In this segment from Getting Warmer, Kal Penn explains why the US may have reached a tipping point in its transition to electric vehicles, and why it took so long. He also shows how your new EV could be an “Airbnb for utility companies.”
---
Getting Warmer is Bloomberg's exclusive new show about climate, clean energy and business, anchored by actor and former White House aide Kal Penn.
Accompany him on his journey as he takes an up-close look at bold climate solutions and discovers new facets of the global transition to clean energy.
In a hosted studio segment, Penn sifts through the overwhelming news about our climate and breaks down the facts and trends to understand with a dose of humor and optimism. Why are the recycling symbols on your plastic cups misleading? How does the carbon credit market work and does it actually help? And what is the future of water in a drought-ridden world?
On the road, Penn meets the innovators, researchers, communities and businesses pivoting to new energy sources and spearheading low-carbon technologies. In documentary segments, Penn speaks to the self-declared “crypto cowboys” of Texas who claim Bitcoin mining can help stabilize the state’s troubled electrical grid, and travels to Nevada to visit the company attempting to build America’s first closed-loop supply chain for electric vehicles. In New York, Penn explores the urban designs proposed to save the city from the next Superstorm Sandy and goes inside New York’s Empire State building to investigate the challenges of decarbonizing our cities and landmarks.
The show builds on, and includes contributions from, Bloomberg Green’s award-winning team of climate journalists as well as London-based climate storytellers Jack Harries and Alice Aedy. With a focus on the most pressing questions for young viewers, Jack and Alice unpack one big idea each episode. From recycled wastewater to regenerative agriculture and the challenges of a just transition for workers in the energy sector, they’ll break down how countries across the world are finding intriguing solutions to our climate crisis, and outline the challenges ahead.
Watch Getting Warmer starting February 1st at 8p EST streaming on Bloomberg channels on Connected TV Devices including Samsung TV+, LG Channels, and Fire TV. And on & Bloomberg.com.
You can also watch on Bloomberg TV (BTV) at 10p ET.

1:49 Europe is not one country. "Other countries" are not one country either. So, to bundle all the chargers in these countries and compare them to the US which is a single country is a bit disingenuous if you ask me. If we present the figures fairly, as they are, then the US actually has the second largest charging infrastructure after China.

Also some batteries don't even use lithium. Battery chemistry is very much in flux, there's even one that substitutes sodium for lithium. It always strikes me that some people are just grasping at straws to find *something* negative to say about EVs when they think they've found an Achilles heel with batteries. Not only is there a bigger initial cost to own an EV. Be advised that states are not just going to sit back and give up their gasoline tax revenue. EV owners will be forced to subsidize gasoline usage. From InsideEVs, Jun 07, 2023 Some states are requiring electric vehicle owners to pay extra registration fees as part of a move to recoup lost revenue on gas taxes. In one state, a new senate bill requiring added costs for EV registration is set to become effective on September 1, and 32 other states feature similar fees.

You don't mention practically zero lifetime maintenance for EVs c/w ICE cars and how much cheaper it is to charge vs. filling tank with gas. Gas prices can also fluctuate wildly depending on world events. Range is several hundred miles, how many road trips do you need to take? Otherwise you'll be charging at home when you get home from work and not stopping to buy gas. Hybrids are overly complicated half measures and still need gas, why bother with them?

Seriously is this a political ad? 1. EV battery chemical composition versus driving electrical vehicle - environmental damage might not offset the carbon emission reduction. Jury is out 2. The generation of electricity while getting greener … it is far from green so far. So the carbon offset is not totally mitigated. 3. If people really want to make an impact… seriously, look at the environmental catastrophes in South East Asian countries, Bangladesh, India, etc. Talk about low hanging fruit that will have a huge impact.

We also have to make it easy to make them where the issue is. Lithium production is nowhere near where we need and isn’t projected to keep up with demand. Peter Zeihan talks about this regularly.

Bullocks. Lithium prices crashed as recently as late 2020. Australia just surpassed China in lithium production. Like many commodities, prices can be volatile for a variety of reasons. We always need to be careful to extract resources responsibly, but there's no danger of running out of lithium.
@CaptainObvio

@@DemPilafian unfortunately it’s not bs… I’d love to work on EVs myself but battery production won’t keep up with demand because of lithium production. In 2021 global production was less than 110K tonnes (WEF data). We’ll need 3M tonnes by 2030 to hit it the ambitious targets we’d require to electrify the transportation system. Believe I want to be part of the solution but this is unfortunately media fluff.

Yes but with modern battery management systems, manufacturers are putting warranties upwards of 10 years on them. Also if you take care of your battery by getting into a habit of not charging to 100 percent and keeping it between 20 and 80 percent most of the time and around 40% when the car is gonna stand still for long periods, this lifetime can easily reach 20 years. Which is about on par with what ice cars manage before a major engine rebuild.

Electric vehicles are suitable for some people and some driving patterns. Pretending they will replace all gas and diesel cars soon is avoiding realities. Pretending EVs are non-polluting is avoiding facts. The waste is dumped into the ocean in some countries that produce batteries. Battery life is 10 to 15 years (not much longer than a typical car loan). Gas and diesel fuel cars have a much longer life. The grid losses around 60% to 70% of the energy produced at the source plant. And even if we outlaw all gas cars in 15 or 20 years, where do we get the money to buy new EVs? The deposal of all the gas cars would be an ecological and economic disaster. Touting these silly timelines and usage numbers hurts the cause.
