Have you judged people who are poor for making what seem like poor decisions? Why It Matters host Joshua Lim speaks to two mothers each raising a family on a single income to understand how poverty can be expensive and stressful.
Geraldine Tan, a psychologist from The Therapy Room, discusses why the ‘scarcity mindset’ - where one's attention is used up on the immediate, which makes it harder to think long term - is hard to break out of when one is poor.

Poor people having way too many kids is also the end product of the scarcity mindset. Chronic stress alters their way of thinking. They can't think straight and keep making poor decision, like having kids they can't afford to have :'(

This is what happens to my mom. Everytime my allowance from scholarship comes. She spends it all in a day, her reason is that she wants to experience luxurious food too. She's tired of being poor. I keep saying to her since she's never had a job ever since my dad died, to just wait until I graduate and get a job. She also didn't want me to study because it is not necessary. But I wanted to rebel against her so I finished even tho I tried taking my own life several times because of bullying. All my older brothers advice me not to give her money but I keep feeling empathy and giving in and she does it all over again. When I do get to control my money and be very meticulous in what I buy for forcefully and bills, she says I'm selfish and I always count money. I was always selfish with money because I didn't get to have my own. Everytime I get Christmas money, I have to give it to my mom to pay bills. I only took ged for elementary and highschool so I am not smart. I know understand her because of the videos. Thank you :)

This video is really true. I work in medical sales for life-support machines, and one thing worse than being poor, is being poor AND sick. When the family sole breadwinner suddenly fallen sick, bed-ridden, or not fit for work anymore, it is a very heartbreaking moment for the family. There is even one case where the husband abandoned and divorced his sick wife and left their daughter with her. She cant even work as she depends on oxygen therapy 24 hours.

That's why education is important. Education, while not perfect, gives people with offsprings a child to break this cycle. It gives everyone while might not be equal opportunity, but gives poor people a better opportunity to break the poverty cycle

Yea but it’s hard for them to break through poverty because most poor people have a mindset that they have no hope to break through this cycle and that they would end up working part time to provide for their family during secondary school. Thus they might neglect their studies and continue this cycle due to a Low income job

Education is important! And you will become another loyal slump of meat slave machine for the kind giver where your education is being received (The Government). Everyday. 24/7. With your lovely comrade in faith. And lovely little puppies following your footsteps - do not know where to go? Follow the big man who follows the bigger man (The Government). Else, you will get charge/s and lead a miserable life. Then, you have no choice to follow or end yourself (if you are brave enough). There is no such thing as a dream here. It's only perfect protected slavery. No talents. Just slavery. Simple.

Most banks don't want to lend credit to those who most likely can't pay it back. In fact it's probably illegal, since credit card interest and fees can become so high that poor people are likely to be bankrupt eventually. Banks can't become mafia and beat the crap out of you for that debt, or at least not publicly. If banks want to give, they would do it at a charity event or through a charity fund.

It's impressive to see the high level of analysis that goes into these videos. Poverty mindset is a very real issue and is a hidden barrier to escaping poor conditions. Another way of saying it is that poor people tend to get stuck in the permanent present. The demands of daily living overtake a person's emotional and cognitive capacity and there is very little chance to be able to get a clear view of the future and how it might be possible to make that future look different. In order to take a longer view of our life we need a period of calm where we don't need to think about daily survival. But how can poor people take a decent amount of time out of their lives to think deeply about the future when food needs to be on the table that night? Poverty alleviation programmes need to take a broader view and factor in the psychological aspects of poverty.

I can't believe how so many people can be judgemental about the poor having 5 kids. We do not know how they got there. Could it be they had the 5 kids when their situation were able to provide for the kids? Or maybe they were exploited by someone else? It doesn't take much for many people to fall into poverty. For a diploma holder, the average paycheck is 1.8k minus cpf, you are likely to take home 1.5k. Provided the spouse doesn't divorce you or does not die of whatever causes, a single parent with a diploma is likely to be in poverty even with a good full time job.

Poor is a mindset. People complain about wages. Yo it's a competition, make do with what you got, move ahead and you get respected by your fellow. That's what life is about better yourself. I see the poor are too caught up with money. When you work, what are you selling? A skill. Learn skills. They're worth money. Don't work for money, as money is a byproduct of skill.

