People complain that the 2018 Toyota Tundra is outdated, but I'm here to show you why it's still worth a look. I'll run through everything you want to know about the Tundra and compare it to the Silverado, f150, and the different trims like Limited, Platinum, and 1794. This particular model is the SR5 model and pretty bare bones, but with some upgrades..this thing can be modernized and beastly all in one. Stay till the end to see the test drive and realize just how powerful the tundra 5.7 V8 engine is. My biggest knock is the fuel economy, but with the reliability this powertrain has historically proven...who can complain that much.
Tundras will start at $31,120 but a 4x4 SR5 crewmax like this will be around $43k and up with options. Enjoy and leave your thoughts below!

Exactly and love my 2015 SR5 too. Pulling a 21' bay boat want a strong, good sounding v8 and bomb proof transmission. Forget all that twin turbo, 10 sp transmission blah, blah.

Correct, What's outdated? A truck is a truck. If I wanted to buy sexiness I would buy an Audi. Manufactures have started to lean toward luxury. If I wanted that I would buy an SUV. I have priced out F-150's and what they are asking for their trucks is insane! Here is what makes a good truck. Solid engine and a transmissions that doesn't blow up. Why are manufactures still screwing with reinventing engines with gimmicks? The rest is a body and a box to haul stuff. If you want to innovate just figure out how to store more gear, How to secure items, Hauling a full sheet of plywood without having to take the tailgate down. Hauling motorcycles, ATV's. Moving an entire bedroom furniture suite.

Keep in mind trucks are for working. You don't need electronics in every single vehicle. Shout out to Toyota for sticking to the route of the trucks🤘🏻

I had a 2007 Tundra and a 2012 Tundra that the company I work for chose to use for service trucks. Both Tundra's were unbelievably reliable. We kept them until they had over 200,000 miles before getting rid of them. The only repairs were tires, oil changes and brakes but the original brakes lasted to approximately 112,000 miles on both Tundra's. The amber running light in front burned out the sockets on both trucks but we're easy and inexpensive to replace. I love these trucks and can't wait until I can buy one and I'm a Ford guy.

I just traded my 15 ram for a 20 Tundra. I didn't trust the ram to go the distance. The ram did have it beat in some categories but so far I like the Tundra and agree with everything you describe about the truck. 2 Tundras hit the million mile mark. Reliability and not being in the shop all the time trumps the little wizzbang options

Love your video, I'm heading to a dealer this week to trade in my Tacoma 4X4 for a Tundra double cab with a 5.7. Dependability of Toyota is a big factor and worth more than MPG.

We are going to tow an RV, otherwise I would stay with my Tacoma. It is a 2012 and has never needed a repair other than a battery replacement.

Nice review. The SR5 upgrade package is pretty cheap and gives you bucket seats, tilt-tele wheel, console mounted shifter, a HUGE console and a 38 gallon fuel tank! I like the 2018 gauge cluster much better than my 2017. The TRD Off Road package on the SR5 adds good looking wheels, a lighter version of skid plates, better shocks and the all important decal on the bed side. The SR5 makes for a well equipped and affordable package. It took me 8 years to figure out what to get as a replacement for my 2000 Silverado 2500 and I don't regret getting the Tundra. (I kept the Chevy for real truck stuff though) It does a great job towing our travel trailer and I have gotten as good as 19.5 MPG on a trip when empty. Much better than any other truck I have owned.

my last truck was a 2001 tundra that still runs pretty strong but i sold to my bro..i bought a used 2016 CM TRD 5.7...i didnt come from having all the aids/gadgets/crap that can break so I dont miss them..i do have the blind spot monitoring and thats kind of useful i must admit...otherwise im very happy

My 2015 4.6 Tundra, which, was purchased new; I never buy used but that is just my preference. I am getting about 15 on city... Not sure what I am getting highway. But I am getting about 20 combine. I put about 30 miles per work day. I already have over 60k of ownership; very reliable and I am happy with it. But I don't have that loose steering situation that Mr. prime Autotainment has mention. For me, my truck is good and firm but it could be just me. Yeah, Running boards are a must. 2nd day of having it, I got running boards installed. But great truck...

First off Way to Go Texas :). Great video and nice review. I am driving 2004 Camry and over 200,000 miles still going, give me power when I need it but what can you expect from 2.4L. I test drove Tundra 2018 SR 4.6 L V8, while A/C running did not get the response as I should get with 4.6L. I think the same engine is in Lexus GX460 and it does not have power. I have not driven a 5.7 though. I have been fixated on Tundra but mileage keeps making me apprehensive to get it. I won't be using it for towing but for daily work commute. I test drove Ford-150 XL and upgraded XL 2.7L twin turbo, that thing flies and responds to you when you need it. American vehicles have tons of features, beauty with luxury, but every single person is telling me that Fords would start giving hard time after 36,000 miles. Tundra is a rugged n robust machine that won't stop. I was about to buy one, but I am waiting on 2019 with better features and better fuel economy. Already WTI crude (West Texas Intermediate) shot up to $71.26 and anticipation of regular gas in TX is around $3 a gallon. Again, I would love to test drive, 5.7L V8.

