I know Jack didn't mean to do this, but in his philosophizing on date windows and rage culture and enthusiast posturing (both real things to be sure), he neglected to mention the actual reason why many people don't like date windows. For some, it's just an honest-to-god preference for dial symmetry. That's it. Everyone's allowed their differing opinions and tastes, and we can all still be friends here.
@acastrue2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. He could have also mentioned how sloppy it looks when most manufacturers use a different font on the date than on the dial, or how annoying can be to set up the date and time for watch enthusiasts that have several watches and don’t like using winders. Just two examples of why people might not like date windows

I don’t like dates because I own more than one watch and it takes longer to set the time when I pick up a new one. In and of themself, I don’t mind them at all.

Dates are really useful! Just got a 16660 and love how that one sits - small enough and symmetrical as to where you might not even notice it’s there - but you need good eyes to see it

But... symmetry is boring :(

Jack is one of the few watch "influencers" that gets it though, watches with date just sell better. I see a bunch of "enthusiasts" scratching their heads thinking why should brands put dates on watches. They will sell at least 2~3 times more than non-date watches. Coming from a person worked at retail.

I want the date window. It’s not some crazy complication and it’s useful.
@paulouzman72672 жыл бұрын
If you don't like date windows, but still want a date function, the pointer date is an interesting alternative. Oris are probably most famous for this complication though other manufacturers have done it. If you want titanium, Citizen brought the first titanium watches to the market in the late 60s, so know their stuff and still have titanium watches in their ranges...

I'm not mad at date windows but I usually prefer dials without as they generally have a more pleasing esthetic to me. There are ways to display the date that are less disruptive to the design. It's not really a symmetry thing as I like a lot of asymmetric and unusual dial compositions, but I know it is for some. Please do longer videos, really like these!

The big thing about a date window in a watch is not whether it's good or bad it's where they tend to punt them messes up the symmetry of the watch. 6:00 or 12:00 date windows are the best for me

People with multiple watches don't like date windows because it's a hassle to set the date when you just want to pick up a different watch on the run.

My biggest problem with date windows is not the feature itself, but rather that many brands seem to treat them as an afterthought. Perhaps the most common example is using a different window color than the dial color. Another is using a font that doesn't match or compliment the style of the watch. I'd happily wear a watch with a well designed date window.
@varunu41762 жыл бұрын
I've had times where I left my watch home as my Datejust was left unworn for a few days and I had to change the date before leaving home. Date windows are not suitable for grab-and-go situations. It is a chore to have them all wound up and ready all the time so that you can wear whichever piece you like.

Tell you something really crazy; I hate date windows as they do ruin a dial for me, however, there are some date windows on certain watches that just do it for me and those date windows are usually well framed. Do you know why a well framed date window does it for me? Patek and Grand Seiko have popularized them! and made them look great
@JJJosh949 Жыл бұрын
While I wouldn’t call it hate, I generally dislike dates on watches due to the disruption in design. I think the only brand to have done it in a somewhat reasonable way is Omega (placing it at 6)

I love clean looking dials and am not a fan of date complications. That said, I amaze myself how often I look at my watch for the date. As a couple of other commentators have intimated, it's surely the minority who are irrationally against date windows per se. It's the execution of date windows that more often bugs people. That is often lazy and/or ill-fitting with the rest of the dial.

He is wrong about the problem with the date window. The problem is that a date window, contrary to a date pointer, is a "digital" display on an analog watch and that is, to say the least, inconsistent on an analog watch. That was for me the main reason to buy an Oris Radius Pointer. Unfortunately it turned out to be not waterproof, but that is another story.

My opinion is the hate for date windows is because they are so frequently poorly executed, especially from companies who have no excuse to poorly execute said date window. My personal issue moreso one of design, i rarely see date windows that don't interrupt the dial or mar the beauty of the watch.

There are date windows that are atrocious (such as the Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage-awful!), and there are date windows that enhance the watch.The old Hodinkee would have provided that answer (and they said just that in earlier articles). But those days seem to be over, today’s Hodinkee acts like a shill for the brands, reluctant to say anything even remotely critical about them. Sadly, that now results in calling enthusiasts with legitimate criticism, whiny idiots who dislike date windows to fill a psychological need to distinguish themselves, when the truth is that some watches just don’t do them all that well.
