My favourite Marvel hero is Spider-Man because he is fun and relatable. I also really like Green Lantern because I love Sci-Fi, I also really like the X-Men because they face a lot of real life problems and the characters are just amazing. Superman is also one of my favourites I hate it when people say that he is not relatable and boring, the writers have invented all kinds of obstacles for Superman to overcome. So I think he is relatable something you wouldn't think because of all his amazing powers, he is relatable because he is just a normal guy, he was raised by humans and he acts just like one.

It took me some time to start liking superman as a hero. Years of life experience, being put in positions where you feel powerful, and messing up and understanding that your perceived power isn't everything. Everyone is fallible, and everyone can make mistakes. So in a way, Superman is relatable as an everyman who has all the power in the world, but - in most DC Universes - the restraint to not go mad with it.

I wrote this a minute ago, about why superhero stories matter to me: While watching Bob Chipman's "Really That Bad" video critique about Zack Snyder's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, he talked about why superhero movies mean so much to him that he's willing to create a three-part video series (each video more than an hour's length) criticizing a movie about silly adults fighting each other in spandex. And the thing is, much of what he said mirrors my passion for this particular archetype of movies as well. I'm trying not to use "genre" because superhero movies transcend genre - it can be neo-noir, romance, comedy, science fiction, horror, character study drama, political thriller, crime thriller, and many more. That's one of the reasons Bob mentioned for his love of superhero movies, and aside from this fluidity being one of my reasons as well, I think I speak for many superhero fans as well. And I think the reason I'm compelled to write about this is that, in spite of how popular and ubiquitous superhero movies have become... I still can't help feel lonely at times in terms of being the only one who cares that much about these men in capes, especially around forum communities like this. If anything, superhero movies almost feel like they belong to a younger demographic, and many of the older peers I've acquainted with either have much more serious issues in real life they care about, or they grew up with older movie "genres" like sci-fi of the '50s-'70s or even the westerns of old. I've come across at least one person who has told me that he simply just doesn't care about superheroes enough to be that passionate about a superhero movie I could spend an entire day (or week) raving about. With that being said, why are superhero movies so important for me? Well, to understand my sentiment, one merely has to look back at what storytelling means to each generation. In the 18th Century, we had Greek Mythologies like Hercules, Prometheus and Homer's Iliad; 19th Century, we had westerns and cowboys; 20th Century, mafia fiction, spy fiction and science fiction; and now, 21st Century, the westerns of the modern world as Steven Spielberg observed, the superhero movies - and that was just the first two decades (yes, I'm trying to channel my best Peter Weyland impression). Aside from having the potential to embodying multiple genres, these stories have always been a gateway to explore ideologies and societal cultures reflected in each century. Just like how Greek myths sought to explain the mystical and inexplicable phenomenon people encountered back then through the use of gods and demigods, superhero stories provided a window of not just escapist fantasy, but beginning from the Silver Age of Comics in the '70s, tackled more grounded societal problems of drug abuse and disfranchised minorities - The X-Men, Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Batman, etc. They all evolved as avatars of fiction to play out real life issues like actors on a grandiose stage. They are the gods now. And it is for that reason that someone like me who's tired and frustrated by the stress and mundanities of real life problems that I seek out a more fantastical medium to explore those problems in a more engaging manner. Even as a kid growing up watching American blockbusters like Aliens, Terminator 2 and Back to the Future, I've held this belief that movies can be a gateway to discuss real life problems in an entertaining manner. That belief became more than a little extreme at times back then, such that I believed that the best movies combine engaging entertainment with thoughtful didacticism... and any other movie that fails to do this simply isn't entertaining or intelligent enough. My views have mellowed a lot since my youth, but I do still believe that movies have that amazing potential to talk about life in such a bright and vibrant way - Superhero movies all the more so, with their bright-colored costumes and exaggerated personas. This power of storytelling to grab someone's attention on a global scale while incorporating meaningful life lessons within such entertainment is amazing, and I grew up being impressed by storytelling as a tool. Superhero movies' ability to further improve upon the technique makes me fall in love with it, to see the infinite possibilities this newfound fire granted by the Prometheuses of our time can move us forward as a species, telling stories and shaping our ideologies and perspectives. It all sounds like hyperbole, but reality speaks for itself, how these movies have earned the devotion of billions almost like a newfound religion, a new geek culture zeitgeist that mirrors the Star Wars fandom in the '80s. And that, long story short, is why superhero movies mean that much to me, and why I continue and will continue to write about them so often, from week to week, month to month, and so on. While countless writers out there devote countless hours into discussing politics and societal issues everyday, I simply find it more interesting to do so via a more fantastical medium. And if you'll indulge me as a reader, I would love to discuss with you all of life's various joys and anxieties as well, albeit through the magical lenses of storytelling.

Great video, I agree. I've never been a huge fan of the X-Men, but their parallel to the struggle of minorities and especially Magneto gaining his power by the evil of the Nazis has always intrigued me. Catharsis achieved by reading their struggle and having evil beget evil actions through Magnetos violent means of securing a future for mutantkind. Lends itself greatly to creating a modern mythos.

One other connection between Superman and Judeo-Christian God is in his name. Kal-El. The "El" suffix is typically associated with God, with one of his many names being Elohim, and other divine figures, like the Angels Michael and Gabriel. Lastly, it's also tied to Christ and the name Emmanuel and Noel as the alternative name of Christmas.

Segal was jewish though, so the idea of superman being conceived as a massianic "jesus figure" is unlikely, he more likely intended superman to be viewed like a biblical judge or an ancient israelite warrior like samson or david. Billy B. from wolfenstein (reboot) also exhibits a lot of judge-like characteristics too, lots of biblical allusions in the new order.

