The Rings of Power was quite possibly the worst fantasy series i've seen in my life. And my main problem with it is the fact that it doesn't even resemble the source material. In this video, we'll dive into why The Rings of Power was such a dissapointment.

This was one of the cases where i thought that "re-imagining of" should be corrected with more accurate term "plagiarized from". purchasing rights to a name should NOT give rights to slap said name on any random shait

The bad visual effects and obvious poor scripting in the promo shorts were sufficient to convince me to not even start watching this show.

I'm glad they had rights issues and couldn't massacre the actual stories. Expect someone with appreciation for Tolkien to ignore ROP and tell the real stories in ten-twenty years time.

I don't understand how they could spend a billion basing their "story" on 150 pages of Appendices. Since LOTR and The Hobbit had already been adapted, all they could do was perhaps a 2-hour film using the Appendices, and present it as a prequel (although we have had enough of those lately, and the adaptation of the Hobbit was already a prequel, not the book). I don't see any hope for another 4 seasons, unless of course the Tolkien estate change their mind and sell the rights to the Silmarillion. And even then, goodness knows what that adaptation would be like. Good video, thanks.

This is the key problem with ROP. There just isn't enough material to warrant even one season's worth of material, let alone five. They were forced to invent a lot but what they invented was tonally incompatible with Tolkien. Specifically, ROP leaned heavily of the modern Mystery Box trope. Who is Sauron? What is the meaning of the symbol found on Finrod? Who is meteor man? How can we keep the elves from fading? What is the key/sword thing? Who is Adar? What are the orcs up to? What is Pharzon plotting? Etc. ROP asked these questions and then spent most of the show slowly opening each of these Mystery Boxes. Trouble is, Tolkien never wrote his stories this way. Neither LOTR nor The Hobbit use this kind of storytelling as a center piece. In LOTR we discover very early on that Bilbo's ring is the One Ring and the rest of the story is about what happens because of that. In The Hobbit, deciphering the map is done on the way to The Lonely Mtn. during a rest stop. Figuring it out is not central to the plot, the dragon and the gold are.

In the grand scheme of things it's less the 150 pages. If you to the appendices of those 150 pages about 6 to 10 are devoted to the second age. You have backstory on Numenor and a timeline of events. And that is really about it.

There was plenty of content in the appendices to write a series around. Amazon just blew it. The SA alone had a number of key events that could have made for some interesting stories for a series, not the least of which would have been the establishment of the kingdom of Numenor and Elros as king (imagine all the intrigue that might have arisen with a half-elven king), Moria, Sauron's machinations during that early period (perhaps to lay some seeds for Numenor's destruction), Glorfindel's return, relationships between elves and dwarves in Eregion and on and on - but nope. They were more interested in creating a girl boss along with diversity-hire elves and dwarves and hobbits than a decent series. And don't get me started on all the great material from the TA.

I have first read Silmarillion 30 years ago (admittedly in Polish translation), and I don't think this is the main issue here. Sure, not being able to use the story of Galadrierl and her valiant crossing of Helcaraxe (which is a feat worthy of the bravest warrior) was a problem, but one of the biggest companies in the world could and should have money for a good story. I have read mangas with much much more production value (Frieren comes to mind), with great emotional value, gripping story, touching off themes that appeared in the first written human piece (mortality the centerpiece of the Epic of Gilgamesh). Still, they gave us this. They are intellectually and creatively bankrupt people. Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC, everything modern Hollywood touches is garbage. Just look at the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. Star Wars was an especially egregious case, as they've announced officially that they didn't have any source material to work with, while they retconned all the books and comics from Expanded Universe out of existence. I have read Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It was excellent. It is better that they didn't get the rights for Silmarillion.

Project much? There's no evidence that Tolkien was some sort of anti-feminist. It's a fictional world from thousands of years ago. Why must it conform to your first-world mid 20th century ideals of societies where women and minorities are shoved to the background?

Then theu choose not to fallow lore at all just using the names like galadrial and so on..From ignoring Evrey thing that made elfs elfs dwarfs dwarfs. Then you have the woke politics Evrey thing about it was doomed to fail months before. And the tv show is probably already dead. And No I am not watching season 2 i rather watch rewives on the Internet about the show because it's more entertaining. Not even if amazon payed me money would i watch the garbage of a show that has nothing to do with the second age.

