That makes those particular biomes way scarier than normal since you know you are walking into a reapers home when you go to the dunes.

The thing that scares me the most in the game is the eeriness. The areas that have nothing but reapers in them likes the dunes and especially the mountains terrify me not really because of the reapers, but because of the eerie emptiness in these biomes. Lach of other animals, few plant life, that scares me the most.

The thing that is most scary is the roars. It’s so ominous because you really don’t know what is making those noises. It could be a reaper you think to yourself that makes you panic and try to find your seamoth as fast as you can.

One time it was about 4:00 in the morning I decided to play subnautica. Xbox still in game preview and I wanted to hit up the floater island. It’s still game preview to remind you and it didn’t render in and I swam straight into the dead zone. I was jumpscared by a ghost leviathan and I was petrified for the rest of the day.

Even after I conquered my fear of Reaper Leviathans in game, to the point where I sought one out delliberately just to take a screenshot, they still show up in my dreams fairly regularly. Something about them has really stuck with me, that roar is just something else. Quite often there willl be two or three of them in close proximity in my dreams, stalking me as I swim.

I once went to the back of the Aurora to find a way in, didn't find anything but some loot and left. I then watched someone else's playthrough and they ran into a Reaper Leviathan just a couple meters away. That terrified me.

When entering the Blood Kelp for the first time, and "Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?" When entering the Dunes for the first time.

The worst part of it for me, is the massive drops beneath the ocean, and exiting your seamoth/cyclops and not knowing whats beneath you. The other part is how dark it can get in different biomes.

The scariest thing is anticipation of leviathan. I was in the sea treaders path but I thought I was in the dunes. Also the scariest thing is how their is no map. If it goes down far I don’t know if it is a different biome or the void.

For those playing on the Switch, press ➕ then Options and under Graphics change the Color Grading to Off. Visibility increases significantly Filmic looks more realistic and scarier in the dark

Wrost part is getting the cyclops parts I just saw the yellow-ish biome and I was craping my pants, and then "Roaarrree" Damn that was scary, my heart was just exploding, and then something just grabs me by my back and *dead The wrost wasn't the jumpscare, the wrost was the antecipation, me knowing damn full well I was screwd. Loved the video

The absolute scariest thing that ever happened in the game was I was low on water & over behind the aurora bc I wanted to see if there was anything over there (I'd never gotten the guts to do it before) and when ofc it was pitch black bc I'd been over there too long. I knew the reaper was near but he wasn't roaring so I was shaking in my boots already and then suddenly I got an alert that I was out of water and I was going to die. So I got to the surface as fast as I could hoping that would be less scary then swimming through pitch black and not even being able to see its shadow since it wasn't roaring. I was fine...my health was dropping but I was fine for a few seconds. I got YANKED down into the water and got a HUGE chunk of health taken. I couldn't go any faster and I was panicking. I couldn't hear a roar even if I went under water. My life pod was 200 m away. I didn't think I'd make it. I got pulled under again & another big health loss. I was down to like 15 health at this point. I accepted my fate & turned around only to see the reader's tail splash back into the water and disappear into the black void below me. I paused the game and legit cried. I can't handle this game sometimes man. I can't. I made it back with like 1 health to spare but it didn't make it any less horrible.

I'm scared easily and I dont know what I expected starting this game XD I thought it would be mostly chill exploring with 1 or 2 big monsters. BRO. First few nights I couldn't even swim 100 meters from the pod ! This is incredibly scary for all the reasons you mentioned. But I already LOVE this game!

the first ghost leviathan encounter was interesting i was in the blood kelp after i got out of the mushroom biome and i was thinking that was pretty interesting as i swam deeper and deeper to get a few rubys before i got back to my base i just heard a big screech i looked up and saw a giant head approaching me very fast, i abandoned my seamoth but first i took my upgrades just before the leviathan obliterated my first seamoth in front of me

Same shit different story here. I was exploring around the aurora when I lost my first seamoth to a reaper leviathan. I lost the second seamoth to a ghost leviathan while trying to explore. Nearly lost the third seamoth to another reaper and I had to abandoned it. I built my fourth seamoth and one day I decided to go and retrieve my third seamoth. By a stroke of luck I managed to retrieve it but just barely. Now I have 2 seamoths. The third is for exploration w/the cyclops and the fourth being used as a transport/gatherer.

Like Aci mentioned it's the fundamental fear for most humans, fear of the unknown, that makes this game so eerie. I played this game hooked up to my TV at night and turned all lights off. That scared me more than most horror films I've seen. Then I also have nightmares about drowning in big dark seas 😅 Yeah, I'm kind of a thalassophobic... xD

The a bigger fish part can be easily solved: 1. The Khraa Bacteria 2. The Sea Emperor 3. The metro impact (whole game is in a crater) 4. Global warming, I mean ever seen the temperature go below 27C? 5. Starvation, evidence for this i the reaper skeleton in the lava zone, considering that the Seadragon directly overpowers the reapers.
