As long as they continue doing everything they did in season 1 while bringing in new characters, scenario & environments of the league universe it can definitely hit the massive success again... and Riot can honestly repeat what Disney did all those years ago to make brilliant animated stories. [Edit] Oh, didn't know this video was talking about comparing Arcane to general anime we see released every season from Japan. Its sad that people don't want to invest a ton of money into potentially great ideas & stories like Arcane. A lot of innovative creative indie stuff isn't created simply because of fear of no money being made.

Yea as long as they keep the passion behind it then it will succeed. Because passion in the current entertainment industries is something that is lacking right now. Video games movies everything is filled with willingly mediocre trash. it pisses me off that people just accept it. Like i bet itd be frustrating as a artist knowing you could be way better but the limitations set by bullshit is what holds you back.

I think its less accurate to say “it has no lessons to bring to the world of cg (animation)” than “it has no lessons that business executives will listen to.” What we learned from the production of arcane is this- when we give artists and animators freedom, and time (like over half a decade) to absolutely perfect a narrative, we end up with a masterpiece. But since masterpieces are risky and aren’t always appreciated by the majority, we likely won’t see something like Arcane ever again. So long as artistry in animated television is limited by the interests of the people who “own” these shows.

Wait, was arcane a commercial failure? Do we know that?
@allcopsarebastards14782 жыл бұрын
@@jjoonathan7178 well I haven’t looked up whether riot or netflix actually made a profit on arcane but I assume that they did. The issue is that there were unique elements present in the production of arcane that aren’t conducive to the world of reliable cash cows we call television shows and movies. A lot of work was put into arcane to make it as amazing as it was, but time and artistic freedom were key factors. But the world of media is fast paced, and the narratives tend to be watered down to make them more palatable for the whole of America. There are exceptions, like Arcane, and gravity falls, among others. the bottom line is that media is most profitable when it does not make people uncomfortable, when it is produced on a tight schedule, when narrative nuance is pushed aside in favor of merchandise and advertising. Lukewarm stories that don’t rock the boat are most common for animated shows and movies because they are aimed at children who will fall in love with their characters and beg their parents for a poster or plushy, and better to have many 2D characters than just one real character that teaches real lessons. It’s kind of the same with adult animation- while there are some gems like Rick and Morty, F is for Family, or Inside Job, the vast majority of adult animated shows are filled with characters that don’t learn and only change for the sake of a punchline that’s been used thirty different times. It’s easier to write a show filled with slapstick-esque comedy and shock humor than it is to write a fleshed out critical reflection of the world we live in today. It’s safer, too. When we critique things, we invite both the knee jerk reactions of people who are comfortable with the way things are, and the thoughtful introspection of those who are not. Too many shows like arcane, where those who own the shows, the platforms, do not have full creative control, would pose a danger to those same individuals. The narratives they would profit off of would be written by the artists they have controlled and exploited, and would not guarantee commercial success.
@rammycanales37842 жыл бұрын
But it of course is, so it doesnt really matter. Its like "hey we did a big investment which will OBVIOUSLY be enough to do pretty much any story a great one, but we have absolutely no clue if it will be a commercial success by merit of art being subjective, so why risk it?"
@David-id6jw2 жыл бұрын
I think it goes a little further than that. Business Majors (TM) will look at things like Arcane and see nothing but a money sink. Great art, masterpiece, yada yada; Did it make money? Did we get back more money than we spent? If not, it's a failure. LoL is the biggest game in the world; why aren't they spending money on things that will make them more money? Incentivize players to spend more money, more time in game, etc? Which of course completely misses the point. LoL remains the most popular game in the world _because_ they spend money on things that make the fans happy, not "in spite of" doing so. Maybe not even things the players _want_ (such as game balance issues), and not necessarily things that will get them more players in any directly measurable way, but things that make the fans happy, and awed. This is branding in its most quintessential form. This is associating LoL with quality - in writing, in animation, in shear unbridled _experience_ . This keeps the fanbase - and thus the game franchise - alive. This means the game will keep performing for years to come, rather than collapse after some bad decisions, such as with Overwatch. This is investing in the fan base, the fan _culture_ , in a way that so many other platforms are failing to do (or are actively destructive in their handling of their fanbases). It means fans view them favorably no matter what side issues may come along with the actual product. Riot doesn't have the luxury of a monopoly (like, say, Verizon) that traps players and keeps money flowing in without any real investment on their part. If they drop the ball hard enough, people will leave in a heartbeat. When the business execs look at risk vs reward as the metric for what to invest in, they're automatically going to fail to produce something like Arcane, because Arcane isn't even playing in the same ballpark as them.

