Everyone knows Range Rover P38's are a potential money pit, but should you buy one anyway? Theres no doubt there's a retro cool element but does that go far enough to warrant the running costs? We took this 2000 4.6 V8 Holland and Holland P38 for a run to see what we thought.

Get the banter and good video, but pretty unfair criticism. I daily drive one of these and it is a great car. Have done since 2004. Nearly all the complaints about the P38 come from previous owners not looking after them properly. The wandering is suspension needing care from wear, the beep is a safety feature as the owner has not set the window. The air suspension on these is not THAT unreliable. The 4.6 (Rover not BMW) does like head gaskets more than other cars and the plastics are not the best but they get universal abuse. And I dont have an R1, just a gixxer. :)

Sadly it's a Top Gear style 'take the piss out of an old Rover' job. They should try driving a good one, not a worn out one. At least they admit that it has bags of charm.

I completely agree, I own a h&h (always wanted one since they came out and finally got one) also a 2.5 autobiog and another 4.6 stage 3 tuned rpi engined vogue. All of these and my other land rovers have their nuances and require a hands on approach to maintenance so as to make them affordable to own. The rangies were very expensive when new the h&h was £64000 new in 2000 that was almost the price of a house albeit a small one, people who can't fix these themselves or afford to pay someone to maintain them properly are what has given them a poor reputation I can't get enough of land rovers as they are fit for purpose I use all of them for towing and off road work and I have only been recovered once due to an immobiliser issue everything else I've been able to sort at the roadside myself.

@@v8vince761 My one is chipped so it might be worse than standard, it basically averages 19 mpg all the time A roads, motorways, dual carriage ways, air con off, air con on, windows all open or all closed. That is mostly doing 60 and above and overtakes so not feathering it. I have never tried to but I guess you might see a little improvement. Possibly if you try on a long journey at 55 you might MIGHT get 24 / 25 . That is my experience with a 4.6 for 17 odd years.

I am in New York, and have Daily Driven my '99 4.6 for 20 years. Don't get me wrong; it has had its issues, but they were easily remedied. I love this car so much I could never sell it. It has such cache at this point; I am even starting to get looks from admirers on the road. I have the only one in the county at this point, I think. You are right about how it makes you feel though. I would buy that H& H in a minute too, we don't really get those over here.

My 2000 P38DSE have been my daily ride, the last 12 years. Its a pleasure to own and to drive. Its a robust build with good mechanical solutions. The electrical problems can be deleted instead of costly repairs. I would gladly buy a new P38 tomorrow. Let the boys have those newer cars.

Great film guys. I have a 2002 4.6 Vogue and love it to pieces in spite of (or because of?) the various slaps it has given me (ECU, air suspension pump, ABS sensors, annoying leaky roof rails etc.) Sometimes it's a service and MOT; sometimes a service, MOT, and two grand. But I don't think I've ever loved any car quite so much. What a terrific noise it makes. I should add I am extremely cool.

Great video guys, and very honest. I’m a Kiwi that lived in England in the 90’s and fell in love with the P38 and the way it makes you feel. I’ve just bought a 96 4.0 SE here in NZ and absolutely love it.

Hello, I purchased my 2001 4.6 P38a almost 5 years ago for $1700 USD, and I can agree you have to be off your rocker, not not as bad as people make it out to be. I have replaced Air springs, shocks, valve block, compressor, height sensors, spark plugs, wires, water pump, thermostat, ABS sensor, all 4 rotors and new pads, oh and the throttle heater plate gasket twice once and crank position sensor. But i have put 45k miles on it, it has never left me stranded I have taken it on several 2000 mile trips without issue.. It has been my daily driver I purchased it with 160k miles on it, all in over let's call it 5 years 9k "invested".. While no bargain it has been a fun car, it's easy-ish to work on, I have done all work myself.

Had one of the last 4.6 Vogues made. Absolutely loved it, never missed a beat, would pull 3.5t all day long without breaking a sweat. Use them like a land rover and hammer the shit out of them and they lap it up. Horrendous thirst though. Would have another if they still made them........there's more rust in my current L322 than most P38s which is annoying.

