With China-U.S. tensions on the increase, the origin of the coronavirus is one issue driving a wedge between the two nations. A hearing on Capitol Hill this week explored the potential causes of the COVID-19 outbreak. Jamie Metzl, who attended the hearing, warned U.S. lawmakers to not dismiss the hypothesis that the virus leaked from a Chinese lab. He speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about the importance of examining this theory.

@@michelledavies2197 This story has long been proved false. No one at the lab got sick/died. There was a doctor who found patients dying who had visited the wet market, he was alerting the Chinese government and they buried the story because that wet market was supposed to be closed due to the first Sars 1 outbreak. Listen to virologists and how this story of the lab leak has been politicalized. Mix politics with science, you will always end up with politics.

I don't understand why so many people have refused to infer China's guilt from its refusal to allow the investigation to proceed! "ADVERSE INFERENCE" is a long-established principle of evidence law that we should apply to China. Under this principle, when a party in control of pertinent information withholds it (or destroys it or otherwise spoils it), the judge or jury may draw an adverse inference against the party. That is, the judge or jury may infer that the party withheld the information because it would've been terrible for that party's case. Given China's frenzied efforts to withhold, censor, and otherwise block access to the Wuhan lab, witnesses and physical evidence (going so far as to issue threats, offer bribes and "disappear" certain individuals within China), we should follow the common law principle of adverse inference. Thus, we should assume that covid came from a Wuhan lab leak -- unless and until China discloses all of the information that scientists need to determine how the pandemic started once and for all.

This channel uses the same goons those other outlets do and they all have the same conclusion. At its core, they're still trying to convince smarter Americans that this country still has diplomatic credibility in the world. That credibility is solely based on how much economic and military pain they can inflict. This outlet and its guests will still try to convince the rest of us that American power is still robust, just, and correct instead of what it is: a hostage taker. And it will use the pandemic it failed to protect its citizens (and the world) from as a wedge point. Blaming another country while using it as part of a checklist to convince Americans to participate in a lucrative conflict.

For me, the origin story of the recent Covid pandemic, is a lesson about the absence of competent global governance in the face of the increasing number of global community issues that escape national means to rationalize them. Of course, the use of nuclear materials and climate change are presently the most tangible examples of this governance failure, but global expansion of economic and human interaction and opportunity are constantly putting pressure on the scope of events that are outside the competence of national means to treat or resolve. It is not a mystery why reactionary political players use such issues as the pandemic as wedges to fracture a fragile postwar rules-based scheme to unite existing nations to cooperate in effective ways to prevent energy and intelligence sapping conflict. If the Chinese government deserve criticism on the Covid issue, it is for its efforts to stifle transparency; and many Chinese people agree on this point themselves. The way that the Chinese government dropped thier draconian Covid lock-down practices literally over night is a good indication that a powerful understanding of collective consensus and citizen consent is alive and well in postwar China.

Metzl makes a brief but very important statement claiming that the range status of the Horseshoe Bat precludes it from the Wuhan market, or from contact with it's suspected intermediary viral hosts, Palm Civets and/or Pangolins. A web search casts substantial doubt on this assertion. Also, complicating the question is his tacit assumption that animals sold in the Wuhan wet market are all of local origin. Note that the bat's range is used as a key point in circumstantial evidence refuting the natural origins hypothesis.

As an engineer that has conducted numerous Root Cause Analysis of significant technical incidents within oil refineries, it's my opinion is that we need to move from conjecture to real live FACTS. The way that a Root Cause Analysis is conducted is that we always start with a detailed timeline of all the relevant, verifiable, events. Then, we propose various hypotheses and determine what data we need to either prove or disprove the hypothesis. It’s a humbling process as I’ve watched many a good theory die a sad death, even when proposed by excellent, highly skilled people, in the face of real live data. I am immensely disappointed with Amanpour. This guy has history and law degrees and may know those areas well. But he is not qualified to be talking on this topic. I still feel there is value in this guest's perspective and sadly politics do play a part, especially with regard to why folks refused to be objective and follow the actual science in the first place. We were lied to on purpose. They knew more than they were willing to reveal to us.

