Why The Belgian Pro League Is An Underrated Talent Factory!

Two years ago, we put out a video explaining the possibility of the Belgian Pro League and the Dutch Eredivisie merging, something that would have been named the BeNeLiga and had previously been experimented with in the domestic womens game and more recently in basketball.
The idea was, that in the face of European competitions becoming increasingly dominated by elite clubs from Spain, Germany, Italy, France and in particular England, that establishing a cross-border league could increase the quality of competition top Belgian and Dutch clubs face on a weekly basis, generate bigger television revenues and improve the overall standard of the domestic game, providing a more robust competition to rival those over the borders in Germany and France.
But while Belgian clubs voted in favour of exploring the possibility of a BeNeLiga in 2021, with then-Anderlecht manager Vincent Kompany one of its most prominent backers, their Dutch neighbours didn’t follow suit, and talk of a merger has since gone quiet. But Belgian clubs look stronger than they have done in years, at least in terms of performance in Europe.
Union Saint-Gilloise, who were still battling for promotion in the second tier at the time of the 2021 vote, have made the quarter-finals of the 2022-23 Europa League, while both Gent and Anderlecht have made the quarters of the Europa Conference League, with the latter beating a strong Villarreal side to get there. In fact, no country provided those competitions with more quarter-finalists this term than Belgium, pretty impressive given France have only provided one - Nice - across all three European tournaments, with Spain providing just two - Real Madrid and Sevilla.
And considering no Belgian side has reached the semis of any continental competition since the 1990s, it’s fair to say its domestic game is in good health right now, despite a poor showing at the Qatar World Cup suggesting otherwise. And while their national team’s golden generation of the 2010s has run its course, the Pro League continues to produce players who go on to achieve bigger things overseas.
So what is the secret to their success? On today’s EFD Explained, we’re going to find out..

Nearly 10 minutes and 1 single mention of KRC Genk (for Ndidi of all players), nice mauve bias there. They produce both excellent academy players and buy great underrated foreign players for cheap every generation whilst being among the financially healthiest clubs in the league. The Champion's League would literally not be the same without Genk players, can the same be said about Anderlecht?

This video should be named "how Anderlecht is un underrated Talent Factory!" Other clubs are working hard and the fact that Club Brugge U23 team is way above Anderlecht's U23 in the second division says a lot. Club Brugge have provided within a single year players being sold or to be sold for at least 10 millions €: Loïs Openda, De Ketelaere, Noa Lang, Bjorn Meijer, Tajon Buchanan and Ferran Jutgla. Arne Engels is powering up in Augsburg. Genk got Khalidou Koulibaly, Sander Berge, Timothy Castagne, Ruslan Malinovskiy, Leandro Trossard, Wilfrid Ndidi, Sergei Milinkovic-Savic,Thibaut Courtois and Kevin De Bruyne and you've heard of Bilal El Khanouss at the WC 2022. Gent got Jonathan David, Samuel Gigot, Kalinic. Standard got Benteke (also Genk), Dante. Actually, it's pretty nice talking about Belgium: they provide nearly no world-class players but still very decent ones, even for the top leagues.

Club Brugge U23 team is way above because they have another filosofy on that u23 team. They've also played in the second league before and were very very poor. We are a very underrated producer of talents indeed imo , and with English teams buying or getting stakes in clubs here i think down the road it's only gonna get better for talents to develop here , Brighton and usg are the best example , and tho not being the best teams currently, i think it's a good thing , for example lommel sk can provide for man city , rwdm for crystal Palace , ohl for Leicester , Beerschot and even kv Kortrijk could have helped develop players for Sheffield United and Cardiff , pretty soon kv Oostende could become the richest club in the world alongside Newcastle, future of Belgian pro League is looking pretty imo Only thing that sucks about our league is this stupid play-off system ...coming from a club Brugge supporter , usg deserved the title waaay more then us.... becoming the first club since fc kaiserslautern if i remember correctly to become champion in their first season back in top League...but no the play-offs had to be done 🙄😂😂

Aren't Belgian and Dutch clubs run very differently? From my outside and observation I feel like the Dutch clubs in general are very close to their local community, pretty conservative and doesn't sell out. They fill their squads with mainly domestic players and give inexperienced players many chances to prove themselves. While the Belgian clubs are much more likely to sell out to foreign capital, fill their squads with a lot of foreign players, take bigger risks in the transfer market and disregard new signings after their first mistake. Yet the clubs from these countries receive similar results and talent output. Fascinating. But I can understand why Dutch clubs are reluctant to plans of a joint league with the Belgian clubs. In my country Sweden the Eredivisie is seen as a fantastic stepping stone for talented players while the Pro League is seen as a career killer where an injury or manager change is enough for a player to no longer be treated as a human being. From the annual UEFA benchmarking reports "The European club footballing landscape" one can also note that the revenue mix for clubs in the two leagues differ somewhat, where Belgian clubs have a significant portion of subsidies/donations compared to the Eredivisie. So my conclusion is that the Eredivisie will be stable in the long run with its self-sustainability while the Belgian clubs are much more dependent on keeping hitting the jackpots in the transfer markets to keep external investors positive and keep investing.

your comment about the Belgian league is not entirely correct. You cannot compare the Dutch and Belgian leagues The Dutch league is more focused on attacks. The Belgian is much more physical and tactical. You say the pro league is a career killer. if you're not good enough you don't play it's that simple If you belong to the better players of the league you always make a good transfer like Oshimen,Koulibaly,David,Milinković-Savić,Mitrović, Perisic, Yaya Toure, De Bruyne,Ndidi, Courtois,Lukaku,Kompany they all played in Belgium If you don't count Ajax, there is much more talent from the Belgian league than from the Dutch league

@@kwintendebruyn3738 "If you don't count Ajax, there is much more talent from the Belgian league than from the Dutch league" Dunno about that mate. Yesterday a list of the youngest 20 teams in top20 competitions got released and in it 3 out of the 20 were Belgium teams where as from the Netherlands 7 clubs made the list. And obviously just because they have a young average age it doesnt mean they are all insanely talented. But Alkmaar's youth academy is probably the best right now from both countries which finally made international headlines as well easily winning the youth champions league beating the likes of Real,Barca,Sporting etc. In the netherlands you see much more Dutch players get developed from early age whereas Belgium seems to have more of a focus on foreign talent like a Beveren with a strong link to Ivorian talent.

