It's been 20 years since The Truman Show predicted...well...the last 20 years. Here is a brief documentary explaining how the film was made, its meaning, its impact, and its legacy.

Before reality TV exploded in the mainstream, this film predicted it. Here’s everything you need to know about the film The Truman Show.
Behind the scenes
Andrew Niccol first came up with the idea for the film back in 1991. He called it “The Malcolm Show,” and it was a pretty dark science fiction thriller, set in New York City, about a guy who was living in a reality TV show but did not know it. After Niccol completed the script, producer Scott Rudin bought it for more than $1 million. Paramount Pictures took it on, and hired Australian filmmaker Peter Weir to direct it. Weir wanted the movie to be less dark and funnier, and so he and Niccol got together to re-work the script sixteen times. They eventually called it The Truman Show.
In 1995, Paramount signed Jim Carrey to be the main star, the one to play Truman Burbank. However, 1995 was a crazy year with him in movies like The Cable Guy and Liar Liar, so it’d be another year before he was available to film. Because Weir felt Carrey was perfect for the role, he agreed to postpone production to wait for him. Carrey took a huge pay cut for the role. They decided on Seaside, Florida, as the primary location for filming. Seaside is a “master-planned community” famous for being designed for walkable neighborhoods and its unique architecture. It’s ridiculously picturesque, which is why the producers chose it, as they also relied on Norman Rockwell paintings, 1940s Sears and Roebuck catalogs, and 1960s postcards to influence set design.
Weir went all in with this one, even creating a novel about the show’s history. He created backstories for the characters and told all the actors to create their own backstories as well. Ed Harris was called in as a last minute replacement to play Christoff. In fact, Harris and Carrey never met each other on set as Carrey’s parts were filmed before Harris joined up.
The producers put a lot of emphasis on cinematography, led by cinematographer Peter Biziou. They instructed the actors to lean into the cameras with their eyeballs wide open. Everything was well-lit, with the idea that every product seen in every shot would be for sale. Since much of the cameras in the film are supposed to be hidden, a wide variety of shots were used. Some of the camera angles are just strange. Whenever they filmed Truman Burbank, they often used an iris shot or a fish-eye lens to create the impression that every shot zoomed in on him was done in secret. As Truman would discover more and more about his true nature throughout the film, less of these shots were used. Philip Glass provided the minimalist piano-based soundtrack.
Producers filmed The Truman Show between December 1996 and April 1997. Despite filming in Florida in paradise, some of those January and February filming dates were fairly cold. Some of the filming also took place in Los Angeles. They made it for $60 million, $20 million under budget. Once completed, it took forever for Paramount to release it. Originally they wanted it out in August 1997, but it ultimately wasn’t released officially until June 5, 1998. It was a box office hit, eventually making over $264 million. It currently is certified 94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and is one of the highest rated films of all time on IMDb. It won a ton of awards, and was notably nominated for three Academy Awards.
Plot
Here is the basic storyline, and of course there are no major spoilers- I want you to watch it yourself if you haven’t already. So Truman Burbank is the star of The Truman Show, a reality TV show, broadcast live around the world and around the clock. Truman is the star, yet he does not know it. Everyone else on the show, however, does. They are all actors, and some of them have grown up or grown old on camera alongside Truman, pretending to be his mom, or his dad, or his best friend, or even his wife. The town Truman lives in, Seahaven Island, is just a gigantic set, the largest the world has ever known, in fact, all enclosed in a giant dome in Hollywood. Approximately 5,000 cameras constantly monitor Truman’s day-to-day behavior. The producers of the Truman Show, in order to prevent Truman from ever leaving and realizing his whole reality is just a, you know, set, raised Truman to be afraid of the water, through the drowning death of his fake dad or even the use of propaganda. So any time Truman talks about traveling far away, the actors in his life strongly try to talk him out of it.

One thing I should have added about the film that I've thought a lot about in the past three years since I made this video... The film is also about indoctrination and escaping indoctrination. Christof talks about the set as a place that is utopian and as a safe place in a crazy world. "I have given Truman the chance to lead a normal life. The world, the place you live in, is the sick place." Despite this world he created being supposedly so utopian, Truman still wants to escape. I think it is comparable to those trying to escape a cult or religion, or some other kind of indoctrination that they grew up with. Leaving means difficult challenges and perhaps never seeing people you love ever again. But leaving also seems like the only rational thing to do.
@haileymarie484
@haileymarie484 3 жыл бұрын
this is incredibly late, but i also think it’s important to note that, despite claiming to “give Truman the “chance to live a normal live” Christof has gone out of his way to hurt and traumatize Truman throughout his whole life. The death of his dad is the most obvious example of this. While the death of his dad may have primarily been in order to give Truman a fear of the water so that he wouldn’t be tempted to “escape”, there would have been other, possibly more effective ways to prevent that. Instead Christof knowingly chose to put Truman through of the most traumatic things possible, at such a young age. Christof knows this, he knows what he’s done to Truman, and yet he is extremely confident in the idea that he has given Truman a desirable life that can’t be experienced in the real world. Perhaps if Christof had in fact succeeded in giving Truman a fulfilling life in the world that he had created for him, Truman would never be inclined to escape.

