IT'S HISTORY

Жыл бұрын

The Queens-Midtown Tunnel was first planned in 1921, though the plans for the tunnel were modified over the following years. By the 1930s, the tunnel was being proposed as the Triborough Tunnel, connecting Queens and Brooklyn with Manhattan's east and west sides. Find out when was the Queens Midtown Tunnel built? How was the Queens Midtown Tunnel built? Why does the Queens Midtown Tunnel have doors? Does the Midtown Tunnel flood?

Since he doesn't mention them, the doors are there as a response to the tunnels being flooded during hurricane sandy. They are meant as flood gates that can handle storm surges four feet higher than sandys for when the next superstorm hits.

The superstorm event is extremely rare for NYC. The doors could also serve to convert the tunnels into a temporary emergency shelter. They look beefy enough to do that.

For those of you wondering about the giant doors, the city installed those on the tunnel's entrance after hurricane Sandy in order to keep it from flooding during the next hurricane. They have yet to be tested under actual hurricane conditions.

Another comment said they were installed following Sandy. They can prevent storm surges that can be up to 4 feet higher than Sandy's were. But no, I'm 99% sure there was a disconnect between whoever records, whoever edits and whoever uploads.

It is a shame that connectivity between the midtown tunnel and lincoln tunnel was not done. Aside from the cross-bronx expressway to the GWB, all other Queens / Brooklyn routes to NJ involve crossing on city streets.

Much like the tunnels in Norfolk/Portsmouth Virginia where one completely filled up due to a malfunction with the storms doors which didn't drop when asked politely by some pixies I'm pretty sure that's what someone forgot his video was supposed to be about. You could say his train of thought left through the nearest available open door. The storm was hurricane Isabel and it definitely sucked.

Are they still charging the toll in both directions? That would be outrageous to pay $20 for a round trip plus the Hudson River crossing toll. When they had the tollbooths, they charged both ways. It is not clear, but then again this guy never explained the doors so clarity and completeness are not his strong points.
