I have the new 2021 KLX-300 in camo and agree with your assessment. Its a wonderfully fun bike and handles great. I can pick it up by myself with no problem (I laid it down going up a hill when I got stuck in a rut...doh) and Im a 53 year old guy with a beer belly! The only downside to the bike that I have found is the fuel range. Usually not a big deal but I would not want to be out in the desert somewhere without a spare gas can. I have a z900rs for serious street riding and longer trips but guess which bike I find myself on more? Yep the KLX-300 - its a hoot in the twisties, trails, and just "easy" to handle overall. I'm looking into a few mods to uncork the engine but otherwise no real complaints, Its one of those bikes that maybe doesnt do anything "great" but it has zero bad manners and as a whole that makes it a great bike,

Regarding small stock fuel tank. Just get the rack and the 1 gln Roto pack gas container. It’s nice to distribute the weight in the front and the back. Also if somebody is in need of gas it’s very convenient. Now you have a 3 gallon capacity- problem Solved!😉

I traded my 2018 KLR for a 2021 KLX300 last month. All I really miss is the range. For the riding I do, the KLX is easier and more fun. Also, the KLX has opened up single track which I'd NEVER consider doing on the KLR because I have more brains than balls. For long range riding on pavement, the KLR wins hands down. But that's not the riding I want to do right now. Instead of getting up early to ride 100 miles to get to the dirt road riding I typically do, only to have to ride back home 100 miles in the dark through deer-infested TX hill country, I will now be taking the KLX in a toy hauler, camping out the night before, riding all day in an environment where the KLX is better, and then camping out again and hauling home in the morning. All that being said, I wouldn't put money against me buying another KLR at some point in the future. Then again, if I want a more road-worthy ADV bike, perhaps I'll go for something with more power than the KLR.

@@maktoobyt2009 There's not an aftermarket tank big enough to give the KLX the range of the KLR. If there was a tank that big, I don't think it would be a good fit on the KLX anyway, huge tank on a little bike. There are fuel bladders that one could carry to match the range of the KLR. That's what I'd do if I was planning a long distance ride on my KLX300. The fuel bladders may be a bit cumbersome, but when not filled with gas, they fold down to nothing and can be left at home whenever not in use.

The 2022 KLR 650 is a better highway bike than the KLX 300. No comparison. However the older KLR 650s shake rattle and roll. I'll be getting the 2022 KLR650 because most of my riding will be highway dirt roads and fire roads, mostly highways. Thanks for your review. Aloha

I have a 2021 KLX300S and a 2018 KLR 650. I’m talking stock bikes here. The KLX won’t come close to the KLR on the road. For ADV riding the KLR also wins. The KLX will not have the weight carry capacity of the KLR for travel, nor the fuel range. The only area the KLX wins is in the off-road riding. Why, the 6th gear doesn’t add much to the KLX’s gear box, you barely notice a difference between 5th and 6th gear. That the one let down with the KLX.

I kinda agree I have owned 2 klr's and the klr on the road was nothing to be desired my 250L is much more comfortable than any of my klr's but the klr is not bad, the klr in the techinical is work and loaded with gear is a white knuckle machine. I agree for the street and fire road and scree riding it is a great bike but the klx like my crf250l will do just fine on the road, the klx is not to be packed down keep it light tight and do it right mode and offroad being 150lbs lighter that a big deal to me but all being said I love both bikes

@@690ADV I agree that both bikes are great bikes. Like I mentioned, my one disappointment in the KLX is road riding. I'm a bit disappointed in the performance on the road and thats why I never bought a 250cc dual sport, I was hoping the 292cc engine would have enough to make commuting to work possible, because I have to ride the interstate for 10 miles, or so. Maybe a power commander and a full exhaust will transform it into what I need? Maybe that would wake up 6th gear? Until that time, my KLR (or another similar mid size bike) is staying in the lineup for me, the KLX just isn't a one bike solution for me.

I went to buy the klr650 but when I saw the size I decided on the klx300. It my first bike. The only one rode before was a suzuki 450. I hope it has enough power. Have to wait for it since its a 2023.

Good video and well thought out. As a guy who has to do a 2 hour highway slog just to get to the twisty roads and fire roads/trails I want to ride, I think the Versys 300 splits the difference quite nicely. Big tank, good wind protection, can do 75 all day long without breaking a sweat and splits the difference on weight pretty well too. You can find guys on KZfaq doing way more gnarly stuff on a Versys 300 than I will ever do. I can only have one bike at the moment, and twisty roads are actually more important to me than gnarly off road, so I'm probably more of a Versys 650 guy than a KLR guy at the end of the day. That said, I've seen some guys on here doing some pretty technical stuff on a Versys 650 with 50/50 tires. If I could have more than one bike and owned a pickup I would probably have a KLX and a Versys 650, or better yet, the upcoming Tiger 660 Sport...

