Why The Celtics Should PAY Jaylen Brown, Not Trade Him

The predictable calls for a shakeup have been issued in Boston following the Celtics' latest postseason elimination. Jaylen Brown is drawing the most scrutiny considering he’s now eligible for the biggest contract in NBA history.
But believe it or not, Boston's best path to championship no. 18 is actually paying Brown and standing pat.

It doesn’t matter as much if the Celtics get a talent downgrade as long as whoever that might be has a skill set that isn’t as redundant with Tatum’s as Brown’s is. Those two just don’t mesh as well as other duos simply because they really don’t have complimentary styles. So if they get a player who isn’t as good as Brown but can play off of Tatum far better, it’s still an upgrade. People need to realize that it’s not all about talent, fit is also incredibly important.

And how would do be able to play off Tatum if he can't create his own shot or if his individual defense is suspect. Also how do you make up for the scoring void for Brown if he is traded or leaves?
@aricrudd6579
@aricrudd6579 Жыл бұрын
@@taiwooshodi1937 Brown doesn’t play off of Tatum, he really isn’t great at creating his own shot against even above average defense, and his team defense is mediocre. Also, do you think the points Brown scores just disappear if he leaves? No, it would create more opportunities for the rest of the team to score, so output would barely drop, and would probably go up if they got an actual point guard. The Tatum-Brown duo is, quite frankly, less than the sum of its parts.

@@aricrudd6579 , you're pretty much telling me you know nothing about basketball. Please tell me who plays well off a Tatum when their offensive scheme is to iso at the top of the key to break down the defense and once in the paint if the interior defense collapes to kick it out to the outside shooter doesn't work. The Celtics need to change their offensive scheme in order for Tatum and JB to play off each other well. If he wan't great at creating his own shot dude wouldn't be putting up nearly 27ppg, please put down the crack pipe. His team defense is above average. Why was Harden shooting below 38% when JB was his primary defender, if JB isn't above average, even Defensive Player of the Year Smart didn't have Harden shooting that poor. In the Heat series his was primarily guarding Gabe Vincen and Smart had Martin. So I don't know where you make your assertion. How would it create more of an opportunity for others to score when they don't have the prowess and are streaky at best. White Streaky, Brogden Streaky, and Smart is streaky. So when Brown missed almost 2 weeks with that facial fracture, what was Boston record? How come they were struggling to generate points? Um its not the less than the some of its parts as the winshares say differently. Maybe is the org changed their philosophy back to defense and actually had more offensice schemes to what I mentioned , they could actually have won.
@aricrudd6579
@aricrudd6579 Жыл бұрын
@@taiwooshodi1937 They’ve had multiple really good coaches, so blaming it on “offensive schemes” is a complete cop out. Brown still struggles to dribble and go left, which limits his ability to create shots. Team defense means when he’s defending OFF BALL, so why are you bringing up his primary defender metrics? And you say I don’t know ball? And yes, when a volume scorer leaves a team, multiple other players usually average more points because they get more touches. Tatum and Brown are just not complementary players, no matter how good they are individually, and Brown has serious limitations baked into his game. Don’t get bent out of shape just because you can’t handle facts.

i have watched an average of 70 reg. season games of the Celtics for Jaylen Brown's entire career and every playoff game. I have loved his development through the years to the point where he is an elite scorer. But he has not improved much in one worrisome area--he has the worst court awareness of any player I have seen in the NBA. He gets stripped from behind because he doesn't know where the defenders are, he loses his man off ball way too much despite being a very tough on-ball defender, he is a terrible passer, rarely hitting shooters in their shooting pocket and consistently misreading the defense and dribbling into double and triple teams. He has been in the league 7 years now and I don't think it will change. As much as I hesitate to say it, if the Celtics can get a younger player with potential and a high craft pick, they should pull the trigger. 27 is usually where NBA players hit a peak and JB may get a little better physically but the mental part of the game seems to be out of his grasp. A funny statement considering he is by all accounts very book smart.

