I'm new to making video essays, so this might not be the best structured, but I just wanted to make a video on what I feel are some things that make The Big Lebowski stand out above most other comedies as great.

The Big Lebowsky is a classic thanks to a very nice story but most of all thanks to a stellar cast. I have watched TBL at least 20 times. It’s just, for me, one of the best comedy films ever

I can watch this over and over, and always come out with a smile, one of the GOATs for sure!!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the humor being character based. On first viewing, an audience member is still getting a feel for how everyone normally behaves in this wacky world, so they may be less receptive to the little details and mannerisms that, on rewatch, they may find hilarious. This was the case for me with Walter, who I initially found overbearing, but over time I came to appreciate the insanity and self-righteousness he brings to any scene he's in.

Eh. Honestly, I’m with James Rolfe when he says that The Big Lebowski is the number one movie he doesn’t love as much as everyone else. I enjoy it to a certain degree, but I would’ve never watched it again if it wasn’t for all the festivals, books, and the religion all made from it. It’s been beaten into my brain and I’ve watched it so many times, alone and with people, but I just can’t figure it out.

I disagree with the way it's was carefully casted. Jeff Bridges is well casted but all the other actors John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro ect are great actors who the Cohen brothers have worked with before. They like working with the same actors.

My. Favorite. Movie. Period. But … the movie is most definitely NOT a comedy. It is a modern “film noir” played by bizarre and comedic characters. There is a difference.

yeah... It doesn't make me laugh. But it's sort of profound and cool in an easy way

The big lebowski is very entertaining, but I'm not sure I found it that 'funny'. It had lots of smiley moments, it had lots of those crazy david lynch moments, but thats not the same as comedy. Like MOST Coen brothers movies, its pretty hard to categorize. Like there is SOME political angle to it, thats why there's the whole beginning and setting about making it during the Gulf war. I still don't know what that means, or why they had that narrator guy who was mostly just boring and annoying.
I admit some scenes are funny but its completely overrated in my opinion. It got bad reviews when it came out then it gained popularity by college stoners who then started living like the dude because it suited their lifestyle. People then just forced themselves into liking it because other people did. People force themselves to watch it multiple times so the film grows on them so they can be in the cult of "i get it and you dont" and anyone who criticises the film just gets a "well that's just your opinion man. The big lebowski is just a film people have invested more time in because other people liked it. Overrated.

As someone who was born around when this movie came out I did not hear about it from anyone just decided to watch it one day, I think its a very certain type of humour some sort of absurdism that works very cleverly. Not for everyone and I guess not for you so perhaps thats why you think its overrated but for me it's one of the best I've seen then again my cup of tea is Monty Python, Airplane and those kind of movies so maybe it lends itself to a different era
@Beans3603 жыл бұрын
@@tamireshel4743 what's your opinions on other Cohen Brothers films. I like No Country For Old Men and Fargo but they're not comedies. It's weird how nobody cares about the Cohen Brothers other comedies except The Big Lewbowski.

I mean the film has an amazing critique and deconstruction of masculinity, expectations, anti war sentiments, and more. It has a lot going on that isn't just living like the dude
@Beans3603 жыл бұрын
@@Soupdude338 I honestly don't see it or get the hype. I don't see what's special about it and it annoys me because I feel like I'm missing out on some great thing. I wish I got it but I don't.
@Soupdude3383 жыл бұрын
@@Beans360 you don't see the critiques or you don't see them as that special? Those are different things. Ultimately, it's just a movie, some people like what it has to say others don't. That's fine, that's human. But that isn't the same as not realizing there are critiques and messages being sent

Take any college film course at random and I guarantee you would fail. The last English lit class i took not one younger person passed the final they couldn't comprehend the books the average American now a days is incredibly stupid (coming from an artist musician author and editor and publisher of over 75 books).
