Why The DAB Radio In My Car Stopped Working.
The DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) Radio in my car which is now 9 years old suddenly stopped working. the car is a 2013 Jaguar XF model. One day for no apparent reason the DAB Radio access on the display disappeared entirely. then other electronic functions started to disappear.
This video shows where the DAB Module is situated in the 2013 Jaguar XF, exactly what the problem was and how it was fixed.

Just for the benefit of anybody reading the comments - that is not a CAN bus connector, it is a MOST fibre optic connector. A failing DAB or bluetooth module can cause intermittent resets on the entertainment system. Failing DAB modules can also result in not getting any stations. If you don't particularly want DAB you can get a bypass cable that loops the fibre connections. This will stop the module affecting any other parts of the system and only costs a few pounds. Second hand units are not massively dear but will often have the same gremlin, especially if taken from an older car.

Thanks Keith I have a 2014 sportsbrake and have the same problem water getting into the passenger side floor beacause my car is parked under a tree and the radio and phone functions now not working I am guessing I will have to do the same as you did what a poor design those vents are ,thanks for putting this video up it will save me a lot of searching .Have a Great Xmas and New Year

Interesting video, Keith. Made me learn that DAB stands for digital audio broadcast, never heard of it before. Good idea taking it to your local repair shop versus the dealership. In the US we have a big industry of used auto parts like that (recycling).

Leaks from the hvac inlet is quite a common problem you don't know about until it happens to you. I had a similar soggy passenger foot well in my mk1 Miata. I assumed it was leaking from aging seals but my friend told me to check the inlet area which I did and it looked clear. I managed to jam a vacuum cleaner hose down its throat and was amazed by how many dried leaves came out. I was also amazed by how much more air came out of the air vents.

that's what I thought - and no warning message on the dashboard either, even when the passenger side of the car was flooded to a depth of almost one inch - !

Almost exactly the same thing that killed my mk4 golf a good few years back but the entire brain of the car was in the footwell so mine would open windows after locking and all other weird things. Things are just not made the same as they were in the past. Big shame. Glad you got it all sorted Keith 👍

Keith, I've had this issue in several cars. My solution now has been to put a finer mesh plastic screen over the cowl openings. Anything small enough to go through the screen is now small enough to go through the drain without bunching up and plugging it. The heater/AC blower acts like a vacuum and sucks larger bits through that will clog the drain. I can tell when leaves and trash are building up on the screen, the heater/AC air flow starts slowing down.

A bit of a change from model engineering but a very useful warning. My old VW got flooded inside due to leaf debris clogging the drainage tubes. If you’re aware that this could be a problem, then a simple check and clearing can save you a lot of hassle.

My wife had exactly the same problem with her Abarth 595, which ended up with the whole floor awash. The cause was the same accumulation of dead leaves in the heater plenum chamber in front of the windscreen. My Porsche Panamera also collects leaves in this area but has not leaked so far. Luckily we have a big compressor and with an extending nozzle air blower, I can blow the leaf debris out. That reminds me it is time I did both cars again.

Well, I like steam models and I also have a Jaguar XF.. will keep an eye on that! I had a similar issue with my jaguar Xtype.. only it was the parking sensors module that drowned.

I had a old friend who would fix Electronics like your dab radio well he would try and not all of the time he would succeed if as you say water had got in then maybe the p.c.b would be corroded but the point l am saying is a lot of these parts can be fixed but the manufacturers don’t want you to repair it.lts a throw away Society a little different from your usual videos but enjoyable stay safe sir 👍

I've always liked the look of the Sportbrake / Est version. You don't see many on the road, although they made quite a few of them. Quite a practical vehicle, especially for what you'll probably carry in the back from time to time.

This is a common problem in a lot of modern cars the drains in bulkhead blocking due to leaves, modules on the floor of a car is bad engineering but I suppose space is a problem.

Handsome car. Had never heard of DAB radio until now, but I'm in the USA. We have "HD" radio stations. I suspect it's a different flavor of the same animal.

