Today, I discuss three reasons why your Tahoe, Suburban or other large SUV/Van may struggle with high bass over 45 hertz. Let me know if you are aware of other issues that contribute to this problem in the comments! Also, if you have topics you want me to cover, add them in the comments. Thank you!

Before I watch the video I think the biggest part in it is that’s where his Cabin gain starts around 45hz I also noticed in my 97 suburban I used to have it really struggled above 42-43hz

Great observation! I had to think about this for a couple hours to come up with advice.

Yes, I get a nice boost around 40-45Hz and then the output drops off dramatically above that. I added some rta shots in my comment on this video.

Here are some details on my experiments. I've tried every combination of sub box location and orientation in the back of the vehicle (behind the second row). They all have very minor changes in frequency response and bandwidth. I always get a drop from 45hz to 60hz of 15dB to 18dB. You can see it on the rta and hear it. So very noticable. As I move the box forward into the second row seating I see changes. Putting the box in the front passenger seat had a large change. I was getting really good bass up to my crossover point around 80Hz, but I obviously can't keep the box there. I tried a smaller box (sealed 10") and put it in the passenger foot well. Great output from 80Hz to where the sub naturally rolled off around 40Hz. The music sounded great and I could almost live with it, but I want that strong low end. So the plan is to continue my rear build of a 7.5 cu ft ported enclosure with three 12's and just have it play 45Hz and down. Then I'm going to try some small sealed front enclosures up front. Maybe a sealed 8" under the passenger seat or even both front seats. Or maybe mount it under the dash on the passenger side so there's still good leg room. It will play 50Hz to 80Hz and just fill in that missing upper bass. Obviously this adds complexity. You need another amp channel to run it and another dsp channel (if your run a dsp). With no dsp you'll need an adjustable subsonic and high pass to get that narrow range of output. Yeah, thats the plan. An extra sub up front. Lol

What subs are you currently running and what frequency is the box tuned at?
@JasonWW2000

@@caraudiolab I have a 10" JL Audio in a sealed box. A 12" Pioneer in sealed and ported and I've tried tuning frequencies from 27Hz to 35Hz. Then I've got a JBL W12GTi in a ported box were I've tried tunings from 27Hz to 45Hz. So it's nothing related to the sub or the enclosure. I can fire a sealed box into free air and look at its rta and get that perfectly smooth output curve you see in software programs. Then take the box and close it into the rear of the vehicle and I see the peak at 45Hz and the massive dip at 60Hz. So it's strictly the vehicles effect that is causing the change in frequency response. Now keep in mind that if I move the microphone or sit in the second row seats you can then hear more output at 60Hz. The subs are actually moving quite good at 60hz. But if the sub is in the rear and your listening in the front, you see/hear the peak around 45hz and the dip around 60hz.

@@caraudiolab I think I have enough speaker cable that I can measure the response of the sealed 10 firing into free air then put it in the front passenger footwell and measure it's response and then put it in the back of the vehicle and measure its response and then overlay all three together to show the effect of the vehicle and listening position.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 9 ай бұрын
@caraudiolab Heres an overlay of a sealed box in 3 different positions, and same volume level. Its output naturally rolls off under 40Hz so don't let that distract you. (In next post) You can really see how you get a cancellation of some kind with a sub in the rear and when you measure from the front seat. 50Hz and up dramatically gets cancelled. A ported box in the back gives you great low end 45Hz and down. My door mids come in around 80-90Hz so I'm going to be adding some type of driver in the footwell to fill in that 50Hz to 80Hz energy I'm missing.

Hmmm..... but my resonant frequency changes when my windows are rolled up or down and how many of them are rolled up or down right? See currently i have two 15s in a much too small box with a large port that is sitting in the back seat of my car. All windows up and my output falls off around 28hz.(all windows down is about the same) But with just my back windows down my output doesnt fall off till about 22hz 🔥💪 But this box is really bad. My subs are ripping it apart. Im about to build a new box to replace it but cant figure out how to account for my cabin airspace/cabin gain, especially trying to consider the windows!(which i really want to do and get right after seeing just how much of a difference rolling my back windows down, ~24hz is literally over twice as loud than windows up lol, i need this power across all frequencies 😅)

What can i expect for a 170 sprinter van? I know it will probably struggle with upper frequencies too. I was going to start with a 2.3 cu ft sealed box for my SQL 15 on 1400w. Experiment with positioning and then probably go ported 22-27hz. I know my cabin is huge…i mean as big as it gets BUT it will be sound deadened and have 1/4 wood walls and is a perfect rectangle. I’m hoping gain is substantial

You probably won't have much difficulty with the sealed box. Switching to a ported tuned in the mid 20's will kill your upper bass though. I bet you will struggle with bass above 35-40 hertz in that situation. Are you planning on playing lots of rebassed music? I bet that van will like playing around 30 hertz, that is probably close to the cabin frequency.

How bout a 2011 rav 4, gonna get one soon might do 3 fifteens sealed in a box, subs facing back with the center one straight back and the left and right one turned at a 45-degree angle for a triangle shape, less square, better air movement.

@@johnnycorn7225 Sure, they would work okay. Are your planning on running sealed or ported? It might be tight ported, unless you run a c pillar build. How many cubic feet per sub you plan on?

@johnnycorn7225 10 ай бұрын
@@caraudiolab I really dig the even and tight response from a small air volume sealed alignment and it's ability to dig lower than ported in the lowest frequencies. 2-2.5cubes per 15 each using I.A. lethal injections or Ssa gcons( very similar drivers well suited for sealed) from above the box would look like \_/ with subs facing backward, and lots of bracing as well. I've done the math and it will definitely fit, and like you said after years of building boxes I found that fully square shapes don't let air flow properly and I'm a huge fan of higher bass because I listen to lots of metal too and love bass drum impact alot!

@@johnnycorn7225 Just make sure you have adequate space around the box for the bass to bounce back into the cabin, you should be good to go!

Trunk builds are hard. I think I would wall my trunk if I was putting a system in a car with one. My car does fine from 30 hertz and up but it hates below that, it just doesn't play well. My buddy had a Nissan Sentra and he has the same problem. Hi car is walled but just doesn't like playing lows.

Are you saying the resonant frequency of your enclosure is 40Hz or that the resonance frequency of the vehicle is 40Hz? So are you seeing a bump in output at 40Hz or a bump at 50Hz. What vehicle do you have and what type of enclosure? A simple box in the trunk or a sealed off trunk with the sub firing towards the rear seat?
