Healthcare In The States
When we learned something from most of our clients, it is certain that the healthcare system in the states is pretty messed up!
We spoke to many people regarding this topic. We even spoke to a client who is a doctor. He explained to us a lot of things and how much Americans are depending on health insurance. But the worst was surely to hear about the insanely high cost for healthcare with and without health insurance.
Prices
We have a lot of clients with chronic health issues like HIV and other autoimmune conditions. ALL of them found the medication they need in Medellin. The very same medication but the prices they paid here compared to the states are insanely less expensive!
Let me give you an example, the client having HIV was looking for a specific brand of medication and we found a pharmacy that provided exactly this medication. We went there with him and they had to order the medication, 45min later they called to tell us they got it.
I have to add, that they gave him the medication without a prescription or further questions. And now, the price.
In the states, he would pay around 2.000 USD for that medication of course WITH the health insurance. In Colombia, he paid, 200 USD!
I think that can give you an idea of what we mean by messed up. There are so many people coming to Medellin because they feel fooled by the US system for letting them pay such an amount of money when they can just take a 3h flight from Miami and get the very same medication for so much less.
Watch the full video to get more information about the topic.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey

My health insurance in the US was quite different. During my working life my employers included full medical insurance and when I reached the age where I qualified for the Social Security pension my $106 per month policy at Leon Medical Center in Miami included all doctors' visits, diagnostic tests, all surgery and hospital stays, complete dental, eye exams and glasses, and free delivery of all prescription free medications to my door. Many people do have an almost impossible burden in the US but thankfully I always had complete coverage. Now that I'm here in Medellin I no longer qualify for it but I still have Medicare in the US which pays 80% of any hospital bills, and there are direct flights to Miami in less than 4 hours. Still, I moved to Medellin because medical care here is excellent and my Social Security pension buys double what it would buy back home. I don't need a car and taxis are amazingly cheap. I have a couple of floor fans but my windows face north and I don't need any kind of heating or air conditioning. It's a no brainer for a would be expat who speaks Spanish or is willing to learn it.

WOW!! You got, "doctors' visits, diagnostic tests, all surgery and hospital stays, complete dental, eye exams and glasses, and free delivery of all prescription free medications to my door"...for $106 per month? In the US that is amazing. Prescription medication alone can easily far exceed that. Did you qualify under some special situation or were there other fees involved?

Thank you for making this video. It is very helpful. My father and brother are both doctors and I have studied the healthcare system we have in the U.S. extensively. I call it a criminal enterprise because that's what it is. Hidden prices and extortion like tactics that threaten people's lives makes it kind of a super mafia. We have a toxic combination of for profit hospitals, for profit insurers, for profit medical device manufacturers, pharma companies and medical school graduates who are often saddled with debt, but who often also believe that there is no limit to how much money they deserve to make after medical school. All of these players combined with a fantasy-like belief among many people working in the system that they bear no responsibility for how broken or bad it is - all of these forces combine to make healthcare insanely expensive in the U.S. while also denying coverage to millions of people. The American healthcare system owns the political system so we will probably never see it change through public policy unless we have a crisis or a non-political change, like people moving to Colombia or Canada - makes it change. Thanks again for a great video. I am planning to move ot Medellin for at least part of the year.

What you dont realise is that the major pharmaceutical companies invest so much in R&D as there is so much money to be made in the primary US market. Secondary markets, i.e Columbia, get the benefit of these drugs without any of the knowledge or risk.

This is a great video. I’m Canadian and our problem isn’t cost but rather the long wait time for care and I’m searching for alternatives outside even though we don’t pay for health care directly but through our high taxes. I’m also interest in leaving Canada someday and live somewhere else with less taxes and government regulations. Columbia is now on my radar. Thank you 🙏

If you want to know if your medication is approved in Colombia you can go to the INVIMA page, registros a un click. You will be presented with a page green and white. You have to put search by "principio activo" and then you enter the generic name of your medication in spanish and it tells you if it is approved, which companies sell the medication and what presentation it comes. Also you can type "Termómetro de precios, ministerio de salud y protección social Colombia" and there you could also look if the medication its approved and the price of the avarege dosis.