@T3kRazor2 жыл бұрын
What this Adult Swim exec fails to realise, or at the very least acknowledge in their tweet, is that Riot doesn't NEED to make money off Arcane. Riot is, first and foremost, a game development studio not an animation studio. The "success" of Arcane is intrinsic to the online buzz and its ability to grab people who aren't already playing their games, not necessarily the profit of Arcane itself. Riot almost definitely loses money on their cinematics (Warriors, Awaken, Rise, K/DA, GIANTS etc.) if you were to just narrow in on the cinematics and ignore the added interest seen in League/Worlds and increased profits from skin lines. Riot seems to understand that they'll see profit margins in their games as a result of what they make outside of the game. They collect tonnes of data and have analysts that pour through the data that have been able to point at stuff like the cinematics to say that they resulted in profits and increase play time in League. In this case, Arcane could be considered closer to a fan project instead of a self-contained industry project.
@T3kRazor2 жыл бұрын
To add to this, Riot is making more games of varying genres. Any buzz around the world of League is potential buyers/players for those games, let alone League. Aside from the official stuff Riot has posted, League has a bad press within the gaming community, yet Riot is able to keep getting profits from League as a result of the work of the animations. Riot also proved that they know how to bring people into their newer games and how to advertise to the target audience. They gave large streamers and youtubers(?) the ability to play the game early and gave away free passes to the game if you were to watch the streams - which resulted in more people watching the streams for potential drops. Remember that Valorant was stepping in direct competition to CS:GO, which has dominated the competitive shooter genre for years, and Valorant [seems to be] currently beating CS out for concurrent players
@crazydragy42332 жыл бұрын
@@T3kRazor Riot is no longer (just) selling League as a product. They're selling the Runetera universe. They're very smart by not containing themselves to a single thing for a limited time like many media producers do: make a movie for money then rinse and repeat. It's both more profitable, even if more complex, and safer because there's many different facets even if one fails, which nothing is immune to.

Let us say it in another way: Riot has produced Arcane as a "Thank You" for his players at the occasion of the 10th anniversary of League of legends. Also, technically Arcane only took about three years or so for it to be done. It got shelved for quite a while at the beginning of production before being resumed.

Yes, the risks of trying something like Arcane are huge. As said, there are too many unknowns. But it was done. It was good, it was great, it brought tears to the eyes of several spectators and aroused the eagerness to know and explore the scenario. Thousands of people have immersed themselves in the stories of the league of legends world because of Arcane. Today, it is not exaggerated to say that Arcane was a unique phenomenon of this generation. But he was not the first of his kind. In 2001 the world met The Lord of The Rings, the first film in a trilogy. The project was extremely risky, expensive and full of unknowns. Shooting three films simultaneously, with colossal scenarios, hundreds and in some cases thousands of people acting simultaneously, for years. But it was made, and it was glorious. In 1977 Star Wars hit theaters, brought on by the audacity of a handful of talented filmmakers, who fought tooth and nail to do the impossible, bring to the screen the conflicts and grandiose acts of heroes and villains performed a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. If only what was safe were done, none of these projects would have reached our eyes. The problem with the "entertainment industry" is precisely this aversion to risk, this paralyzing fear that ends up creating an endless repetition of the same projects and recipes. "Safe" movies and series, which do not take risks and are forgotten minutes after they end. Content to be watched, but never remembered. I know it's unlikely that something like Arcane will ever be done again, but I also know that this is a series that generations ahead will still watch and it will awaken the same feeling that it aroused in everyone who saw it.