The engine is an evolution of the Rover V8, just the engine management system is from Bosch adapted from the 7 series. It has nothing to do with BMW or Ford. I daily drive one of these. They are expensive to run, have a lot of flaws but it's always a pleasure. Mine has over 400k on the clock. Man I laughed a lot hearing you even though I love the thing!

Therese how is the diesel at speed. Is it good around curves sering as its high How about comfort in the motorway. Is it good in rain I'm considering buying one as a project and it's a diesel Thanks

@@BonganiMagadu Good Day! The diesel usage is not bad, it depends on your specs and your rig. What will make a huge difference is if you are preparing your car specifically for the usage you are intending to do with it. When I was doing quite a bit of offroading with mine, I had bigger tyres. It was using considerably more diesel than now with my road tyres. If you are looking for fuel economy, I would recommend you to stay away from the gorgeous HSE/Vogue/Holland & Holland Leather Interior and go for the Fabric interior. You'll lighten up your P38 of 200 kg. The driving comfort is unparallel on the motorway. I would suggest to change all the door seals and tighten the doors to make sure that you are experiencing the P38 in its ideal set up, as when the vehicule ages, it often loses it's air tightness at the doors and give an annoying "wind sound" when driving at higher velocity. Overall it is a vehicule you will love or hate. With absolutely no in between. When purchasing a P38 you will need to go through a list of parts to change right away to guarantee its reliability. The vehicle is not expensive to repair and take care of, if you are happy to put in the work. Last but not least, if you are serious about commiting to a P38, I'd recommend to immediately buy your fluids and often-changed parts in bulk, making it so SO much cheaper than buying it per individual unit. We used to have one, Dad bought it as a workhorse. 4.6 with 270,000 km on the clock in 2010 so it had led a high-use life. The knackered air suspension and 19 inch updated wheels upset the ride quality. Half the electronics didn’t work and Dad sold it by the time it hit 280,000 km. The following owner complained weeks later we had sold him a dud. But I’ll never forget that as long as we had it, we felt like kings of the road.

The BMW 2.5 diesel engine is actually the one to have for the economy but bomb proof reliability and it's indirect injection so will run on veg oil. Yes you compromise of power but you don't buy a Range Rover for the race track do you?

I fitted a Powerbox to my 2.5DSE and it transformed the drivability. Now it's just slow, as opposed to incredibly slow!

Nice video to watch:)) you guys are right on many things, except the air suspension, spanners and mechanical issues(only had to change the water pump). I have a 2001 DSE model and i had to change a thing here and there, things i would change anyway with other second hand car. Because it's a diesel, is not expensive to run. Electrical problems may occur and they are temporary, but over the night, can do very well or they don't last long. Mostly of the things i had to fix were caused by improper care by the previous owner. I have it since 2018 and it's driven almost daily. Air suspension is reliable, i couldn't say more.

Buy a dedicated scanner and you won't have many issues other than maintenance. The eas isn't accessible with most scanners but buy a nanocom evolution and youll be good to go with any faults in the electrical systems

The air suspension will fail but coil suspension will too. The air suspension is relatively easy and inexpensive to fix these days, and should not be scrapped and changed for coils. The 'wallow' is largely down to worn out, 20 year old shock absorbers - they weren't like that when new. A good set of four gas dampers will fix this.

I had a 2000 4.6 HSE and to this day is still my favorite SUV of all time. Sold it in 2016 and although it was very expensive to keep, it was always rewarding to drive.

Bought a slightly ropey 97 4.6 for 700 quid, head gaskets done, new radiator, abs accumulator, ball joints, fuel lines, rear air bags, other little bits and some meaty A/T tyres. Owes me about 1400 quid and is about as capable as a friends discovery 2, only disadvantage is the 2 wheel T/C when used on greenlanes and pay and play which is what it is for. Bought it only for that but find any excuse to drive it as it is an addictive feeling to wallow around in it. The 10mpg can be an interesting one to stomach but my other fun car aint exactly much better admittedly. Actively looking for another in the next year that is 2000 onwards for 4 wheel T/C, 4.6 with lpg on it to use more regularly then eventually offroad. The suspension is not anywhere near as expensive as you think, the air bags cost less than springs do on my other cars and it is very well understood by the supportive community that's still going strong. It has been an excellent car to learn how to properly spanner myself for what is very little money, you just need to know which end of the spanner to hold and you can do most things.

