You named two flaws that aren't even flaws. The dialogue is the best part of the show, NisioIsin is a wordsmith. The characters are focused on heavily throughout, often through the dialogue. Idk what you mean by them focusing on the background art being a flaw, having good animation doesn't take away from the characters at all.

dwarfplayer I disagree. There is no excess of anything that is unsuited for the medium of cinema. The point of art is to be able to express freely. If a director wants to focus on dialogue or adapt a work that focuses on dialogue he should be able to, because adding audio and moving visuals enhance the dialogue even further if done correctly, which in Monogatari it is. The dialogue doesn't detract from the visuals and vice versa. Heavy dialogue isn't limited to novels. Visuals aren't limited to cinema.

dwarfplayer Dude... I just don't agree with you at all. You can't put limitations on art. I had no problems following Tatami Galaxy, that was a wonderful adaptation of a wonderful book. The mile a minute dialogue is part of it's charm, it would have sucked if they dialed that back just cause they felt not everyone would be able to follow it. Tatami Galaxy is a niche work, not everyone is supposed to follow it or get it. It has to speak to you as a person. Even more so with Monogatari. Shaft's goal with the Monogatari series is to do their best to adapt a light novel as a light novel, not as an anime, to make you feel like you're "watching" a light novel. And they accomplished that. You act like they don't cut dialogue from the books, they do. They always have and they cut a lot, that's what is in the text flashes the majority of the time. Cut expository dialogue or inner thoughts. They do this because they don't view any dialogue as not needed, just less important. For a series based heavily on dialogue and character interaction I don't see how they could. Even the most mundane of conversations can add something to the story through subtext, implication, showing a character's mindset during the conversation etc. They know animation is different from books and they account for that. The huge speech at the end of Bake IS the climax. It's literally 24 minutes of people arguing about their problems and it's fucking intense, that's the beauty of it. It doesn't take away from anything, it is everything. It is everything the show is trying to be and it plays to all it's strengths. It's impeccably directed with the animation quality of feature films at the time. Watch that episode again and even if you don't like the story tell me you can't appreciate how much work went into making that. You complain how it doesn't focus on it's characters but ALL it does is focus on the characters. You say the focus is so hard on the animation over the characters but the majority of the time the backgrounds are static and minimalistic. They focus more on character movement and expression in their animation, which accompanies their dialogue and adds more to their character. What would you rather have happened that would have "improved" the climax? Less dialogue? Ya ok, you don't know NisioIsin and Monogatari isn't for you.

Ironically in Japanese there is no hard R sound as in "Araragi", but the sound is something in between L and R... Its perfectly acceptable in our overseas anime community I think, but technically we are all overpronouncing the R sound all the time when saying Japanese names and words.

If something in the later events is referring to something that happened in Kizu, or Bake, I can pick it up. And yeah, wordplay is an interesting subject. i love the interactions between Araragi and Senjougahara in The Mayoi Snail arc. One of my favorite arcs for the wordplay alone.

dwarfplayer Yes. But I believe that for myself, that it is hard for me to pick up what exactly is being symbolized. Like say, what religious symbolism is being played here. What Greek myth is being represented. I mean unless its obviously pointed out. What problems of society is being presented here. I am not fully aware of my surroundings. I don't know what's happening anywhere outside MY world. So when I hear "Ah I like the symbolism of this this and this." I get a huge "?!" Like "Did I completely miss something?" And I myself feel really left out. I feel dumb, stupid. I mean. I passed English, I graduated high school. I know what to do and whatnot to do. But when I get hit with this "?!" about symbolism, I just feel left out.

Huge fan of the series here as well as you can see from my nick (duh). My favourite arc is definitely Hitagi Crab, because everything just comes together so perfectly on so many levels. The apparition as a representation of a mental/ psychological problem (her weight loss hints at anorexia as a consequence of her family history), the double meaning of the crucial word "omoi" (can mean both "weight" and "feelings", she loses her weight because she suppresses her feelings, both figuratively through the doing of the crab god and literally through her anorexia), the similarity/ pun between kami/kani (god/crab, hence the god being a crab in the first place) - all of this makes for such a strong conceptual whole that I am still dumbfounded even after so many viewings. But yeah i got the meaning of the crab. I even went on forums about it and learned a lot. But yeah its cool. I like hearing what others say about their interpretations of the theories.

Exactly right. It's actually very important that the anime does this, not only because it is common in the light novels, but because watching is always a different experience than reading. The absurd is much easier to detect as absurd when it's literally narrated in the light novels, but the lines can blur a bit in the anime adaptation. The teasing banter with Mayoi and Araragi's complex-but-not-actually-creepy relationship with his sisters stand out as places that this blurring is more prominent in the anime.
