In May, Putin visited China in the hopes of reaching an agreement to build the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline. This would connect Russian gas fields to hungry Chinese consumers, giving the Kremlin a long-term economic lifeline. However, no deal came to pass. This video examines the underlying reason why it likely happened and why it spells further problems for Russia.

They used to be enemies. The Sino-Soviet split existed from 1960s until 1990s. Each wanted to be the most prevalent Communist nation during the Cold War. Nixon's visit to China in 1970s was an attempt to keep them from reconciling for political power.

Because of the Ukraine war China’s expansionist policy vis a vis the South China Sea, the Philippine islands and Taiwan were brought into sharp focus making it close to unachievable all made worse by exposure of the Belt and Road program as a way for china to gain influence is exceptionally painful for china. If you've ever done business with Russians, it would make a lot of sense that they're walking away from a deal that they could actually handle but don't want to, they believe in leverage. This is much more than your typical bargaining styles between partners, especially partners of unequal power. The thing is I've done business with both Russians and Chinese, and I can see how this rift would have happened even if they had accurate information of each other and the right analysis of said information. Especially Xi and Putin, Xi believes in stability but also wolf diplomacy. Think of it of a predatory form of bargaining, meanwhile the Russians, especially those in the Kremlin, believe in a much more brutal form of street power. Between those things, and the fact that China really doesn't need Russia, it would like it, but it doesn't need it, and the Russians still have this Mussolini thought pattern of their imperial might, past and delusionally present, I can see how this became a problem. Essentially the Chinese are predatory, and the Russians are parasitic, and they do it by means of leverage, as such this was bound to happen at some point, and it doesn't really surprise me with this specific issue of natural gas, where Russia seriously has nowhere to go. All I can say is that I'm happy that they have managed to be their worst with each other as well as the rest of the world

The RF lacks the spare technical capacity or capability to build the pipeline on its own. The PRC can potentially provide that, but it needs to heavily interface with western firms and technology to do so. The PRC lacks developed supermajors. Thus, the delay is likely as much to do with the PRC attempting to save face and not admit inability to the RF as it is about squeezing the RF for concessions. After all, its a well known face saving tactic that if you can't keep up your end of the deal you look to force the other side to abandon the deal.

@@goenzoy712I have to agree that this is pretty complicated, China has already seen that Russia can’t be trusted to abide by their contracts for energy. While China is already in economic trouble of their own with a real estate collapse that they’re already pouring billions into a rescue plan. But what also must be taken into account is the growth in renewable energy? In another decade it could replace most fossil fuels so why waste billions on a pipeline that could take just as long to build and bring online? China is already a world leader in renewable energy, Xi probably sees a day that he doesn’t really need Putin as his BFF???

Since building the pipeline takes years, it is interesting to see how the two countries see their economic situation in the future. I guess both countries see their situation better in 2030. This will change nothing. Just as India demands cheaper hydrocarbons from Russia so does China. Russia does the same thing to India and Iran when the circumstances are in its favour. The Iranians are twisting Moscow arms to gain access to military tech for all those drones and missiles. North Korea in exchange for satellites, space rockets, and missile tech provided ammunition and other military hardware they have. These are not alliances but transactional quid quo pro. Unlike the Western Europe lead by the United States that requires Canada and Western half of Europe to give up their interests for the US interests.

William China is in serious economic trouble from sub standard mega projects , housing bubble, industrial overcapacity, decreased exports, severe unemployment, capital flight , an astonishing increasing national deficit , unrestricted quantitative easing (printing money) , wolf warrior diplomacy, BRI loans etc etc etc China may not afford it at the moment China’s manufacturing is not gas hungry like German or other European countries as well. Crude oil is more attractive to china than piped gas Australian coal to generate electricity & manufacture steel would probably be more vauable to China than Russian natural gas.

Elvira Nabiullina has a very difficult job. I've always thought she was the only competent person in Putin's administration. She's very good at her job, and her efforts to hold up the Russian economy so far have sort of worked. But I think she is going to hit a brick wall called "national circumstances" in a matter of months, or years. There really isn't a way Russia's economy can sustain the war expenses even with a pipeline to China, unless China's banks actually bail them out, which they will never do due to sanctions fears. They are spending over $100b USD, 1/3 of their budget, on war. You need a lot of income to support that in any case, and their whole economy is resource based. But their resource exports have shrunk, not grown, and while the money is still flowing that's mainly due to the current oil prices. My friend used to live in Chita in Siberia. The way she described it, it doesn't really have a real economy. It's all informal, little jobs. And that's a city of 300k. I imagine it is similar elsewhere. How can that type of economy survive massive war expenditures? The Z-niks keep invoking the Great Patriotic War, but Stalin at least had huge factories pumping out things. Russia is deindustrialised, resource dependent, impoverished in many areas...

Here's my guess on the source of the problem, this is speculation. Pipeline technology is an area where the west is way ahead of both Russia and China. It is possible that each party is hoping that the other can handle the actual building of the pipeline and technological hurdles involved, in reality neither party really is confident in their capacity to actual do it. They both have incentives to not openly acknowledge such a weakness, so they probably over inflate their capabilities. It could explain why neither side actually seems focused on closing this deal.

@@magikavoncary To an extent, but remember Russia was relying on a lot of western oil companies for its oil industry prior to the war. China is an infrastructure power house but that does not mean they are good at all infrastructure, they don't have merely the same level of experience with pimples as they do with road, rail, and ports. Pipelines are more delicate and complicated that a lot of people give credit for, if something goes wrong it can have catastrophic consequences. Remember this is not just a pipeline but one that runs through a rather remote and hostile part of Siberia. Plenty can go wrong.

@@rooneytutoring Sure, maybe you're right. At least partially. But take this: before the war my country (Czechia) considered who is going to build new blocks in one of our (two:D) nuclear powerplants... basically, the most serious candidate was a Russian company Rosatom... I don't know. In my opinion they are perfectly capable to build pipelines. They've built or helped building some in Europe. But it might be my wishful thinking that there are more serious issues between Russia and China than just their inability.

The omission is not going to stop me from watching a William Spaniel production though, indeed I have trouble justifying not watching one. I'd like to think that when I am subscribed to so many channels that recommendations for most of them do not show in my feed, viewing the latest as soon as it shows should be considered the premium metric, above engagement even, though below watch time.

It's not very often someone can take a picture in China and I recognize a tree I had a run-in with 12 years ago. There's a pole in the background near the wall and 20-30 feet to the right is a tree with some notably thicker dark branches that once caught a plastic bag that blew out of my hands and got stuck in that very tree. I tried for 1/2 an hour to dislodge that bag with some small rocks we found nearby, being unable to actually descend and exit the wall itself. Oh the memories!