Every society need to have a mix of low, middle and high income people to function properly. If everyone is able to get proper education, no one would want to take up the low paying/dead-end jobs like cleaner, plumber, electrician, cashier, waitress, driver, delivery etc. In that case, what should we do? Import more foreign workers?

there are 2 types of poor people: one belongs to the unfortunate (e.g. they were ok at first but met with some unfortunate incidence such as serious accidents, illness, etc; then they can no longer earn a decent living). the second type belongs to people with poor genes, they do not know how to think long term; they multiply themselves senseless and recklessly, become parents at very young age. they have very limited earning power. so as time goes by, their family size increases, they become more and more poor. These second group will never recover or get better. How to help them if they don't help themselves?

Single mom 5 kids , last week I read a news article about a widowed father who is a security guard having 12 kids. In the other CNA video there is a family of 8 kids causing the elder sister having to go to work young just to support the family. There is certain part of Singapore with certain believe, keep having tons of kids . These people rarely have the time to educate or provide for their children turning into vicious cycle. I really hope the G curb the number of child these group have, down to a certain level. If not the society have to feed them instead, from tax payer money . It's not fair both for the child and the tax payer to support the parent wants if the parent could not afford it in the first place.

I came from a poor family with 5 brothers. Poor people should not have kids at all . Its selfish and delusional. My dad hides behind his glory story of working 24 /7 in order to provide but all the while he was working our family was falling apart in his absence. He shouldn't have had so many kids at one time, that's his failure. He thought because the bible said he should have children that he should leave us to philosophize and romanticize his failures and absence. Now that his children turned 18 he can cash out his inadequacies by saying " well you're adults now you deal with it" . Smh poor religious people are ruining their own families. As long as I'm poor I wont have children. I wont repeat his mistakes and the mistakes of most poor religious people. Dont breed more stupidity and mythology.

The right type of education - financial literacy - will make a big difference. Many who earn big money are broke before the end of the month. On the other hand, there are teachers who became millionaires or attained financial freedom through spending wisely. "Poverty is like everything else. In the end it becomes bearable. One continues to exist in a wretched sort of way that is just sufficient to sustain it." Victor Hugo, 'Les Miserables'.

I'm a fifth kid, and I find some of these comments insensitive. The sole breadwinner of my family, my dad, refused job promotions because it will lead to stress and health problems. If he didn't do that, our family won't survive. My mum was not allowed to work cuz of my dad. She takes care of the household and funds. I was going to be handed to my auntie, but my dad refused in the end. Why? Love and trust. It's that simple. We do not need a rich life, we just want to be better and do well in our dealings with others. He earns 1200 a month. Now my siblings are teachers and I'm going uni. We are more financially educated now. Some decisions are still questionable. But anyway, just remember that we can't judge others so easily.

I've watch this video and I don't get what's the point of the video. Where are all the so called poor decision this video claims? All I see is two mothers trying to keep their kids alive, budgeting their living expense carefully. Where are the fathers? Why aren't they helping to pay bills and bring money home to keep the family afloat? These mothers ending up in this situation isn't within their control, or is this video suggesting these mothers become gold diggers and sleep their way until they find a rich husband before having kids? Who wouldn't want a better paying job? Who's going to look after the kids, cook them breakfast, lunch and dinner and take them to school if the mother is away working in a job? What's a rich decision? Falling for these "loyalty cards" shopping programs, or spending $45.95 instead of $26.25 is "smart" or "rich decision"? Saving $3 but end up spending $45.95 is called "smart" when they don't even use all those nappies/toilet paper? LMAO! These marketing tactics are what shops used to get you to spend more and more at their shop. I don't know who's making the poor decision here. When you have a surplus of money, you tend to not think about how much you spend and end up splashing money around carelessly. Feel like a new iPhone X? Sure no problem, I earn $X dollars a month, I'll splash some money and treat myself to a new iPhone X. So I repeat, I don't understand what this video is raving on about. Sounds more like it's trying to throw some big scientific word then forcefully made a failed video around that concept. This video is so full of shit. For all those people bragging about getting an "education", do your schools teach you about life and financial lessons? Don't your school just teach you maths, science, english, environment and perhaps about human body in health education? I live in Australia and we sure as hell don't have teachers telling us life lessons or how to manage our money.

With CPF drawn they are less stressed and not so likely to make wrong decisions. But sadly now a days the CPF is locked up so tight that its near impossible to draw out hence people get stressed and make bad decisions.