Last year was an amazing year for mature-themed western animations. Invincible showed that you can successfully adapt an R-Rated comic book into something people will flock to. Then Arcane demonstrated that you can make a mature, thought provoking and emotionally charged cg show that deals with complex issues, and do it well. For me, Arcane is more than just pretty artwork. It's an well told story about people and their lives within their world. That is the lesson that should be learned. And that's a lesson that doesn't require a huge budget or time investment at all. Just a willingness to create real characters.

The show has brought very important lessons to the world of cg anime. The main take away for animation studios should be that hiring concept artists to paint your backgrounds is a lot cheaper than hiring 3D animators to build and texture every environment. Only the characters in Arcane were 3D. All of the backgrounds were painted and all of the effects were animated on twos in 2D. Pure 3D animation is only affordable for companies like Disney and Dreamworks. Anime has much tighter budgets and deadlines so cost savers like this could be a saving grace for CG anime studios.

The latter might be rarer than the former and it might only happen once a decade but it *will* happen. Plus the tech for animation is getting better and cheaper, computers are getting faster, more work can be done by fewer people so saying it wil NEVER happen? No. Perfect counter-example: Astartes.

Arcane was made so that even if you knew nothing about the game you weren't left in the dark as so many other video game movies or shows do. but to those who knew League it was extra special. and another thing is that if you know Riot and their cinematics team they are ALWAYS constant on producing jaw dropping videos. The visuals, music and story telling is over the top! so even though its rare for lightning to strike twice i believe they can do it. There is a huge amount of content to be made from the world of League of Legends!

Hang on, I feel like I keep being told that the whole "6 years in development" is an oversimplification and partly false. From what I have heard, it was so long because they made the pilot quite early (6 years before completion) and then they didn't touch it for a very long time, before they got the go ahead. So... Did they actually develop it for 6 years or not?

There’s no way it’s going to be easy, but I want to make something that’s really a work of art. Thing like this and into the spider verse and a lot of animes are really inspirational, and it might not happen soon, but I’m also still in high school and even started trying 2d animation and finding out how blender works (not easy haha) But anyway, hopefully you’ll see another piece of art in the future from yours truly

Biggest lesson, imo, is that executives need more experience in the artist world to understand how successes like arcane happen. Alternatively, and we're seeing this happen more and more (especially on open platforms like KZfaq), artists need to learn business to be able to administrate their own projects (or other artists) and network with the people who do have money.

I see so many "won't ever happen again" opinions about successfull things, that it's boring at this point... what made Arcane so good, is a buildup Riot made in their trailers thruout the years, expanding lore and characters until they could make a show about it. and while these trailers have been appreciated by gamers, they never had chance to go to mainstream until now so, to conclude my point: success like that of Arcane will absolutely happen again. actually it's probably already happening right now, piece by piece, but we won't see it untill it's until it's complete

I guess they just don't get it, Arcane was made mainly for its community that was asking it for a long time, it just so happens that it was that good and outsider likes it. With that, Riot understand that to make more profit they have to satisfy their community. And when they started to think of profit/money first, they mess it up, they lost more, just take a look at Ruination Event. So I guess Riot would get more losses if their community was unhappy. Nxt is that Riot is not putting deadline on this projects, so they are in no pressure of putting high quality animation. The community understand it. To be fair that 6 years was that long because they are just starting and new to the industry..