Let’s get this straight, obsessing about lab solves no issue from fact that hundreds of thousands of farmers hunt bush meat for protein and collect bat dung as fertilizer. The spike protein is so unusual that it would never be a product of lab tweaking because it diverges from the body of corona viruses they work with.

Ask doctor Li-Meng Yan. She is one off the creators of Covid who worked in HK P3 Lab together in partnership with Wuhan P4 Lab and now she is in the US under FBI protection. CCP nefarious inhumane dictatorship in China was researching through Gain-Of-Fucntion research about coronavirus. PLA, which is not the army of China, but the militia of CCP dictatorship, created and patented internationally a virus that is technical identical to Covid. CCP dictatorship in China is at asymmetrical warfare against Japan and NATO. Only CCP dictatorship in China wumao trolls say the things you are saying because what you say is based on CCP lies to obfuscate and mislead. So please be careful to not repeat CCP misinformation and propaganda.

@@dolliscrawford280 the basic idea is the spike protein's structure shows none of the components and qualities that human labs would use in experimentation. While an individual may have been patient zero, the infection itself would come from Mother Nature.

Refusing to earnestly seek out the origin of a global pandemic (and thus learn valuable lessons) because Trump took an opinion on it would be a form of Trump derangement syndrome.

What, someone on A&C who isn't bashing Trump?!!! Friend - "What are you doing? Your narrative is supporting Donald Trump." What an immoral idiot! Metzel, "This tribalism of how we think, how we talk, has became really dangerous. We're in danger and our democracy is in danger." Bravo! Metzel for putting politics aside in favor of saving lives. A&C is soooo partisan I'm surprised to hear from anyone who isn't necessarily out to get Trump, who I might, I would never vote for.

What was the purpose of the experiments on this virus? Was it making it more dangerous? Weaponizing a virus? or the opposite? If we (the human race) are playing with viruses like this, it should be done in a secure site, far from populations, and have a remote destruct and lockdown system built in. Researchers should live on site, and coming and going should be heavily screened. Any person or objects leaving the site should be quarantined. All nations should have oversight.

I contracted Covid early on-It did not take a graduate degree in virology to sense it was lab created; common sense also told me it came from China and was lab created. Right here you have the lab that was working with the virus. But experientially as well, it did feel natural like anything close to what my body had ever had before. Very weird symptoms. Strange symptoms in my head…Post Covid effects of fatigue and visual impairments. Sleep problems. Anxiety. Unlike any kind of flu.

I have a few questions that I wish reporters would ask experts. I am not sure what is the origin of the virus, but what we know is that there are many mutations over the last couple of years. If you make the case of the lab leak, did the lab leak all of these mutations over the last two years? If you make the case that only the alpha was released and the rest mutated in vivo then why is the alpha version not a mutation of a zootic version? Since we probably never know the origin unless someone comes clean, I think we need to use occum’s razor and pick what virologists have been telling us for a long time: the more people move into the wild, the more we expose ourselves to new viruses.

There already are safety measures to prevent dangerous or deadly lab leaks, and I doubt the Wuhan lab was careless. Labs world wide have, for decades, been working with risky materials and vectors. Unfortunately, human error, unpredictable accidents, and unexpected biologic developments do occur. The ugly truth is that lab leaks happen on occasion, even in the U.S., and they always will. They're rare, and we can continue to improve safety and security, but any scientist will tell you it's ultimately an unavoidable part of research. With the astounding level of technology we've achieved and the level of research being conducted now, in addition to always pursuing improvements in safety, maybe we should be also pursuing a more rigorous approach to the ethics of research. The idea is anathema, I know. But it's either that or just accept that future disasters will occur.
