When did we stop owning the things we buy, and instead become a “member” to a subscription service that we rented our things from?
In this video, we dive deep into how the world transitioned into this subscription service model, but from the consumer side of it - rather than the "business" side of it. The goal here is to recognize that we are oversubscribed.
While we can be brainless in our actions to hit a digital buy button, subscriptions aren't inherently evil. I use them myself. What we need to account for is being aware of our consumption and become wiser with our decisions so that when we buy something - we really know what we're getting into.

Am 60, so I can see the past and the present. In the past, this is why one had many books, cause you could ‘travel’ from your reading chair. Back in the 90’s something called creatively bored was termed…to let your kids be bored so they invented their own entertainment rather than the mom acting like the current day cruise director mother who schedules their kids after school activites…the kids I saw resulting from that scheduled mentality grew into 18+yos who sometimes seemed to exhibit anxiety at the thought of a quiet evening and would run out to the security of that mob mentality of their posse. So they never relaxed into the family unit unity…it’s sad people can’t quiet their mind enough to reflect and have peace of mind. Maybe this is why people act like it’s their civic duty now to comment how how everyone is not living their personal life in the correct manner according to this mob mentality that erupted in 2016 onward…it’s sad and bizarre to not let people just live and let live…everything is not dependent on public agreement. Everyone have different interests and perspectives and speeds we live life at. And we each need to respect and honor it. It’s where creativity erupts and flourishes🎉

love how this really puts into perspective how our consumption habits are changing and not always for the best. I think it’s irrelevant if these billionaires hate us or not, the path we are taking as a society with renting vs ownership is awful. It’s not truly what we want but it’s convenient so most people make the transition.
@roboteen
@roboteen 6 ай бұрын
Billionaires are simply doing what’s best for their bottom line, as they should. If consumers stopped vehemently supporting subscription models, billionaires will have to go back to the old ways of selling a product that you actually own. It isn’t greed making businesses sell subscriptions, it’s consumers buying convenience over functionality. I see no reason companies should change their approach as long as consumers keep paying.

A subplot in "Leave the World Behind" covered this on a surface level: the girl wasn't able to watch "Friends" once the grid shut down because it was streamed. At the end she finds a collection of DVDS in a house and is finally able to watch it. I've been buying my favorite books and movies since COVID. They've already normalized us to renting homes.

Braindead society on autopilot. Don't question anything and just make mindless decisions without giving it much thought. This is a consolidation of wealth and knowledge and it is happening right out in the open. We are being turned into brainless ATM'S and what little money we earn is carved out before the paycheque even hits. I am doing my best to make more conscious decisions while questioning everything with strong critique. Hopefully by keeping myself sharp, both mentality and physically I can continue to enjoy life instead of succumbing to the pitfalls of modern society. I wish all of you the best.

It’s all about what you want in life like if someone wanted to travel all over the world property aside some important stuff isn’t important but a detriment and if you want to really live in a space and make it your own then you want own as much of it as you can. It’s all about life style and such well there certainly are people that are effectively automaton in the machine there are many who want their own goals and wants in life, and they balance these goals and wants with how convenient, expensive, or comfortable certain things would be. Basically have some faith in humanity because dumbing down everyone to braindead but you being special does have a superiority complex that of some sort in there. Ultimately if you can try to help people like this KZfaqr is exposing the decline in ownership and such, it don’t need to be much just the occasional chat with your friends about it, because doing this might make you feel independent and such but ultimately it changes nothing, aspire to make a change to a system you see as flawed or aspire to aspire someone more willing to do so.

We can not expect these entities to be the beacon that extricates ourselves from the pitfalls of a modern society. I won't stand around and wait for someone else to solve my problems. Wow, thank you! Well, you discovered me likely from a video that blew up! Curious for some feedback cause it will truly help - can you dive deeper into what you like about videos, the themes specifically. And what direction would you like to see going forward?
@reep4
@reep4 7 ай бұрын
 @NomadOverNormal Your style of storytelling is the strongest element of your content. You're able to break down these difficult-to-digest ideas and slowly allow the viewer to piece the theme together. This allows the viewer to experience the journey themselves, and that's the hardest part of being a creator. There arent many out there that can do that, and that is what differentiates you from others that I have come across with smaller, growing channels. I think the tough part about your content is that it almost aims for your audience to leave the platform in a weird way. Like in your last 2 videos, the rejection of modern consumption encourages thoughtful use of time. Most who listen to your message would say that KZfaq is one of those forms of media that you can stray away from to add value to life. Its tough both encouraging people to "touch grass" and still engage with your videos. There is a KZfaqr named Abraham who put out a video on social media detox about 2 months ago (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8l_eLeGnKrcgoU.htmlsi=VrNCgmp-A5cm7Evf). He is literally advocating for people to get off of social media and yet he was able to generate a lot of engagement. I'm not sure how you could best tread that line and retain viewership and engagement while still putting out the content that you believe in. I know that a lot of people in Gen Z are advocates for the social media detox and reconnecting with others and maintaining more meaningful relationships. Seeing work life dominated by technology and Gen Alpha being raised by it has raised some flags for some of us, and we don't want to live that way anymore. it could be interesting diving into that, not sure though. Your content seems more curated for niche ideas, so I don't know if that's the general direction you want to go with it.