What's so heartwarming about this movie is that even the biggest fans of Truman's show - even the people in the Truman themed bar, even the two old ladies who have presumably watched the show every day of his life - are rooting for him, not for the show. When it becomes clear that Truman wants out, they want him to make it. That's a sign of real love right there.

@@TheJustbristol27 but if the show goes on too long with him wanting out yet not being able to get out, it sorta gets old I need to see this movie because a few years before Truman Show came out I thought up this very same plot. Ironically it was about the same amount of years it would take producers to create the movie. Also ironic is how I saw Jim Carrey perform stand-up comedy around the same time. The Truman show is basically well-plotted stuff...It can be a country that you belong to/culture that you are involved in/religion and faith that you believe in/social expectation that you have to adhere to... Maybe our whole lives can be a plotted show. Look at the general life cycle, from birth, going to school, getting a job, marrying another one, giving birth, aging, death... even the final show(death scene) is the same for everyone. Everyone's body breaks down to the dust and ultimately disappears. The degree, scale, extent of each person's life is different (For example, their wealth, thinking level, etc) but basically, human life is alike one another.

Only this morning, I was thinking that "The Truman Show," "The Matrix," and "They Live" are valuable resources for understanding something that I call "decision landscaping." Decision landscaping is an expansion of choice architecture, the latter of which is the means by which our choices (such as dishes in a serving line) are influenced by how they're positioned, presented, or framed. Decision landscaping is the way elements of popular culture (such as multiple choice tests, which teach us not to look beyond the predetermined options presented to us by authority figures) shape our perceptions of reality. Of the three movies I mentioned, "The Truman Show" is more meaningful than "The Matrix."

Here goes my thoughts... Back in 2013, I was miserable. I was stuck in my hometown, teaching for a principal I hated, being mistreated at every professional level. I wanted to escape so bad, I applied to EVERY University of California doctoral program I could find. I think I sent out 9-12 applications, and one came back with an acceptance AND financial aid. I was so happy when I read the letter I cried. My wife and child were so excited to move with me to California. Then...we shared the news. We were AMAZED at how many people tried to tell us it was a bad idea. People would literally ask me what I was going to do with my family if I took the offer, as if they could not come with me. Even our families were not so keen to the idea, but they knew we would do what we wanted either way. It was insane how much people were telling us to just stay put and to leave our ambitions alone. Then about a week before we left, we watched The Truman Show on Netflix. About 30 minutes in, we both looked at each other and said, "this is freaky." The way the people treated Truman and his desire to leave were almost IDENTICAL to the way the people in our hometowns were behaving. It was almost like a direct message telling us to just push forward. 7 years later, I have no regrets.

I want to start by saying I just found your channel today. So far I've seen your video on office space and the Truman show. Both are two of my favorite shows and I thought you did a great job covering them. From what I've seen you have great content and deserve more subscribers. The second thing I would like to say is that I would love to see you do a video on the movie pleasantville, it has similar themes as the Truman show and they even both came out in the same year in 1998. I would love to hear your perspective on pleasantville.

IF this was real, it would be a blast to be an extra on the show. However it's hard to picture such a show existing, because the cost of making it would exceed any money they could make off the show. Worst yet, most shows don't survive past 20 years. Imagine what would happen if the show was cancelled and Truman finds out that way.

@@davjlee I think the very deliberately kept any sexual ideas from growing in Truman. Think about it. If they paid an actress to suck or fuck Truman, the audience would be appalled. Besides, look at him, he is 100% virgin. Doesn't even know where babies come from.

Probably not-in one scene, the wife asks Truman to "come to bed with her", then we cut to an audience member who says that, whenever that happens, music plays and the camera pans away-implying that Truman HAS had sex (presumably protected, seeing as how the wife has never been pregnant), but it has never been shown on screen.

I would've mentioned the point that Truman's main motivation for getting out of Seahaven was "real love" (meaning he could sense that no one in his world actually cared about him, much less affirmed him) that he had felt from one person (Sylvia) throughout his entire life. Even his father struggled to get back to Truman not out of fatherly love, but just because he wanted his job back.