Percival Sweetwater Let me guess you watched zeitgeist right? Your conclusions have been proven false many times over. Canaan was a son of Ham and grandson of Noah, and was the father of the Canaanites. The Creator Yahweh was known and worship long before the Canaanite Nation came into existence. You can't get Canaanites without Canaan. All religions borrowed from the original worship of Yahweh, not the other way around. The Worship of Yahweh was from the beginning. Just like the Sabbath day, that is still existing and serves as a testimony to the True Creator who established it after the 6 days of Creation. No credible scholar considers Yahushua/Jesus a myth but a very real person in history. "The lines of mythological construction have been clarified by recent linguistic and archaeological research. The name Joshua, for example, means "Savior," as does the name Jesus. In Hebrew: Yehoshua = Yeshua. Just as the Joshua character filled the savior role of the Jewish nation entering Canaan to conquer it, as ordered by their genocidal deity, so did Jesus fill the Savior role for early Christianity. " No, the name Joshua doesn't mean Savior, it does come from the Hebrew name commonly seen as Yehoshua but that is after the false removal by the Jews of the Yah and replacement with the Yeh to prevent the accidental pronunciation of the Sacred name of the Creator. The original name that the Israelite general's name was change to was Yahushua, and this is the same name the Messiah was given. The name Yahushua means Yahweh is Salvation. The renaming of the Israelite General if you want to understand the deeper meaning is this. Moses represented the Law, the Torah, the instructions for how mankind is supposed to live but the law could not take the Israelites into the promised land, a man called Yahweh is Salvation had to do that. This type points to the Messiah Yahushua, who takes away the sin of the world, our curse for breaking the law. The Law can not get us to the promised land, we need Yahweh's righteousness that was in the Messiah to get us there. We need the Messiah to be justified. The fact that this was the plan and can be seen throughout all the OT, thousands of years before it's happening is a testimony to it's Heavenly origins and not the work of mere men. See Isaiah 52-53. "Christianity" is a man made religion, the Messiah of the Bible did not cause the split between the Jews and non-Jews, he made them one, he made all who believe and follow him to be the Israel of Yahweh. It is men that built up the wall of separation he broke down. You lack understanding and are unlearned, therefore you are twisting scripture to your own destruction. I'm not trying to be rude here but you have listened to many falsehoods which have put you in a very harmful mindset. Yahweh is Just, and the Judge of all! It is always the failure to love, and the build up of wickedness that caused the judgements you see in the Bible. Go back and read the whole thing, prove what you believe is true.
@michaeldeo5068
@michaeldeo5068 5 жыл бұрын
Percival Sweetwater That clearly was nonsense. the term Elohim and the name Yahweh both show up in the first book of the Bible. Elohim means Mighty, and can refer to The Father, the Son, angels, men/judges and even great waters, it merely carry's the meaning of power. Yahweh means HE Exists and causes all to exist, the ONE who is Existence. Elohim is not a name. Your research is terrible, please stop and find yourself better teachers. We see Elohim used IN many Biblical names though. Michael, Gabriel, EliYAh, Daniel etc. "When we read the different versions of the Bible in English, we can see how all the different names simply become translated as GOD or THE LORD. That helps camouflage what's really going on." God is not a name, the word God doesn't even appear in any of the Biblical languages. It is a late addition that was used when the Germanic peoples were converted. It is a germanic word. A very faulty translation, because it does not accurately bring across the meaning the Elohim and Theos have. The term God carries the meaning of the supreme being. Elohim and Theos do not always refer to the mighty one who is the supreme being. The word LORD is a direct violation against the commandment to not add or take away from the word. LORD was used to take away and replace the Memorial Name, the self chosen name of the Supreme being Yahweh. LORD means master, Yahweh means the One whose existence is in himself and the causer of all to exist. LORD does not carry the same meaning as YAHWEH. It was a replacement done to follow in the tradition of the Jews who falsely believe the Sacred Name was not to be spoken. The bible says there are many GODS/Mighty ONES, but only ONE ALMIGHTY , Yahweh. Only Yahweh is the Eternal ONE, and cause of all beings, His only begotten Son, angels and mankind to exist. The Bible says that men became vain in their thinking and imaginations inventing mighty ones that looked like the created things. They worshiped the creation and not the creator. They worship false idols, imaginary beings. There is more evidence that Yahushua/Jesus was a real historical figure than any other ancient figure in history. Even the Atheist Bart Ehrman, a New Testament scholar, would laugh at your opinion. Please stop your embarrassing yourself. When was the last time a "Christian" killed someone for disagreeing with them? Seriously, I don't know how old you are, so I want to be very tactful here but please forget all the stuff you think you know. It's all wrong, so wrong. Start over, find better teachers. I'd seek out people who actually believe the Bible is true if you want to really understand it. Shalom/Peace

Superman truly is the boringest super hero EVER. Seriously. He is intolerably invincible, making no challenge whatsoever. Then the bad guy gets some kryptonite, Superman is almost defeated, then Superman wins at the end. That's every single plot because kryptonite is his only weakness. Maybe he was relevant back in the 30s or whenever the hell he was created, but nowadays, that shit is DULL.

Superman is interesting because of what he stands for. He is a symbol of hope and justice. He is the perfect being. But he's just a guy from Kansas. Aside from the powers he's just a nice guy. That's what makes him not boring for me. His powers don't matter when it comes to Superman, it's what he does with them. And I find that so interesting to think about and why I like the character. At least that's what I think.