It is simple to see the plan. Make every thing so damn expensive that renting or signing up to a monthly subscription is the only option for most. If you own your stuff, your house, your appliances, your car, your media, etc., you don't have to pay anyone to use it, therefore you don't need to toil to pay for it... and you are free...er.

I agree with much of what you are saying. I will say this though, it was quite common in the “olden” days to rent a fully furnished apartment, so that would just be making a come back. Also consider, we have always paid for movies and TV. Movies in the form of tickets and TV in the form of time/ads. I can see why subscriptions are getting popular, you can appear to have things that you normally would not be able to afford. We are after all living in the social media age where keeping up with the Jones, means the whole wide world. I’m glad I am not fully on this track. I use mostly library services, one music subscription, damn Amazon Prime (just in case I need something I can’t easily get locally), one TV subscription (haven’t watched in over two months) and autoship of prescription cat food (ADHD, have a hard time remembering and it is critical).

There is nothing wrong with considering your own consumerism but remember that owning is how we build wealth for ourselves and our family. Producers do want you and do like you, but they want you in your place and controlled so that you don't reach them. The best way to do that is to give you just enough to keep you saited and charge you just a bit more then you have so that your can't invest.

Money is a society wide illusion. We chose to live by the dollar, so we are subjected to the dollar. But if enough people decided, we could break free. No longer sell our labor to the companies that funnel it up to the top. Stop paying for superfluous and manipulative services. Bound together as local communities and supply our labor in only to support ourselves and enrich our communities. Perhaps in such a world we could all live much happier.

@@NomadOverNormal I suppose that people are spending more time engaged in activities that take them away from their lives or replace adventure/challenges in their lives with ones they can experience vicariously through someone else. It's like how you mention boredom being an enemy. I feel as though people are experiencing more of life through other people than before. I also feel as though people (including me) use entertainment to distract themselves from their problems or dissatisfactions to a greater degree than was typical previously.

Part of this was why i switched to Apple. Because I can just buy the phone outright in the store and if i want to I can purchase the insurance on it for 2 years in one lump sum. Yes, its more expensive right there, but I don't got mother fuckers barking at my mailbox every month. It's also why i buy Spotify Gift Cards for my subscription. Fun fact, its also cheaper to do that. I think it was $60 for a 6-month card and the monthly fee was like 10.99. Only saving a dollar but a dollar is a dollar when you broke.

Subscriptions can be a good thing for certain things. Digital consumption services like TV shows is a prime example. It is better to pay a monthly fee for access until I have watched the stuff I want, than to buy a lot of stuff that I will only watch once. Subscriptions don't make sense for non-consumable items like phones or cars. The primary purpose of those subscriptions are to drive up consumption so manufacturers can sell more. Subscriptions for consumable items/groceries fit in the middle. You are buying the products, not renting. They do however replace the typical household "pull" system with a less efficient "push" system which pressures you to consume at the same pace as deliveries arrive.

I'm not sure I'll have too many in the future, if any at all. If the DVDs aren't avalible then... yeah there are other ways of owning media...

C: you know, netflix was originally a rental service much like blockbuster. you rent the movie/show/game and if you like it you go out and buy the DVD/game when you want it. Clothing being rented 'freaking disgusting ew!' seriously, if its not mine with my dead skin cells on it, then I don't want it

@@realferox1218 in the United States its very uncommon for someone to own their phone. Usually they take a loan from the cellular company and pay for the phone like that sort of like how you'd borrow for a car. If you dont pay the phone bill, you have to return the phone because its not yours until you finish paying the loan.

While I agree with the overall argument of this video, some of your examples don't make sense in reference to the video title. Even though the clothing, food, and water filters are examples of subscriptions, you do get to own them. Regarding these and the other physical, consumable items in the video, the argument changes from ownership vs. rentals to subscriptions vs. one-time purchases. It would be a more cohesive video if the overall argument was changed to communicate your opinion on overconsumption and subscription culture.