@@anni.68 So, I guess it's dangerous to start these things over the internet, but I can mention a few points at least. Galadriel never searched for Sauron, nor did her brother ever die to Sauron. And the show makes it seem like the creation of the Rings was GALADRIEL'S idea... Need I say much more? At the end of the season, Galadriel convinces Celembrimbor and Elrond to make three rings for balance, and they need Mithril, apparently, even though Tolkien never wrote this to be what gave the rings their magic. There are more, but i feel like this shouldn't get too long XD.

@@anni.68 Galadriel and Celeborn travelled first to Lindon, where they ruled over a group of Elves, and were themselves ruled by Gil-galad. According to Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn, they then removed to the shores of Lake Nenuial (Evendim) and were accounted the Lord and Lady of all the Elves of Eriador. Later, they moved eastward and established the realm of Eregion (Hollin). They made contact with a Nandorin settlement in the valley of the River Anduin, which became Lothlórien. At some point, Celeborn and Galadriel left Eregion and settled in Lothlórien. According to some of Tolkien's accounts, they became rulers of Lothlórien for a time during the Second Age; but in all accounts they returned to Lórien to take up its rule after Amroth was lost in the middle of the Third Age. This is a very silly, confused argument. The Silmarillion does not tell the stories of the main characters of the Second Age except for the brief Numenor story set forth in the Akallabeth and a few following pages. The show was always based on the Appendices, and if you read Appendix B, you see that all of the main events listed in the brief summary are or will be in the show, along with other material from Tolkien's letters and unpublished work (for example, Galadriel being "of Amazon disposition" in her younger days as well as her suspicion that Sauron was again becoming active). Given the very small amount of available source material, the writers needed to flesh out the story by making additions for dramatic effect. This is why the show is an adaptation. The 38% RT thing meant nothing (professional reviewers = 85%), as this merely reflected the review bombing that occurred after the announcement of a multiracial cast. If you check ROP's Amazon Prime page now, you see that of more than 32,000 confirmed subscribers, 54% rate the series five stars out of five, and it was the most-watched Amazon Prime television show in 2022. If you personally didn't like it, fine, but saying that it was "bad" because it didn't follow The Silmarillion is a cheap shot.

Its not about being woke, its about disrespect to the Tolkien estate, the showrunners might as well be urinating and defecating on Tolkiens grave. the bad writing and dialogue is my mai criticism, but flinging the canon out the window was lazy and unintelligent.

The only thing I’ll say is just because a show has casted minority races in rolls doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad. And just because no one was mentioned to be of a different race in the story doesn’t really justify the hate that people get for playing a character who people think is white.

@gunkulator1

There's an unspoken assumption when people read Western literature that all characters are going to be white unless explicitly stated to be otherwise, in which case they are always pointed out to be some sort of rare exception, usually someone from a far off exotic land. If the character is a hero or on adventure, the assumption is further narrowed to assuming white males as the default. There's no reason these biases need to carry over to today, nor do they need to apply to a non-Western earth setting like Tolkien's. Tolkien's stories are universal. Superficialities like gender and skin tone never entered into his storytelling as key narrative points. The only people this matters to are people who still cling to the old biases.

Letter 163 "'Middle-earth', by the way, is not a name of a never-never land without relation to the world we live in (like the Mercury of Eddison). And though I have not attempted to relate the shape of the mountains and land-masses to what geologists may say or surmise about the nearer past, imaginatively this 'history' is supposed to take place in a period of the actual Old World of this planet." Tolkien did that he could possibly find, and memorized every piece of literature about that world (if you've ever seen the youtuber nerd of the rings, hes basically that in real life). He said even though he would have gone a different direction at some points he did thoroughly enjoyed it, considering that time the author didn't actually specify much of what happened. So as much as people bash it, i feel like unless they are that dude, or have as much love for it to know the full characters and are at least wiling to delve more into the world, there wouldn't be a way really to give it a proper assessment. Especially considering there is so much more people barely read about or even know.

Even without using Tolkien's works on it, how can you explain the ff: cringe to bad dialogues, no sense of geography, nonsensical battle plans, volcano erupting cause water poured into it (with!), guyladriel surviving volcanic eruption head on after getting hit straight in the face by pyroclastic flows, celebrimbor and elrond arriving on foot to moria (no need for horses and escorts). If you are willing to overlook these things I mentioned and so may others that I didn't mention yet, then your critical thinking, appreciation to the genuine works of Tolkien and standard of entertainment as a whole is so low and is a big joke.