I own a 2024 klx 300 the only bad thing about it is the seat. Other than that it is the perfect bike. The next best option for a street oriented standard or adventure bike is the versys x 300

I've always thought that if you can only afford one bike then it's the KLR, but if you can afford two then it'd be the V-Strom/Versys and one of the 300's. I've got a KLR so it looks like I'll buy the CRF300L because the KLX300 isn't available in Australia.

One thing I find ironic is the carry capacities of the KLR and the KLX. Even tho the KLR is a much bigger bike, according to the owners manuals, the carry capacity of the KLR is 401 lbs while the KLX is 406 lbs. 🤨

3-4 gallon standard tank on the klx300 plus a $95 rear rack would change the game. Klx would be the go to platform.

One thing I hate is people that do “why one is better then other” that have no experience with either bike. Make reviews when you test drive them or own them… not just spec sheet reviews

Great practical advice. It's so true that most of us have the long haul dream but rarely get a chance to travel for long distances over long periods of time. QUESTION: I am 6'2" and 215 lbs. Is a KLX300 going to manage my weight and height. That's really my only hesitation. I was under the impression that the heavier bike might be better for this reason. But, I love the light weight of the 300. Please advise. I plan to do some very simple trails, nothing really knarly, weekend highway trips, no cross county epics. Thanks again.

I sat on both and I just like the small size of the KLX I already have a T7 so having a lighter bike was a no brainer. Best combo for me a KLR and a KLX yeah nice combo too

The KLX 300 with a T Rex racing windshield has better wind protection than the KLR and add their rear rack and a roto pack you probably have a similar range. But the suspension on the KLX 300 is sooooo much better than the KLR. And besides who wants to ride the highway........

A used '18-20 KLX250 for $4k is a better option than the new 300 OTD for almost $7k. Pipe, 02 delete, AL rear sprocket for $300-$500 total makes the same rear wheel power as the 300. U have more ground clearance and less rake too, dunno why they lessened it on the newer ones

The KLX 300 would go viral IF it had a bigger tank, tubeless tires, and a 31" seat height. Nothing could touch it as a great bike for smaller riders who want a short solo touring ADV bike.

I've been trying to find what I want and I think you've just led me to it. Been back n forth on grabbing a 650-1300 or something that I can throw in a truck and still pack out for a couple weeks. Thing is the weight. I'm recovering from back injury, relearning how to walk after 6+ years. So in theory, I should be able to lever up 3-400 lbs like I used to. Maybe ha. Yes, a bike sounds like a great idea and don't care what anyone else says. I figure I survived being shot stabbed blown up bleeding out hung and a seriously pathetic attempt to jump off a bridge a motorcycle just doesn't seem that dangerous. Think I'd like to park, load my gear, and ride up a mountain, over to a river or lake, canyon, things like that. Hunt fish and only come back to restock or move to a new area. A little bike to run around the towns I pass through hoping I might get lucky and spot my kids someday. Anyway, that 300 I'll definitely be looking into. Appreciate the video bud.

KLR 650 will beat any new bikes with reliability and cost per mile. Same with DR 650 and DRZ 400. This is the reason they should stay on the market. If he bike is a bit too heavy, well build the muscels. Do not be pansies! Soon you will have to do engine rebuild like with crosss bikes. This is comming, like with cars, where small engines and huge costs per mile, as you will have fiddling with an engine every year.

I had the klx 250 and really liked it but super squirrelly on the highway. I would hope the 300 would be better. The only draw back for me is the klx is only 3# lighter than my 690!😀

You nailed it again. I have come to the conclusion that if manufacturers wanted to hit most of the markets needs for 1 cylinder DS bikes they would make a 300cc, 500cc & the 700cc. Too bad no one manufacturer has completed that trifecta. KTM is close but not quite. Thanks for another great video & looking forward to your next Big Bend video!!!

Man that a tough one, probably the KLX300 only because it has a better suspension the engines are about the same they are about same price and I thought the honda could have done a better job on the suspension but you will win with either! and I also really like the camo to honest....😂

How would you compare the KLX300 and the Suzuki DS650 for a new “older” rider? The fuel injection is very appealing on the 300. Probably doing more off road than on but like the option for short around town on road.

Looking to get my first bike. I’m in Colorado and I plan on doing weekend trips a few times a month up in the mountains. I can’t find any used klx300 so I’d buy one new. However, for a little bit more money, I can get a 690 enduro used. Having experienced both, what would you suggest: a used 690 enduro, or a new klx300?

Joe - you are sooooo spot on with your comments and analysis..."Again" - Out here in AZ - I never see a KLR out in the dirt / desert - except once. Guy not riding, just sitting there, with shorts on. Weight is a huge "thing" to think about... I'd take that nimble 300 over the underpowered top heavy pig any day of the week.... Don't worry, it's coming - With the kind of riding I do - the KLR does not work. It comes down to the rider & the kind of riding they do, or intend to do. "ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY FUCKING SUZUKI DR 650" !!!!!!! - Love your work !!!!!

650 will go anywhere, but SLOWLY.....and you're Not going to have fun beyond Trails, 450lbs is a BIG difference from 300lbs..........a 250 or 450cc will float right over obstacles that will force a 650 to a Crawl or Stop.