Yeah, they should pay him but not that the value he is eligible for. Brown at his best is a no.2 or even a no.3 guy. With the new CBA, Celtics especially can't afford to overpay and expect to build a roster with as much good role players as they have. It's time to explore a sign and trade and build Tatum as the main star. The era of super teams is all but over.
@romeomonteverde
@romeomonteverde Жыл бұрын
I don't completely buy in with the offensive stats nowadays specifically about efficiency. You can't compare Kobe, Jordan, Bird, or anyone else's era. This notion of "most efficient in league history" or "most points in league history", league history this and that, it doesn't matter. Again, context matters. Wanna know they're so efficient? Less physicality and more wide open lanes thanks to the zone. It's become much more easier to space the floor, again easier, not easy, there's a difference. It's still gonna be difficult to score against other athletic players who are basically the top players in the world, but comparing it to eras with bad spacing, these NBA players would have it easier, especially the stars. I'm not discrediting them, what they are doing within this era of space is amazing, especially Jokic, but comparing or using it to compare it to other eras is not really valid

Well as you can see they made it to the ECF 2 years in a row and 4 times with Tatum and Brown so that’s not true if they get rid of Brown and don’t get equal value which you probably won’t get trading him most likely a young star who isn’t as good as brown and picks which you would have to wait for a couple of years to be where you’re at or better and by then JT would be 29 or 30? You aren’t winning with JT as the lone superstar if he couldn’t bring this team to a ring. Last year JT was 💩 in the finals and with that same trash left hand Brown performed well. They both turn the ball over a lot and have playmaking problems Brown more then Tatum but bigger problems we’re living and dying by the 3 and not having a scheme to bring the best out of your players instead of your players trying to fit a scheme. Defense wasn’t as good and execution was trash as well as stagnant basketball. You may flip some pieces a bit but if the team fixed those mistakes listed they probably win a chip and a 34 year old new head coach thrown into the fire isn’t easy to overcome also. It would be hard to replace the good things JB does bring if not he wouldn’t be 2nd team and despite a lot of disfunction winning 57 games and making a ECF isn’t a team you want to just tear it down after a few failures with your best players being 25&26.

@@bookabaka1074you missed the point. Paying 2 players a combine 110 million out of a 170 million dollar cap likely means the rest of the team will be garbage, unless you continue to pay smart Brogdan, white, Horford and Williams who are gonna need atleast 80 million just between them. So that’s 190 million for 8 players. Rosters generally have between 14 and 15 players, so who are, and how much are these 6 to 7 others suppose to be making or are you not factoring in the Celtics having a payroll well over $200 mill? Just watched Nuggets game 4, Aaron Gordon is solid and has the ability to penetrate, making all kinds of shots,rebounds, strong. His salary is also a bargain at this moment. Aaron for JB. JB stat looks great but in game 7 ,all disappeared, don't need that

Signing Brown is the smart move. If in the next 2 years they are still unable to win, then they can trade him. He will be in his prime, 28 years old and still under contract for 3 more years and should still fetch a pretty value.

Why would the Nuggets do that? That makes no sense, they don't need JBs regular season production, they sure as hell can't afford his post season production, and the CBA changes would mean they'd have no flexibility when it comes to roster building

He deserves to be traded. Yes his a talented player but his games is very inconsistent. Lacks focus and awareness during needed games to win. And last, prone to injuries.

JB does not deserve the super max. His heart and mind has too much nonsense and messed up his bball. Too much issues and ego..... starting to feel like a Kyrie Irving situation again.

If you would like to be competitive enough to lose in the playoffs by all means, regardless of his shot making his liabilities on defence have what inevitably hurt them.

Shows how weak the eastern conference are. These players are bootleg comapre to the players of the west. Imagine signing a poor man jimmy butlet for 300 million😂
