Another factor missing from this analysis, the defensive duties involved in the role change. I don't think Sancho has the tenacity to do it in the middle. Foden has more of it as well as his ball retention abilities so I think its only half of the story being looked at here.

I actually agree, Sancho is being deployed as a winger that holds his position most of the time in united and despite him having exceptional dribbling and ball carrying, he doesn't create chances from out wide, Antony is more fitted to that role. He excels at carrying the ball from outside to inside and from defence to attack, he also plays better with people around him. He'd be much better if we gave him instructions to drift into the middle with the ball like a mix of an inverted winger and a mezzala.

Absolutely agree with you, I think he could be eased back into the side as a backup for either Rashford or Bruno playing this exact half-space role, either starting wide and drifting in or starting centrally and roaming out to the half-spaces

Not sur how relevant this is but when I play FM I use him as an Advance midfielder with the support role from the wings. I then make Bruno as an attacking midfielder with the attack. With Rashford I make him as an inside forward from the left wing. He gets so much assist this way as he passed to those two along with the striker I use. It sort of reminds me of the days of David Beckham where the creative midfielder assists from the wings. I find that if I make him an inside forward he slows the pace of the game as he hasn't as good a beating the opposing defenders himself. He reminds me of Mesut Ozil after Alexis Sanchez left Arsenal; he can assist but cannot score himself.

Sancho, Donny and Anthony ABSOLUTELY CAN work in the same system. However, not the system currently implemented at utd. No surprise that these 3 talented players are not flourishing at utd. A better system and that team is balling. You can't buy control-based players and then wonder why they are struggling when you prioritise a counter-attacking style over control. Sancho is better going through the middle that's were he can express himself more. some players when you shackle them its hard for them to do there thing. when at Dortmund you seen him in the central position a lot more and had a lot of assists. I think the same, you missed a huge and obvious thing in the analysis. Sancho doesn't have the pace to be a winger in the PL. I remember De Bruyne being played in the wings and failing miserably. Sancho has immense technical ability and he can be deployed as the no 10, or Mezzala. Now the thing is how does he fit in the team. I think Eriksen gets rested. Bruno moves to the Eriksen role and Sancho comes in as the 10 or sacrificing Antony on the right wing and changing the formation to accommodate Sancho. But ETH is not gonna do that because of his bias for both Eriksen and Antony although we all know that a confident Sancho would be devastating.

To get Sancho to a decent level: - play him on the RW - Dalot/Awb need to make fast overlapping runs - needs to cross more - needs to dribble in and shoot more

Sancho in a midfield three makes no sense to me from a tactical perspective. Bernardo Silva is able to do it because he has industry and awareness that Sancho doesn’t have. He’s a bad presser, bad tackler and is not tenacious. He is a winger, the issue is he’s lacked the confidence to take defenders on 1v1 and make he’s scared of making mistakes. What he needs I believe is support to gain his confidence back, not re-write of who he is as a player

Sancho haa never been a winger, in traditional sense or even inverted one. He doesn't run with the ball, or beats players at speed, even when he was at his peak at Dortmund. The type of player that Sancho is, is a wide playmaker. He should be treat as such.

Agree the change in where a player plays, even be it a change of as little as 5-10m, can make a big difference as to how they perform. This is accentuated when a player such as Foden, Gascoigne, and Sancho do not have great flat out speed, such as like a Giggs, Lee Sharpe and Kanchelskis, but instead have really good acceleration over the first 15m or so. If they have high technical skills too, then when combined with acceleration and excellent Change of Direction and intricate skills, these players can wreak havoc when more central, and are far better employed in more central roles. The roles you described on the video are more or less, the outside is the flying winger like Giggs who goes up and down the flank, whereas the more central positions are like the old inside forward, and when played with a back 3, it looks like the formation I played in at Juniors in the late sixties, namely with one centre half, two wide defenders, two wing halves, two inside forwards, two wingers, or modern day attacking full backs, and a CF. So agree Sancho is not a winger at all, as he does not have the blistering pace needed for that position, but he has acceleration, and very neat footwork skills, and so suits more central positions. If Ten Hag wishes to play a system that finds a place for him that will suit him will decide whether he has a future at Utd, as he is no winger, neither left, nor right!!! He's actually an old inside forward, I know, for I was one too, despite playing winger at times!!!

Sancho is a confidence player and his confidence is shot. With Ten Hag rebulding, cutting deadwood, getting rid of players that don't suit him and his system and being a no-nonsense type coach, I do not think Sancho will be able to rebuild himself at United. I think he will have to do a Edwin Van Der Sar and go to a smaller, europa league level club, play every week, have a coach that will put an arm around him and make him feel good and then try again at the top club.

Sancho seems a bit fragile mentally right now. I think Ole was happy to allow the players freedom which often resulted in individual brilliance followed by decline. Ten Hag will coach him hard and when united get an established forward like Osimhen there will be natural synergy. I'm very interested to see how he develops in the next 18 months.

This is a fantastic video that nails it. He’s best in the offensive half spaces. The problem is that United keep buying players that all need to play the same spaces. They’ve needed a deep lying player maker since Carrick retired which would stretch the field to allow the space for a player like Sancho to create spaces. Bruno is a solid player but is too slow and Eriksen offers nothing defensively so as result United is unbalanced. I would sell Bruno and play Sancho as the 10/free 8 allowing wingers like Antony and Garnacho/Rashford to make runs off him.
