How do you suggest to measure collective wellbeing instead of GDP?
@phanirvana
@phanirvana 4 жыл бұрын
Probably as a quotient of GDP and HDI. The social systems are already working on a similar factor - Happiness Index. But whatever she says is interesting and thought provoking. I understood it as "responsible earning" and "responsible spending" in the backdrop of innovation, resource optimisation, and the market stabilisation.

. . . there must be a relation of the GDP and the distribution of it - the GDP as such is absolutely blind (as you could clearly hear) to the distribution of it between the richest and the poorest . . . I'm not a supporter of equality in every respect, but no one can tell me that he/she 'earnes' thousand times or even more times as much as their respective employees . . .

Inna, this not the perfect answer by any means, however, Carmen makes an excellent point that, in order for the concept of wellbeing to be seen as a social and economic 'positive' - as opposed to threatening the economic norm - we do need to express wellbeing in terms analogous to GDP; the Bain & Co. paper "Winning Companies Invest in Healthy Life Years', is a couple of years old now but it begins to acknowledge that the conventions Katherine speaks of are being questioned and more critically analysed which is at least a positive step although, yes, so much more must be done.

I agree on problems of current economy, however, I'm not sure that proposed ideas are better answers. We need to invest in science and tech, lower our input on environment, to recycle more, and what I can hear from that speech is: "you can be lazy", and frankly, right now we can't be lazy, however we definitely need more automation so people can work less, have more time for themselves, for their families, we need to lesser the differences between rich and poor

Also both projects are taking forever, people are waiting for them so they can create with them. Many people's work hinges on their success. What I am creating does not require blockchain and will not hinge on my success once the threshold of users is reached it can exist even if these fail. I am glad we have redundancy; multiple projects full of good people trying to do good. We all win if one succeeds.

I mean this is a good message and all but I found it difficult to understand how we'd continue the growth and circulation of the economy while using money to make things better. The problem I've always seen about saving the world from pollution is who's going, to, for example, pay us to clean our beaches and also how will it make money? This is why it's always been volunteer work. There are a number of solutions popping into my mind right now and I for one believe that if everyone gets enough money to live tons of people would be okay with just that amount and want to volunteer because they don't have to work a day job anymore. But the next big issue is cleaning the beach doesn't circulate the economy. We'll still need to make our country money by producing, selling, and consuming. I don't see a way around capitalism and the waste it causes we will always only be fighting back against it now. If enough people fight against it I'm sure we can do it but my concerns here feel like a big piece of the puzzle and I wish you'd have brought it up and discussed it even quickly.

@NeoQuaker1 do you remember when GM introduced robots into their factories? Yeah, I don’t, it wasn’t in the 2000s it was actually in the early 1990s. GM made a concerted effort to train all their line workers to operate their machines and to keep their jobs. Talk to any engineering student working with automation. 95% of them and their professors would say that robots won’t replace humans because we won’t let them. Humans can reason through issues in ways soooo much different than any robot we can design.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think you’ve listened carefully enough personally. But each to their own. You’re putting labels on something that would be more of a blend of systems, which has not been done before, in order to tone down the disparity of.classes, hence why democratic capital countries are looking to improve, not completely overturn, in order to lengthen the longevity of better living for people and the planet. Socialism, communism, capitalism, none of these do that. All current systems are one or the other. This is the mistake. The minute you label things that way, you limit them, through people’s preconceived concepts as well as many other ways. I find that obtuse, as leaves no room for any to be improved. But that’s just my opinion, based on what she’s actually said.

This is good for Earth sustainability, but not economic sustainability unfortunately. It's all good wanting to save the earth but I seriously wish this talk went into how she thinks we're going to sustain our economiy with a wellbeing economy, if we're working without also creating money. I can't seriously "hope" for intropy, it's literally impossible (for now anyway), our wellbeing will only go downhill from here; all we can do is slow it's decline. And we have to find the right balance which isn't discussed in this talk at all. :/
