The Brazil nut tree is one of the tallest trees in the Amazon rainforest. Its large nut capsules weigh up to 2kg and can be cracked by just one animal: the agouti.
The tree and the rodent help sustain one another - but the Brazil nut has some other surprising partnerships, too. Learn more about this jungle giant at the heart of a unique circle of life.

It's so interesting how nature works. A squirrel forgets where it's buried a few nuts and bam there's another tree. Thank u Terra Mater for another great video, happy holidays to all who read this.

I'm from Brazil, theres a nut tree half an hour from my home. I live in the southeast so the tree is not that common on this part of our country, but we call it sapucaia its a beautiful tree with purple flowers wich atracts people an animals, you just have to be careful when nearby so you don't get hit by a falling seed capsule. In my regions there aren't many frogs becuse it's a quite urbanized part of the country, but when people find an empty capsule we usualy turn it into flower pots for orchids. Its nice to see a lot of people here, watching and learning about some hidden parts of my country that aren't usualy shown to the world. Have a nice cristmas everyone

Wow nice. Maybe you can replace them with clay pots so the frogs can have places for their tadpoles.

Apropos of nothing, one of the little proteins which the hypothalamus uses for hunger, is called the 'agouti-related peptide'. And with that, went my first introduction to the rather unusual word 'agouti'. And with the assist of Terra Mater (and it's second-to-none talent at bringing arcane animals to the viewing audience), for a second time I meet with 'agouti'. The peptide though essentially prevents a 'I've had enough food now' signal from getting through by antagonizing a key receptor to satiation.

Kind of a risk on the tree's part, putting all of its eggs in one basket. If the agouti were to go extinct or even change its diet, the tree would be doomed. Good thing rodents tend to be strong survivors...
@hemerocallis463

The competition in the forest is too high, such that many species have to become specialists. That's how they manage to gain a niche among all trees. It also reminds us how delicate and fragile these species are. If one of them go extinct, others may follow. That's how amazing and precious the ecosystem is 😊
@Mysikrysa
@Mysikrysa 2 жыл бұрын
Possible evolutionary traps like this are not rare. The species co-evolve together to the point they need each other. That´s why it´s very important to protect all species because some of them might be crucial to the ecosystem, like in this case. If agoutis disappeared, these trees would too, and they are large, significant species which influences the forest and serves as a home of many small species, so the forest would look very different without agoutis.