This really looks like a Anderlecht show in this video, as a belgian myself i can tell you all that Anderlecht hasnt had this impact like they show in this video, the only reason why Anderlecht had so many players in the world cup is the friendship between Kompany and Martinez, and look what it brought us. Club Brugge had more impact on the league in the last 8 years then all other clubs combined, sadly this video doesnt show that at all. Foreigners only look at Anderlecht and they dont look at other clubs. KRC Genk is as an academy the best you can have in Belgium (De Bruyne, Praet, etc). I would highly suggest to mention the other facts aswell. Sorry but it is the truth.

Friendship with kompany was why there were more rsca players? LOL Kompany is gone and so is the trainer, let’s see how he did it: Bornauw, Debast, faes, saekemaekers, onana, mangala, lavia, lukaku, Lukebakio, Bakayoko are from rsca youth… in last interland. Dedoncker, denayer, Tielemans, januzaj, doku and Batshuayi weren’t there but played recently for the Red Devils too all also rsca youth and several will play again, like doku as he was injured and Tielemans idem. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but don’t claim rsca isn’t as important for the squad… Fc B had more impact on the league, yes, but not on the Red Devils or successful players elsewhere coming from them.

@@lennert48 lol, shows you re biased. We’ll see, but Debast will go to a bigger club and will keep on growing, he’s got a very bright future. And Baka too. Both still very young… 19 and 20. Players that have no spot in the team are players that have no spot in theirs, like Charles de ketelaere. Clearly not the level to go above the Belgian league. Also, mangala is soooo much better than vanaken, plays forward and has character, unlike vanaken. We’ll see, but after the first 2 games cdk showed he has no added value, just like in Milan. Mangala was very nice and his plays gave a goal. And Debast is clearly the future rock of the defense. If you’re to biased to see that, you’re an idiot. 19 and already a lot of experience and quality. Him and the keeper are the reason rsca went so far in the conference league and we’re the only ones on level. Bornauw has some way to go and denayer I agree.

Video was alright. It certainly is obvious from this vid that you haven't watched a game ever and you only talked about the 'bigger' teams like Anderlecht who's academy is nothing better than Cercle Bruges, Gent's or Genk's academy. Anderlecht placed 11th this season and fell off hard the last decade. Genk is easily a more important club these days for the national squad and natioan youth squads compared to Anderlecht looking at KDB, Courtois, Casteels, Carrasco, Castagne, Trossard and the U15 until U21 is full of Genk players but you choose to talk only about Anderlecht. Mertens played only a couple years in Anderlecht youth until U18 and was then found too tiny for them and got send away so Anderlecht should NEVER get credit for him. Belgian league is way harder to succeed in as a player compared to the Eredivisie. Rather had someone who actually followed the league even a bit make a video about it, because Wikipedia does not tell you the whole story as you can see.

Not saying Anderlecht is not one of the best youth academy and despite results one of the most decorated clubs in Belgium. Yet they've been doing woeful for some time now and I was frustrated by how hard he focused on Anderlecht because they have lots of players in the national squad while the video is about the league and not even our national squad. Cercle Brugge's youth academy for example isn't worse then Genk or Anderlecht theirs. This is what you get when you base your whole video on Wikipedia research

Youth clubs like Antwerp or OHL always had a very good name as well. I would definitely not say Anderlecht is that far off from most of these teams, look at Cercle and how much youngsters they fit into the 1st team and they have incredible statistics while no one would even think about them having a very solid youth academy but they absolutely do and that's also very important for our competition.

I like how you say “dominated especially by British”.While British have one 2wice since Bayerns 2012-13 treble winning. (Chelsea n Liverpool) This should be only n only given to Spain. Not Britain

How come Anderlecht gets so much attention, they only have the racist Lukaku who is any 'good' at the moment. Good at making penalty goals at least. Not a single mention about Genk, while they have the best academy at the moment. Best midfielder and best goalkeeper in the world are Genk products. De Bruyne and Courtois. Also not a single mention about Trossard? | Very biased and uninformed EFD!

Very bad take, coming from someone who probably doesn't know anything about the history and has never watched a JPL game in their lifetime.

I compare it to leagues of its standart like the portuguese. Less budget but more entertaining and competitif then belgish league wit an american system. Players from erdevise go there for a tryout lmao. They couldn‘t compete with 2nd Bundeslinga honestly. St Gilleois is an exception this year otherwise there is only Anderlecht (who are not the same since 2017). Only players that are know are KDB played 1 year at Genk, Lukaka played 1 year for Anderlecht and what next Trossard like no JPL is helll a trash

@@ynohj.uchia10 de bruyne playde 5 years in the belgium top league 2008>2012. lukaku played there for 3 years 2009>2011. They also had players like; koulibaly, jonatan david, victor osimhen, ... So they have one of the best developments in the world