We’ll probably occasionally get risky shows or movies like Arcane in the future, of which some might be successful and many probably won’t. However, I think what Arcane does is it shows studios that certain things aren’t as risky as they may have thought. We’ll probably see more stuff like Arcane in terms of visuals and writers/animators might get a little bit more freedom as risk-adverse studios try to follow in Arcane’s steps. We won’t see any unexpected masterpieces from these legacy studios, but we will see improvements. The only Arcane-like risk taking that I could see happening is if any other game studios with cash to burn decide to throw a bunch of resources at their own show or movie. God forbid we get a Fortnite movie, but I could definitely see Epic games venturing further into animation to the point of making a show or movie, and they certainly have the cash to throw at it if they wanted the artists to put in a bunch of love and effort.

This show is once in a lifetime achievement. I hope they can do it again with season 2. The thing with arcane is that is not just the animation, or the story, it's the voice acting, it's the soundtrack, the editing, the camera shots, the sound design. Every single shot shows their passion for this project, everyone working on this project brought their A+ game and it shows.

Part of the issue with a long development time of 6 years, is usually with an entertainment company, (network, channel, studio, etc) you are going to more than likely have a regime change or ownership change at some point over that ammount of time, and often the 1st thing the new folks do is axe everything in development so to start new with what they were brought on to do different.

I'm sure the cost of it was (probably way) higher than a 'normal' animated show; but the 6 year factor is probably somewhat overblown. It did take that long, but for several different reasons. Some of which is probably just about massively expanding the studio, Fortiche, that only had a handful of people into a larger animation studio capable of handling a project of this scope. Some of it is about lack of connections within the movie/TV-business, that had to be established. Recruitment of people in everything from art direction, editing, acting, and everything behind the scenes that goes into making something like this. A more experienced studio would have all of that organisation in place already, and my guess is that at least 2 of those 6 years could be subtracted due to this alone. An established studio could probably produce something of comparable visual quality within 2 years, if only given enough resources to do so. Now that the organisation IS in place for Arcane, it wont take 6 years for season 2, obviously. A completely "new" show may not ever get the chance for such a high budget due to the risks; but an established franchise (just as LoL was) may. Will it transform the animation scene, to make every show look as polished as Arcane? No. But will we, every now and then, get a show with similar visual quality? I think yes!
@halycon4042 жыл бұрын
I don't really agree with this. Arcane didn't come out of nowhere with that studio. The big thing, to me at least, fortiche had years with the property making content. A decade of cinematics, experimenting with dozens of styles. They had time to learn how to make things in the universe of League of Legends. What worked, what didn't. So when they finally got a show they could go big. Staffing is important and all that. But the time with it. Everyone at the studio had worked with a league of legends project. They were all intimately familiar with it. That's something that cannot be bought and staffing won't make happen. It's expertise.

I think what will happen instead of this, is that you will start seeing companies start setting up inhouse animation studios, hypergryph,mihoyo,sony and marvel are all doing this, while I don't know how if the ARknights anime will be in 3d or not, the fact that they've developed a team over a few years to work on 3d animation exclusively and given them time to adapt allows them to have some of the best 3d animation out there. I think the issue is that 3d animation is often used as a crutch to speed thing s along instead of as a tool to tell unique stories. I Don't think Arcane will be the bellweather, but it will be a standard for companies that are doign their own projects to follow. It might also help if studios started specailizing in 3d or not as well, instead of trying to do both.

I will say that a project like Arcane may make one more good season, maybe even a great season. However, we need to face facts. This is not live action, it is animated. They can't crank out seasons adding up to a run time of over six hours. It normally takes multiple years to produce an animated film with the quality of Arcane and those films are at best a third of the run time of Arcane. It comes down to this. If the series is rushed to meet the demand, it will fail. If the series takes too long to maintain the quality, it will fail. This is a tightrope of opportunity happening here. Look at a show like Rick and Morty. Arguably a great first two seasons, taking multiple years between each one. What happened when they hired more writers, more staff and started pumping out seasons yearly? The quality fell apart. The show died, or at least it should be dead. The best projects are great because they are rare. A diamond found in an unlikely place. That's what Arcane is and whether or not lightning can strike twice has yet to be determined, but I would strongly suggest any fans against hedging bets.
@blazingyuki76822 жыл бұрын
I agree, when I watched season 1 I felt drawn into it, but it felt rushed, not in time production but rather how the story progressed with each character changed with the time skips they had in the show. Arcane is still a very big success, but I don't see season 2 topping that in less than 6 years