Thanks Mody! Very nice on the Camry, I drive one myself lol. Thanks for sharing that on the 4.6 , I figured it would be a let down in that way. I haven’t driven the 2.7 Turbo either but from different big car testers like motor trend/ car and driver it seems that 0-60 times of 2.7 and tundra 5.7 are pretty close. The 2.7 of course will have power earlier though. They definitely have a big MPG difference so daily commuting is surely something to consider with that. I have a buddy with a 3.5 Ecoboost running close to 200k miles. Also have an Uncle who bought a 3.5 A few years back and heard about problems so got rid of it for a V8 instead. Tough call! It would be nice to get some improvements soon that’s for sure. If I was you..go test one for fun and see if it meets expectations, but like you said, darn MPGs lol. You're very welcome Nolan. I have like a year or so developed the love of a truck. Being in TX if you do not buy a truck, I think you're really missing out on something. At the moment, unfortunately on the Houston roads, people have started being so much pushy in a way that they would drive their trucks, SUV, let alone same Camry size sedan right in your butt and want you to just swerve off you into a ditch or just pull-over let them get by, I am really getting sick of it, but I do not let these morons ruin my day. However, I have been saying the same thing that American trucks have much more features, tricks and some sort of technological advancement that would be targeted to the rugged hardworking people as well as guys like me who works in a corporate world. Ford F-150 twin turbo 2.7 absolutely amazing in speed and pickup, but these trucks do have their qualms and quirks. I do not thing there is a truck that would be a perfect one, there would always been missing something. People have started bringing up some sort of a patriotism over buying American and not imported, trust me, I do not wanna get on to that road, and of course the bandwagon affect is there. I have seen a video that one of the Tundras has done over a million mile which truly blew me outta the water. Since, this is going to be my first truck and I want to to be the one which I like, love and wanna keep for a pretty good long-time. My commute is almost 48 miles round-trip and definitely would love to go out on trips to other states with my wife. I am gonna hang on tight, what 2019 Tundra has to offer, and most likely would be able to put down more money towards my first truck. I hope 2019 Tundra would offer better fuel-economy this time. I have read about twin turbos on Ford F-150 gives out after certain thousand miles once again, these are all the stuff I read on the web and does not reflect anyone's research and opinion. I am going to be hanging on tight, wait, and see. Thanks a lot Nolan :).

I definitely get you with wanting a truck, it never leaves you once you own one. In high school I drove one and had one until I got outbid school...then sold it for something more efficient because I was commuting but dang I sure do miss it and really want another truck again. Definitely will someday. Sounds like the Houston drivers are similar to DFW drivers haha, crazy people I tell ya. I saw that million mike video too and loved it...also saw a video about a rancher using a Tundra in place of a true Heavy duty truck for 100k it so as a test and it handled it really well even though it’s not rated as heavy duty. I’m not sure what Toyota has planned for future Tundras but I could only imagine improvement with MPG. Thanks again for sharing that and watching, fellow Texan

Today I went to the Toyota dealership and it is a different one. The trucks I saw there were making me drool, however one of the salesman informed me that their Tundra's dept. is off today and would be back tomorrow on mother's day. Though, it was a bit flabbergasting that Tundra's dept. is off as I wanted to test drive a 5.7L V8. I took a day off from work this Monday, I am thinking to go to them either on Monday or directly from work and test drive one. This dealership is on i-45 and there are crazy drivers all the way to DFW lol on this highway. So many people are out with temp vehicle plates and I am not rushing out to buy one, as much as I want to, but a few factors are scaring me. Of course, having a truck means it would guzzle gas, ain't gonna be that efficient when it comes to mileage, however shooting up the gas prices are making me little wary for hold off until buying a truck. I'd probably be able to put down at least over $6,000 so I am assuming deal would be good and payments as well. Keeping my fingers crossed and impatiently trying to be patient lol :). Proud to be an Texan American :)

Lol well that’s fun that you at least went, but when you talk to the Tundra people maybe ask if you can take it for an extended test drive or something so you can get a good feel for it and drive it in a better area you’re comfortable with, that’s what I’d try. The only thing not to like about the Tundra is mpg. But, most full size shoppers aren’t as concerned with mileage, but it is on their radar.

I have a 2017 Crewmax Tundra with SR5 upgrades and 4.6L engine. I get about 12 mpg in the city and I drive about 250 miles a week. Definately a great strong truck, I test drove the 5.7 and of course you could feel and hear the difference but the 4 6 has a good sound and drives nice. The only cons I have it there is no storage under the rear passenger seats on any of the models, so if you want to put a sound system in or store a long barrel gun that makes it difficult. Technology is the truck could be updated a bit as well. Also would like the handle on the driver side, hope this helps!

I think the tundra is amazing truck. Built to last forever it relies on constantly improved outdated technology which kills its MPG. I am from Canada and current gas prices in my area are 1.27$/L which is on the cheaper end of our country. Now that is 5.08$/Gallon in USA prices and that is a deal breaker for me. I do hope the redesigned which will probably come in the next few years has some fuel efficiency technology to some degree.

