Hey! In this video I walk you through the ENSTROM 280. One of the original training helicopters that I believe still should be used today in flight schools. The un-governed rpm management system allows the pilot to really understand the correlation between collective movement and RPM change. Let me know your thoughts down below!

Thanks for the video. Good job. I love the Enstrom. I had a 280 and it's a solid good platform. Great, safe machine.

Great job showing the pitch links inside the mast 👍 This is the first time I ever seen a shot of those parts in any enstron video, I always wanted to see that. Again great job sir.

I've watched Kenny Keller (helicopter online ground school) talk about the Enstrom, and he loves that machine. Says they are extremely well build and very safe. Easy autorotations with a much higher inertia rotor system. The turbocharger gives them a little better high altitude performance. I'm interested to hear more of your impressions as you get more time in it.

I've flown the enstrom quite a bit and I love it. It is a very safe helicopter the only thing I'm not too fond of is the manual throttle in the one I fly but it keeps you on your toes lol

I started training in an Enstrom then due to school issues ended up taking my check ride in a 300. I have never flown a Robbie or a Cabri. The Enstrom felt like a real helicopter compared to the 300 which felt like an underpowered toy, and I hear the R22 is an even bigger step down. I am just a baby pilot but after being lucky enough to fly a 407 my point is that the weight of the Enstrom makes it so much more valuable in preparing for a larger turbine than the 300. Hydraulic controls (and air conditioning!) were a revelation in the Bell but the way it moved felt like an Enstrom, not like the 300 at all. And I think needing to keep an eye on your rpm on an Enstrom (the correlator makes it not as bad as you represent) makes you better prepared to monitor your power levels in a turbine - you are just more used to that being in the rotation of the things you look at.

Unlike the current Enstrom helicopter, the one you were flying was not turbo charged and I don’t think you had a Correlator either. While not as accurate as an engine governor, it will keep your RPMs within a manageable range requiring only small increases or decreases of the throttle. When I fly I hardly ever need to do any adjustments once I am in the straight and level flight. The wheels can be removed why do you must land on a cart or have some type of a ground handling dolly. The rotor system is extremely heavy but gives it great autorotation characteristics since it’s a high inertia rotor head.

Devin, I want to say thanks for all the reviews you've given us on the different helicopters you have flown. I know the R22's are notorious for chopping their asses off, but like any other heli, they all have limitations in the POH. I'm taking helicopter lessons in the R22 and have 10 hours flying, an will fly again this Sunday. The hardest part is learning to hover, n hover taxiing nice an easy. To me, it's like learning to play guitar. You have to practice n practice til you get the feel of it. When I first started, I was all over the place and came damn close to doing a dynamic roll over, twice! Needless to say, I was having too much fun! Lol! I do have a coupla questions for you Devin. Of all the small helicopters that you have flown, is there one in the bunch that was easier to hover? Or are they all just as twitchy and touchy to handle? And is there a big difference in handling between a semi-rigid and a fully articulated rotor? Thanks again, your experiences has helped me out alot. Stay safe my friend...🚁😎

Thank you so much Dan. That seriously means a lot! You are right on the path you need to be on. The Robinson is by far the most twitchy out of any I have flown and while I was learning to fly it I was questioning if I would be able to. It really is insanely difficult. But at some point it will click and you will wonder how you couldn't do it! Keep crushing it and working hard. Coming from the robinsons..... everything else is easy!

Notice from 14:21 to 15:10 how little the cyclic is moved during the entire pattern- you don't move it much. And athough I have been impressed with the governor in the R-22 I think learning in a non governed helicopter might teach you better power management and it is easy to transition to a governed helicopter, but not the other way around. I know of people that even learned in non governed piston helicopters and had hundreds of hours in them but had trouble going back to it after thousands of hours of governed turbine hekicopters.

I'll stick with the R22's for now, but the chopper I'd really like is the Safari, a smaller version of the Bell-47 with a 4 cyl Lycoming engine and R22 governor. Has a bit more fuel n load capacity, and waay more affordable than an R22...

Enstroms do not mast bump. That makes them far safer than ANY two bladed rotor system. They do have their foibles though. Skid struts are notorious for being difficult to tune and even so the darn thing will jump around as it gets light on the skids, but NO ground resonance accidents! Exhaust leaks at the manifold gasket will drive you nuts. I cut all the pipes and put in slip joints so I could mate the exhaust flanges with ZERO preload and that works great!

Why are you worried about mast bumping? This isn't Vietnam where you're flying nap of the Earth at 120 mph pitching over mountain tops.

I know you're friends, and you're both experienced, but you really shouldn't be just carrying on the conversation through final approach into the critical phases of flight. Sterile cockpit, focus your attention on flying the aircraft when bellow 500ft AGL, and certainly 300ft AGL. Data only shows that light helicopters are having more and more incidents globally, and you're not doing your bit to help change minds and promote safety. You have a platform here to do so, and a small following. Have you heard of the USHST? I'd check them out and see what you can do to assist them getting the messages out. (p.s. I'm not even American but I'm well aware of what they're trying to do)

@adamrichardson6918 It wasn't the Chinese owner that ran them into bankruptcy, it was that people in the US did not want to buy unless it was a US owned business.

A poor mastery of the English language, by a native speaker, may lead your viewers to discount your intelligence. Postproduction audio insert editing, time stamp 14:21 " As me and Josh fly around here...." is a glaring grammatical error. Use proper sentence structure.