After watching this series and seeing how it was made, I've gotten a lot of insight of how to create something of true quality and perfection. But I totally get how money is a huge factor when it comes to producing movies and shows, especially if they are of this caliber that's unlike anything we've ever seen before. I'm currently in a film school and I have this really awesome idea for a movie that I want to direct and write for with singular vision in my long-term career, but for it to be as good as I want it to be, I'll have to work for an independent studio and pitch my idea there. Because then I would have no restrictions and no progressive checklist or agenda to follow. If I've learned anything from watching Arcane and its creative direction behind it, it is stuff like this with pure creative vision made by all animators and artists are the best sorts of things that could come to life on screen. And I want to do the same in my long-term career, by being a director, writer, and concept artist, to follow and achieve my dream of making something I would love and putting it out there for everyone to see.

How many franchises are threadbare and end of life because they were seen as safe? If the lessons Arcane provides aren’t internalized by the industry as a whole and applied in some small but meaningful way, the idea of only doing what is safe will continue to deliver diluted and derivative rehashed refuse. It is arrogant to say there will never be another Arcane-of course there will. The tools and the talent exist in the world and will come together in some unexpected way to deliver something that inspires and delights us-Arcane is proof of this. In my opinion, the real lesson of Arcane isn’t that it needs to be a new idea. The lesson is, no matter what franchise you want to reboot-prequel-sequel-regurgitate because it’s safe, don’t suck at it! Tell a compelling story with interesting characters and bring passion and talent to the project instead of mailing it in because you think people are too stupid to notice or care… we aren’t and we do.

There will never be another show like it again" - do you have any idea how many times I've heard that line uttered? This is where being old works in my favour: No you can 100% have shows like this again, From ATLA to AT to Arcane you just need to put in the work. It requires a METICULOUS attention to detail, collaboration on story and not being risk averse. All the great show which have stood the test of time have proven this. That's the formula. If you don't believe me, Hasbeen Hotel exists. Show and story telling is a labour of love. When the production reflects that, you get great stories.

Nah, we will see shows like that pretty soon. Costs of animation dropped drastically and are still going down Pretty soon AI will be able to simplify the process and reduce the costs of making an animated show even more. So yeah making a show like Arcane was a very big risk NOW, it won't be such a big risk in 5 or 10 years. Soon smaller indie animation studios will be able to do pretty amazing stuff and take risks with more interesting stories. Did you seen "Astartes Project"? It was one incredibly talented guy who did that. Look at video games, I very rarely play AAA games anymore, there is plenty of amazing indie games that have way more heart, tell better stories or simply are more fun. I think something similar will happen with animated show.

As a 3D modeling and animation student whose about to graduate college. The art is amazing, I keep rewatching scenes because of the artistic decisions. Also I can say as a modeler I think this will happen again. We have seen now that it can work, and so I would not be surprised if they push it even more. We have already seen 3D animated shoes be made thousands of times now. It’s just putting new story’s now. Riot took this long because they don’t have a tv sized team. But we have already seen people make this quality of work before for tv shows that didn’t take this long to make. And especially with tv slowly dying and streaming services taking over. The risks don’t really exist anymore. I 100% believe something like arcane will happen again because we have seen it happen, and for artist that’s enough for us to do it again. Hell the best part about being a 3D artist is that I get to make stuff no one has ever made before. I get shit by people telling me I can’t make something because it hasn’t been made before, my most recent example is a purple trident. I was told it wouldn’t work as a metal trident because there’s not a reference to use, but I did it anyway, and it looks badass. I would be very surprised if this didn’t happen again. Also people need to stop calling this a cg anime. This is 3D animation done with some amazing 3D models, and overall 3D artwork. None of this fits the style of anime, which is an art style and not a genre. Calling this a cg anime takes away from the work that was put into this.