No BMW V8 in this. It's Rover's own pushrod V8, enlarged to 4.6, which they bought from Buick in the 1960s.

Owned mine since new imported from Holland in 2000 (at 30% less than silly rip off UK prices). Superb car. Driving position and seat comfort better than newer versions IMO. It's still a special occasion to drive after all these years. Just use them and maintain them with respect and they will reward.

Just to put things in perspective. Had mine for 3 years (2018 - 2021) ... not my 1st (had 3) . Had to change the door latch mechanism (£200), an exhaust, cv joint and steering joint. Just done 250 miles in the hlls of the far north of Scotland hoofing it a lot of the way with a golf gtd and averaged 22mpg. beeping is window not being set, the steering may not be good but suggest the car does need the steering joints replaced.

I love my p38 and for now I daily it. Has a maxed out lift on springs now steering gave me trouble but replaced the gearbox and it’s much better. Getting a new steering damper soon great car. Better on gas than my 2005 Gmc Denali. Will forever love this suv.

Love the p38 , 4.6 . Be careful of the water pipe leaving the engine to the cab , rust on the bend on inside makes a small hole drips on hot engine , then put a switch on water pipe to keep cab cool as the cab heater is always on

Bought a 2002 p38 4.6 new. Only a plug lead failed and brake switch in that time. Still going well today.

They are quite expensive to run and do go wrong…like any old car. The oldest ones are now nearly 30 years old! I love mine and would correct a couple of points in the video - up to peak torque (2600rpm) the throttle response of the later Bosch/Thor cars is actually pretty good. Between 3000 and 4500 it does get breathless but it’s not helped by cam wear. Floor it and it will shift some more but the RV8 is definitely happier at lower revs. The difference between a good and bad one is huge. Most P38s drive so badly because all the suspension bushes are shot - but this is true of all the chassis Land Rovers, the bushes need to be sound otherwise you get wayward handling and death wobble through the steering.

Have had one(1997 HSE model with the dreaded Lucas System) for 15 years and love this motor car and maintain and repair as the fails happen. Others have bought and sold two or three vehicles in the time I have had this iconic vehicle and the comfort and capability level has still not been matched on and off road.....their best is still not good enough....421,230kms and yes its tired but pick the right line and gears and off we go.

this 100%. Had a yr 2000 4.0 for 3 yrs and loved it. Look after them and they aren't as bad as everyone says - people think because they are cheap they can be run for peanuts - they need the maintenance of an expensive luxury car. If you do stuff yourself it won't cost the earth - parts are reasonable and easy to find

The Queen had one and she loved it , I’ve had one now for a few years 97 plate 2.5 BMW engine and yes there’s a few jobs to do on it but for its age it’s to be expected but it makes me happy and would have another one

I’ve just been to the Alps and back in my 21 year old 4.0 and it didn’t miss a beat, albeit at 16.5mpg. Get a well maintained one and be prepared to spend money keeping it in order and you’re laughing. Great cars.

An interesting viewpoint, but in my humble opinion entirely wrong. The P38 is one of the best Land Rovers ever made. The electrics are less complicated than those that followed; the chassis do not rot away like on the D1's, D2's and the old tried & trusted V8 will plod on forever if you do all the basic maintenance. You can't have a Champagne car on Lemonade money. If you don't like the MPG, why buy a 4.6L car? Both of my P38's have been tremendous and many of us with them would not part with them for the current models that have far more bells & whistles and far more to go wrong. 😀