That's because because American money as much more value. 15 bucks may seem good to you but 70, 000 pesos is a shit load of money to a Colombian and none of them would call it affordable unless they are very affluent
@kellycelmira
@kellycelmira 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrcold8966 it's true that. But what the people in the US think is expensive compared to what they earn is different from what we think is expensive compared to what we earn. A middle class person in the USA can get bankrupt just trying to pay out of pocket for diabetes medication. A middle class person in Colombia would think is very expensive to pay out of pocket but will still be able to buy the medicine without fearing bankruptcy. And someone here who can not afford to pay out of pocket can still get it through the system, but sadly with the bureaucracy involved 😔

Do you know any type 1 diabetics where you live? I know this video is older, I still hope you will see my comment. We are going to look into the advice/service you provide to people who want to relocate to Colombia, since we have loads of questions about the whole process. Thank you for the video ! Interesting. You state that we do not have to as much in Colombia to live. I do not have a medical condition of any sort, but will still need to work in order to rent a place and purchase food. What are the possibilities for foreigners to earn money in Colombia, both from a legal point of view, and in terms of what such work would pay? I speak a number of languages, including Spanish, but have lost access to my savings (which I had kept in a Swiss bank!) due to Obama's FATCA law and the copycat restrictions all OECD countries issued in order to rob us of our savings.

Please try to avoid comparisons with the US system. There are so many factors in the patchwork quilt of paying for healthcare that it is impossible to say how much it costs for anyone individual. Government benefits, private health insurance personal expenditures, special benefit programs for people in specific situations, and many other contributors help to pay the outrageous cost. There is no comparing the US system to any other system in the world. Yes, it is that messed up. Just give us the information about the Colombian system and let us draw our own conclusions. Promoting it as "way less expensive" is deceptive. Yes, it is less expensive in Colombia but less expensive to one, is unaffordable to another.

USA healthcare is expensive. Too expensive. Too expensive for some bad reasons. Its also the best in the world. I say from experience- traveled to 40 + countries. I got a detached retina in Santa Marta. My Airbnb host ( mechanical engineer) said you cannot go to ophthalmologist in Santa Marta ( big city). They are incompetent and blinded my friend in one eye. I took a bus to bigger city (Barranquilla) and met with the city’s best ophthalmologist. Not impressed with his communication or skill set. Even worse equipment 20-30 years old. Equipment you would never see in an ophthalmologist office in USA. Next day flew back to USA and had surgery. Vastly different equipment and quality of doctors. There is a reason why Colombians go to USA for medical school. Americans do not go to Colombia for medical school. If you have a serious problem you are much better off in USA. I am not happy to say this. I hate USA healthcare costs. I have not lived in USA for years. You can’t offhand say move to Colombia and save 95% on similar healthcare. It’s simply not similar. I sincerely wish it was...

If you are young and heathy or even if you have some health problems but have good prescriptions form the US you can get here everything is good. However if you are older and need really good health care for a new condition situations can be difficult. My mother and father in law are Colombian but have US citizenship. They came back to Colombian because it is cheaper to live 10 years ago. They are 92 and 86. They were fine till they weren't. They have EPS Comfundi. Being Treated for them has been such a nightmare they went back to the US to get good medical care and they compare Colombian doctors to US like being in the stone ages. Also due right now to COVID going to Urgencia is a problem. Also why you don't mention is anyone over 65 can't get insurance even EPS easily. And if you try to get the prepaid insurance in Colombia if you have preexisting conditions such as Diabetes it won't be covered or you pay through the nose to be covered. You really need to talk to retirees who come here-because they will most likely want some insurance in the event of an emergency and they won't want to spend all their saving to prevent going to a bad hospital. We have EPS Sura and its suppose to be the best-but still I do see things sometimes when going to the doctor that concern me. Like EKG machines that look like they are from the 1950's.