Regardless of the water ingress and damage, the "K" box will be for original DAB radio, whereas the "P" box will be DAB + which means that there are more stations available. I had to buy a new radio for my house when the DAB + came in and I could not receive Talk Radio for just one example.

Same thing happens with Rover 75s. The Plenum chamber drain holes get blocked and floods the electrics.

The car flooding from the vents by the windshield is a proud Jaguar tradition. My 1985 XJS had exactly the same problem. It also suffered blockage and flooding from the other drains. You can avoid this by running plastic string trimmer line down the drain lines from time to time to clear out the debris that tends to accumulate.

@@keithappleton I grew up in the country and always had old cars that I worked on all my life. I never had a car that I couldn't work on myself till my 1996 Dodge Ram 4X4 pickup. It's Mexican. It has been a good truck and has worked harder than it was ever supposed to. But the complaint I have about it was the computer failed. I decided not to replace it with another computer. I decided to reverse engineer the truck. I bought a distributor that has the upper side from a Chevrolet motor, and the lower part for a Dodge 360. This distributor needs only a power wire and I mounted a switch that has 2 sides, one for the LP gas sylinoid and the other for the ignition. The key still works to turn the starter. It fixed the main problem. But the alternator still doesn't excite and I have to charge the battery every few days.

Great video, the drain must have been plugged. Here in Canada I want to now what is the DAB radio module. Also how come you guys get the cool looking cars?

Yes it was a blocked drain pipe. DAB is Digital Audio Broadcast Module abbreviated.

No DAB per se in North America... we have HD Radio (AM and FM) which adds a digital channel slightly offset from the analog signal (though they call it "in-band on-channel) and also, as a paid option, Sirius XM satellite radio.

The optical connector might be a MOST bus connector. CAN bus usually use wires. Later they tried to use MOST bus, but after some years it was not favored and CAN-FD and Ethernet replaced is mostly.

Just to show that it always something. The drains can cause lots of issues along with the cabin air filters. If the car stays outside it can be prone to mice moving in and they will clog drains, vents, and chew wires. This and make a general mess of things. I hope that wrapping the DAB radio in plastic wrap will not cause an issue since there will be no ventilation. This might cause the DAB to overheat. If it does then you will know why and be able to resolve the issue. Thanks again and I always look forward to our videos.

Hi Keith, had the same problem with my jag xf . Sopping wet carpet on front passenger floor? Removed carpet it was like a pond the module covered in water??? No radio, no sat nav etc. took your advice and managed to get exactly same replacement part. Didn't solve the problem with the sat nav etc. (SAT NAV INITIALISING PLEASE WAIT) STILL NO RADIO???? in your opinion what do you think the problem could be?? On disconnecting the module i noticed there was only one red light lit on the end of the fibre optic connection would you think that was normal?? By the way your jag is absolutely A1 . Wonderful.

I am not sure with this, the units are very dependent on each other for connectivity. Sadly I think it's probably time for a trip to an auto electrician :-(

A little blast of compressed air through that drain tube periodically might obviate the problem. Nice car!

You can't get to the area easily without removing a lot of plastic grille parts . . .

@@keithappleton A pity. It is amazing how some "high end" vehicles seem to be less maintainable than their poor siblings. A man with your obvious capability now has the opportunity to build a super slick "Rube Goldberg" solution. 🙂

Isn't cleaning the drain tube part of the regular service? If not it should be along with the ac drain.

my dab module looks identical. Volvo have told me that the replacement I bought has anti theft protection which is why it still doesn't work. £85+VAT just to plug it in. did your need to be re-coded?

I feel like with all the sensors they insist on putting everywhere in modern cars they could have at least added one to sense the water. Feels like poor design overall, they probably expected you to just keep it in garage as a show piece lol :)

My Volvo XC60 radio went out. I bought a rechargeable portable JBL speaker and I pair it up with my IPhone. I program it to Pandora and have great uninterrupted music. Screw Volvo