P38 4.6 on bulk LPG best comfortable long distance towing work horse You can find for BANGERNOMICS budget motoring 🤠 I have owned & driven G wagons, landcrusser, shoeguns & Navaras but when towing hard they all = money pits !!! Owned 4 l322 s ,4.4 V8 LPG , 3.6 TDV8 & 4.4 TDV8 🤦= rot box , money pits which are a nightmare to work on. Keep going back to a well sorted robust rot free P38 Best BANGERNOMICS workhorse by miles , all the quirky electrics are easy fix when you tune into them, You can work on any part of a P38 yourself AND it was made in Britain 🇬🇧👍

The GEMS cars were phased out in 1999. Plenty of 1999s with the THOR spec. In true Land Rover style the facelift was staggered rather than being done in one go. The 4.6 was nothing to do with BMW, it's a bored out and stroked old Rover v8. Air suspension is fine if maintained and provided you change it promptly, you avoid the issues and find it's not that expensive either. Your radius arm bushes need doing which is a significant proportion of your issues.

We've had one years - maintain it properly without scrimping and it's fine. Neglect maintenance at your peril, it will bite and it will cost a bloody fortune.

The liners slip because the block was over modified from 3.5l upto a 4.6l. Originally a Buick engine not a bmw lump. Weve owned the diesel version for 5yrs. The repairs needed for a 20yr old car are not much different to any other car. Just being a 4x4 means there is more gear to replace.

The 2001 and 2000 version in blue with crean interior vougue version are really nice cars to drive unfortunately they are almost guaranteed to go wrong and the problem with these cars is that once one thing goes wrong another will go wrong especially the electronics the air suspension the roofing bit on the back the and the cd and satnav system if that goes wrong its a bastard to get it working again properly but while it is working i think these are beautiful cars comfortable and look amazing :)

Errr.. only the engine in the diesel is from BMW, the 4.0 and 4.6 are rover engines. The Range Rover has something that can't be matched, partly due to it's history, but mainly the fact that it exudes class. They aren't always perfect, but that's part of the charm.

This is my first car it’s a 1999 and I only paid two grand for it and it has had a coil over swap. hasn’t done me bad so far. And it’s very fun to drive.

They are great and they can be very frustrating, you cannot beat the sound of the engine while you are driving. I must be mad then!! Seems like a typical lets knock P38's and as you said its getting in age thses will still be on the road when X5's will be in scrapyards Funny video though

I've had my 4L P38 for nearly ten years and 2.5 Diesel before that, until it got wiped out by a numpty in a pig truck and the thing has never cost me more that £200 to get it through its MOT and more often than not just the cost of the MOT. Only Jeepy weepy types decry the P38 because they're used to a shambles of a car.

These vehicles are massively misunderstood.. Obviously compared to a modern luxury car the ride would not be as good. But when these were new, they were probably the best riding off road vehicle out there. What you fail to demonstrate or mention in your video is that these are incredibly capable off roaders, thanks to the live axle suspension front and rear, very capable traction control, and off course the air suspension. In capable hands these cars will shame most new, and very expensive off road vehicles. Also worth mentioning, a good example, that has been taken care off properly still rides better than most cars, and have no reliability issues. These cars are now 25-30 years old, not many Toyotas or any other brand of car around that old that does not have reliability issues..

X5 - There are many cars I really like, but the problems they have, put me off .... and I really wanted to like the X5, but the issues and literal horror stories, is enough to sour my experience with them, and put the final nail in the coffin for the BMW brand as a whole for me! Every BMW i've been in was lit up like a Christmas tree with faults, service warnings, and other problems, right back to my Landlord's E30 M30 … which on many occasions, I help bumped start with him, so he could get to work. If "Reliability" and "German Engineering" … being a point of pride, are bywords for quality, I've yet to see it in BMW. Name me an M-car from the E30 M3 & E34 M5 that hasn't had anything but catastrophic engine issues. And lest we forget that brilliant piece of German engineering, the SMG gearbox (cough). This is the sad result, when fanboyism or fan person ... ism, overpowers true, well documented facts!

You wouldn't close a door by latching it then shoving the middle SO WHY CLOSE THE BONNET LIKE THAT? A bonnet is to be closed by releasing from 10", it's in the owners manual.