I think arcane, like most passion projects that end up breaking many many many molds in their industries and genres in terms of storytelling, aesthetic, and budget, is a stunning masterpiece. Studio Fortiche and Riot have truly set a very high bar showing what is possible with 3d animation. Arcane took 6 years to make and in that time the tools animators have at their disposal have also come a long way. With Arcane to set an example as the end product, I'm sure there will be people who are able to create something similar with less time and money (albeit not as refined most likely) Like you said, I feel like saying arcane has no lessons to impart on 3d animation is a bit shallow and that the AS guy was probably a little envious of what they had achieved and all the attention Arcane was getting. I don't think he was completely wrong, Its probably going to be a long time before we see something like arcane again, especially in western media, where animation isn't seen as a serious medium, and only used for kids and comedy for the most part, especially when we all know the people in charge of the funding of animated series want to go for safe bets and minimize cost as much as possible, meaning experimentation is largely out of the question. However, I don't believe he was completely correct either. I think overcoming western media's existing connotations and stigmas regarding animation as a medium is the key to more innovation and efficiency in creating pieces like arcane, where 3d animation and CGI isn't slapped in jarringly as a way to make as much profit possible a la marvel, but is used as its own artstyle looking stylized and intentional. Arcane, promare, Kubo and the 2 Strings. They all look vastly different, and yet mix 3d CGI seamlessly into their art to great effect, creating mixed media works with stunning visual appeal. I think if people try to mindlessly copy the look of arcane they will never compare, however taking the tricks and tips Fortiche used to create arcane it might let people inspired by arcane to work pieces of it into their own work, and overtime lead to the development and improvement to the animation industry as a whole.

I do think that there will be more shows, series, comics, art, and movies that try to emulate Arcane's style and story but I don't think there will be as many factors and risks involved, however I do think we'll see sometime in the future something that is just as out-there as Arcane was. Maybe it will come from India, or Russia, or France, or maybe even from an international studio, I have genuine hope that art-entertainment eventually grows to the point that taking risks will become more frequent, that may be too optimistically placed and even phrased in this context, but this won't be the last 'Arcane'. It most likely won't continue to be as amazing as it started, but maybe due to the 'mere exposure' effect we'll still love it, and maybe, almost hopefully I wish that we get more content like Arcane, these deeply philosophical narratives, filled with intrigue, passion, and genuine love for its characters. One day we'll have a series no one expected to amass to anything, no one expected to exist, no one knew of the passion, and hardships it went through, one day we'll have a Bellwether for 'Arcanes' (so to say).

I believe it’s narrow minded to believe that no other show now or in the future can reach the amount of success arcane has, in fact I believe it further expanded the idea for creatives in the industry to actually slow down and take their time developing their work no matter how long it may take. Often times in general on media is rushed by a deadline. This small amount of time barely allows workers to flesh out a piece or go beyond their level of skills. I’m someone who self-taught myself animation at the age of 16 and would always drew for myself since there weren’t any deadlines to follow. My art improved MASSIVELY including me (before school). I had a lot of time on my hands to research, be consistent, take care of myself and breaks. Time and patience is the key to improvement, If we had the same habits applied in this the fast-paced industry, animation, shows, designs and much more would have a tremendous leap of quality and would open the door for more creatives to pursue a career in the field

Because video game adaptations are very very hard to succeed until Detective Pikachu came out in 2019 and sonic the move the year after then yet again with mortal kombat 2021 but It was a moderate success but I’m still looking at the box office for uncharted movie and I’m a bit skeptical for halo but I’m hoping one day Netflix or any other stream service on Amazon or Hulu does a live action titanfall series