Those gas prices are rough. That definitely makes a big difference over time. I’m with you and hope they make improvements to it, especially since the others are several MPGs better already. We can hope!

I'm roughly 6 feet tall and the shortest male member of my family. My sister is about 5'9" or 5"10". I know the CrewMax has lots of leg room, but how would you rate the double cab? I'm trying to decide between the two and leg room is one consideration. Most assuredly there will be times when several of us will be riding together. My mother got a Rav4 and one day my dad was stuck riding in the middle row and hated it because at over 6 feet tall he felt really cramped. At what height (minimum) would a person feel cramped sitting in the back of a double cab? I've seen videos of Tacoma reviews where people have said that if you are 5'10" and above its not the most comfortable ride in the back.

That’s tricky! Good question. I haven’t personally been in the back of the double cab but it has 8” less legroom compared to crewman. It has 2” more than Tacoma. I’m 5’9” and fit in the back of the Tacoma ok, but it’s not ideal. I think those 2 extra inches in the Tundra Double cab would make a big difference and it certainly depends on how far back those front seats are. Sorry I can’t help ya much with it!

the only reason I bought a Toyota Tundra with 4 miles 2017 not in 18 because of its superiority long lasting Workhorse impression that is always given I'm not going to bash them but boy oh boy there is a fruit and every cup has mine for 15 months with 26,000 miles on it now out of the 15 months it's been in the shop covered under warranty for repairs I total of 77 days nothing almost $18,000 it's crazy trust me I know every other Tundra I've seen them is pretty badass I've seen one or two that I've had similar problems but I would say it needs to be updated

I wish Jeep would refresh the drive train to get better MPG...said no jeep guy ever. Same here. Would i like better MPG? sure, but not at the sacrifice of reliability. Ford and Chevy race to the newest gadgetry , never getting anything right before they move on to the next 'best thing' thats why theyre always in the shop. this truck is tried an true and worth every penny. I mean damn, who needs trailer backup assist? you bought a truck! learn to back a damned trailer and save the 1k for that crap

Realibility is why you buy a Toyota truck. I have a 2014 that I absolutely beat the shit out of and it still runs good. Did not have to take it to a shop for anything except a sensor. This is after four years of using it for work and partying in it.

I don't see the point of updating something that's already this perfect, apart from the ford svt raptor 6.2LV8, I'd prefer this truck more than anything else in the full size truck market, most reliable and dependable truck and I like the low gas mileage it gets, shows that it's a truck and not some kind of priuse or corolla proper, proper truck. It's nothing but the best.

I currently own a 2016 Tundra SR5 DC with the 4.6 and previously owned a 2013 4Runner. The Tundra is slightly faster, but sounds much better. I wish the 4Runner was offered with the 4.6 and 6 speed auto.

That’s about how I imagined it. I do too, that’d be a good combo. Curious to see what they do with 4runners powertrain when it’s redesigned next. Considering Tacoma has 3.5, Highlander has 8 speed. Who knows

My dad traded his '11 4Runner last summer for a 4.6 Tundra. His mpg isn't much worse than his old 4Runner's. He is very happy with his truck.

Yeah there are a lot of things that haven’t changed much since its last redesign. I’ve read articles about Toyota engineers basically saying they intended to keep things more old school. Those MPGs though...kinda ridiculous. With the way that Ford innovates, I don’t see them slipping away from #1 sales anytime soon. It’ll be interesting to see just how much new technology and materials Toyota puts into the next generation Tundra. Well, thanks for your input and for watching!

Hopefully you have better luck in the future and if I was you I would try to see if the dealer or even Toyota corporate would “make it right” somehow since it seems like a lemon. I had one car (American brand) that was great for a few years...then it had some undiagnosed problems and needed to be towed a couple of times and was in the shop about 6 times the last year I had it before getting rid of it. Bought it new, babied it and only had 60k miles when finally ditched it

The only time that would happen is when the tundra has to stop for gas. It tows less and will not out sprint it...basically a wash 0-60. Even though it’s really impressive for a small engine, I’d still rather have a big V8 with worse fuel efficiency

when Americans gets the Tundra with 784.7 kg Payload the world gets the great Hilux with 1090 kg Payload or the best pickup Land Cruiser 79 Series with 3 Ton payload but I get it American are more interested in towing then payload

Jonathan Watts lol slow? It’s faster than Chevy 5.3 and Ram 5.7 and has a comparable acceleration power as the Nissan gasser and the Ford 5.0. For gas, check fuelly and the mix mpg numbers for the V8 are very pretty close. For the problematic ecoboost, it has lower mpg numbers than advertised just as most domestic brands. for being old, yes it’s old but proven and resale beats all the 3 very “technology savvy” trucks that stars having problems along the way. So much for the old sow thirsty. You need to do more research

Mr_ NutZ only reason resale is good is because so few are built and sold. Where as millions of better trucks are made. It's no where as good as a ford motor. Even the best trim package is still base line truck yo anybody else. Toyota only cares about taco sales.