The 4 and 4.6 litre are Rover engines through and through (well, ex-Buick...), nothing to do with BMW

Exactly. Many people think that because it was built in the time of BMW, the engine is also BMW in gasoline versions and it is false. They are the latest official Range Rover engines. And I think it is a model with false criticism. I compare it to owning a Citroen from the 80s (it needs a revision and maintenance according to the type of vehicle). I have a RR classic, 3.9 VOGUE 1990. I only check fluids and transmissions, but it is because it is much simpler than a P38. If I get a P38 4.6, I know I have to do more maintenance than my Classic. It is pure logic.

I still drive my 2002 P38. 22 yrs later and last year was the worst ..overall, I love the drive but really no reliable from one shop visit to the next. It’s in the shop every 3 months or so… but still cheaper than a new car or a leased one…

Actually P38 is the last truly offroad-worthy Range Rover. Not without some mods of course. But next model (322) became a mall crawler. So, P38 nowadays is a decent cheap platform to build a very capable offroad rig.

Hi guys You seem to be driving it like you would for Miss Daisy ! They only wake up above 3000rpm ! I have two p38's (one for spare bits !) As for your idea of Off Road !, wtf ? Come to Australia and we can show you some more challenging tracks ! I actually prefer my 1981 two door RR ! (It only has 3 fuzes !)

@@jamesmx7 my p38 was awful for rust 😂 someone must have parked it in the sea. Lasted 5 months with constant problems. Bought the l322 the other week and it’s reliability is incredible. I do prefer the p38 tho 😂😂

The problem is your comparing the way an old car drives to a modern vehicle, but those of a certain vintage will remember how car's/4x4 used to handle. The X5 a flawed design, they were designed steal away a portion of Range Rover's market share and as such it's a direct competitor....but the X5 doesn't work off road and is put simply a jacked up 5 series tourer....I should know as I own one and to be honest it just doesn't feel special enough...The Range Rover does.

In the 4.0 & 4.6L V8 versions the liners could in rare cases drop which would have been an engine out rebuild to fix. This was combatted by people installing what’s known as “top hat liners”. The top hats were an expensive enough procedure but guaranteed that the liners wouldn’t slip again in the future. Having built a 4.6 myself I have to say the liners were perfect on it when I pulled the engine apart so it is a rare thing to happen.

@@tompage yes but the liners only slip is the block cracks, the block cracks on thewater jacket due to bad casting i the factory, this then allows coolant behind the liner and eventually can loosen the liner; allowing it to slide up and down with the piston, it will only do this when cold as the metal hasn’t expanded yet. Top hat liners are a cure for liners slipping but as liners slipping will pretty much always point to a cracked block there fairly pointless, Coolant will still track it’s way up and blow around the top of liner thus looking like head gasket Failure. This happens when these engines over heat, bad maintenance is the leading cause of this, blocked rads old thermostats and leaking coolant hoses are normally to blame

I have a 2000 p38 4.6 bought back in 2004. I have replaced alternator, head gasket due to timing cover gasket leaks, water pump, abs pressure sensor, radio was eating battery power so I brought a used one, chaned headliner fabric as it was falling apart, air suspension air bags replaced oem with Arnot Industries Gen III lifetime warranty, rebuilt air suspension valve block, driver door handle broke and latch was acting up so bought a used one as new one costs $400, repaired upper radiator expansion tube that broke off at the top of the radiator, heater core leaks replaced O rings but still leaks so plan is to buy audi heater core Nissens 70230 and use that as replacement. Went through multiple batteries, brake pads, rotors, and tires, currently odometer reads 120k and I have no plans to get rid of it. I think its a unique rover. Unreliable as things just falls apart even just plastics breaks somehow.

two people without homework trying to make a video. first the sound from the doors was the memory was not set , second the engine 4.0 or 4,6 is not bmw is a buick V8 from the states ,and the reason is unreliable because people without knowledge like u two trying to fix it .

Perfect Video Cheers mates. Haha 5:30 the Sound is " say good bye 1000 Euro to fix it" and after 4 weeks again. And then you think now is the p38 perfect but Not.... and again 2000 Euro. Most highest total cost of ownership maybe the p38.
