Come with me as I paddle against the popular notion that automatics and OTFs aren’t great EDC tools. I may swim, I may sink. With me is the Microtech Combat Troodon.

I work at a cement manufacturing plant and carry a gen3 Combat Troodon daily. I use it to sharpen soapstone, scrape parts for inspection and of course open boxes. I blow out the mechanism as recommended, by Microtech, daily and oil weekly. I've never suffered a failure in 5 months, but time will tell.

Great video! It’s nice hearing something positive about double edge OTFs. I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while and only just now ordered one in the new Combat Troodon model. Looks like it was a good choice.
@these7seas6 ай бұрын
You got the Gen 3 CT? Those should be even better considering that the action is a lot easier to actuate!
@JHawthorne6 ай бұрын
@@these7seas it really is so much easier. They knocked this thing out of the park, even for Microtech standards.

I thought the same. I got mine a couple months ago with the DE which I never tried before. The double edge gives me two edges to get dull before it’s time to freshen edge. It fits easy in pocket and it’s fairly light. Enjoy yours.

It would be great edc if it was partially serrated. I only use the plain edge for when I got out on my motorcycle as I only need it for stabbing.

I am finding I still love my Medford’s and Chris Reeve’s but most of my new purchases are the various Microtech OTF’s - I have Ultratechs and Cyphers (the new ones) and plan on a few Hera’s and Combat Troodons - the new Gen models - OTF’s are becoming my favorites!

For a slim profile but functional meaning firm grip in hand OTF, which would you choose - Ultratech or UTX-85? Going to a show this Friday and can’t wait to try them all! Great review btw and thank you for sharing. Love the CT’s also. This will be my first knife in this hobby. Learning about all the others slowly.
@trippleoseven4 ай бұрын
I would do ultratech. Especially if you have a larger than average hand.
@honkerh8r5644 ай бұрын
UTX-85 is the same as the Ultratech, just 85% of the size. I would steer you toward any of their new gen 3 OTFs with the new "Dual Fuel" drive system. I've been EDC carrying those since the first of the year, and it's a big improvement in not only ease of operation (so much smoother), but also dependability. I have to make sure to keep my Ultratech clean or it will start to get sluggish and even fail to deploy all the way. The gen 3 knives I have fire hard every time. The Scarab, the Hera, the Combat Troodon, and the mini Hera all come in the "Dual Fuel" gen 3 action. I'd probably lean toward the Combat Troodon (Gen 3) as an all around EDC knife. The Hera is just really a CT with a facelift. The Scarab is probably king of the hill, but it's pretty chunky if that's an issue.

I have a bunch of combat troodons and I’ve carried them all the time for years. A bunch different blade shapes and they all work well. I’ve used them hard too and they hold up nicely. I have a Bowie that I’ve carried nearly every day over 2 years now and its just now is starting to need a sharpening. I don’t understand ppl that don’t like OTFs. I don’t think they know what they’re missing. I find them very practical and very usable.

Question: I have 2 Combat Troodons.1 is DLC coated & other plain steel blade. I want to use one as an EDC, & hopefully keep the other as an unblemished back up. And I’m wondering which knife collectors would prefer the DLC coated one or the non-coated blade? I’ll keep the one Collectors prefer as a “safe queen” unless something happens to the EDC one. Any help greatly appreciated🙏. Thanks and great review!
@these7seas Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Good question. I think the DLC is a more special one out of the two so I’d use the non coated one as your EDC and keep the one as a safe queen. Or even better, use both! Nothing looks better than a used/worn in DLC blade!

I have had two instances of someone telling me “that’s illegal” The next time I’m going to show them the serial number and say, it’s on the books and I wouldn’t be stupid enough to carry it if I didn’t know and follow the laws of the state we live in when it comes to anything that is considered a concealed weapon.

As far as double edge goes? Not too handy for normal use. D/A autos in general, are just about the MOST handy EDC knives out there. To be able to get it out of your pocket, opened, used, closed and back in your pocket one hand SAFELY without gymnastics is where the design shines. (Picture being on top of a ladder installing a new ceiling fan, and having to strip a wire and wrap it with electrical tape while holding the whole thing together, as an example)

We're talking about edc here. You edc 2 knives and 2 firearms everyday? 😅😅😅😅😅. One more time. They do not make good edcs nor are they good self defense weapons. They are NOT reliable. ANYONE that has carried one for years WILL tell you that they fail . It's just a matter of time. Good try though!

You ever try using it on a construction site? Drop it in a pile of sand or mud? It most certainly cannot do everything a folder can do.. ever spend time in the desert?