Clothing subscriptions you literally rent the clothes and return them and get a fresh new set of something. You get to keep them for ad long as you keep paying the membership (check out rent the runway)

You own the clothes in the subscription box from Stately, the first source you use in the clothing section. It explicitly states that on their website. There are differences between your examples and the points you are trying to make. @@NomadOverNormal

But we never really owned anything before either. We might have shelves of physical media, but the devices to play it on are dwindling. We should be demanding a return to broadcast radio and television that doesn’t suck. We used to watch Happy Days, but nobody wanted to buy it to watch over and over again. We allowed it to fail because we demonstrated our willingness to pay for media that we used to get for free. Why do we pay $10-20 a month for ten separate streaming services that we barely watch for that one show we like?

Many subscriptions are simply cheaper than buying. How much music could you buy for 10 bucks a month? Amazon prime gives you Amazon prime Video, some Music, faster delivery, some ebooks and I think some Twitch stuff for just 9$ a month. As a non digital example I would say Public transit, while you cant own it obviously, Im still subscribed to it, because its again way cheaper. You cant blame people for saving money while gaining more comfort.
@NomadOverNormal
@NomadOverNormal 7 ай бұрын
That's actually a fantastic point you make, because that's exactly the justification most people make! The thing is though - not many people spend $120 a year buying physical CD's. Most people when CD's were popular bought a handful per year and that's it. Streaming changed that. Now everyone has access to everything. So the value of each played song is lowered. Each artist makes significantly less money. And people on average are spending MORE on music annually than they otherwise would have. This is exactly the point of the video. It sounds like you're saving money... but are you really..? That's the question.
@twindexxx
@twindexxx 7 ай бұрын
@@NomadOverNormal I agree that people back then used to spend less on music, but they listened to the radio more often and thereby paid by listening to ads or they got the music through other ways. Also music wasn't as accessible as it is today, which limited consumption. The "back in the day" argument often doesn't really apply to topics related to the internet since back in the day the internet didn't exist/didn't exist as we know it and since the demand for music is thousands of years old it's completely normal that we try to increase the availability, which then leads to more consumption. Of course you could say that it's unnecessary, but that applies to like 90% of today's stuff and considering the amount of music consumed to the price it's definitely cheaper for the consumer considering that we would still want to listen to music even if these subscriptions wouldn't exist it's safe to say that other models would have been created which would've most likely been as common and as expensive as the modern subscriptions.

It sucks not to own stuff, but on the other hand, think about the fact that at some point you'll no longer existing on this world. After that happens? What will you own? What could you call yours? You won't be able to access your phone, your computer, you won't be able to change your clothes, you won't be able to do anything. You'll just be rotting there, a few feet below the ground, in a coffin, under the dirt. For me, I'll just choose ownership of stuff that won't give me headaches. If it eats my time, I'd just prefer renting it instead. I don't own a car, nor plan to. I live in an area where I can reach everything by walking or taking public transit. Getting to work? Sure, take the tram a few stops and you're there. Wanna go shopping? Hell yeah, there are so many options, all within reach. Need to go to a library? Have one nearby. The same goes for a gym and a shopping mall. Going to a park? Have a 5-minute walk. I do own clothes and other objects of strict necessity, because reasons. I am not into fashion trends, anyway. If it fits, it sits (and if I like it, ofc). I have T-shirts that are 10 years old and I still wear them. My biggest problem is trousers and shoewear, which get ripped easily. So I have to change these periodically. I started gathering vinyls for music, and I also buy on Bandcamp whenever I can. I do have a Spotify subscription, which I use mostly for music discovery, but I got it on a discount and is the maximum I would pay for a service that mistreats the artists the way it does. I use Steam for games (mainly) since you also own the games there. I just grew up with this way of consuming video games, so I see it as default - no streaming service is gonna steal that from me. If Steam goes away, I'll look for alternatives. For movies, I don't really own any, since it is not something I consume on a regular basis. I am moderately excited about a movie theater in my area being rebuilt (I do not really like how the project looks, but anyway, I'll have a cinema next to me), and I'm also going downtown to watch them in some functional ones. I generally only watch movies and series once, then log them, so I cannot see any reason for me cluttering the house with DVDs or my hard drive with tens of GB for a single movie. And yes, I have Netflix since it is convenient enough to watch a movie this way (although I feel the scarcity of some titles). I do own some books, both physical and e-books, but after I finish them I plan to use the library instead (or other renting service available). The key takeaway from this is: use whatever you have available, whether renting or owning. Aim for owning, but if renting is a more feasible option, just go for it. All that matters is the value you can get from these, and what you leave behind when you leave this world. Peace!
