Aid organizations and the UN have a decades-old pattern of sexual abuse and solicitation of prostitution in countries ravaged by natural disasters and conflict. VICE World News looks at these organizations that help those that are most in need, but also perpetuate a history of violence and a colonial past.

This is a normal occurrence with the UN. My partner did international law and was involved in bringing this up. She was shut up, she'd work to the bone bringing these issues up. Instead policy makers would just nod their heads and go on with their day. She now works at a local charity and feels like she's doing more for the world.

I also studied International law and wrote my thesis on the impunity of UN workers and the organization. I argued strongly that some sort of policing is necessary, things that happened in Bosnia ( I am Bosnian), Rwanda, Haiti, Siri Lanka and elsewhere need to stop. I understand that the reputation of the UN has to be upheld and that if these incidents are punished, countries might be more reluctant to send their soldiers. But UN needs to at least organize internal courts and give opportunities to victims to speak up, and before all they need to stop sending trained soldiers to peace keep. It might be more costly, but some sort of peacekeeping training is necessary.

Used to admire the UN so much when i was young. I did model-UN multiple times, went to college for global security and refugee migration with the dream of joining UN. Then, as I did my research on refugee movements in South Sudan, Sudan, I saw how many dozens of reports from locals of mass abuse on behalf of UN officials and how many of these localized migrations were after UN peacekeeping forces arrived. Then I looked at every place in which the UN is operating and compare. Then disillusioned, looked at the internal policies and saw how 5 countries use it to exploit en masse and how dictators use the UN to fund their own human rights violations. What was going to be a paper on how the UN Peacekeeping forces can bring stability and bring in long term security became a paper on how locals and refugees can create defensive measures to protect against both UN and local forces. It is a truly sad affair when refugees are exploited by an institution meant to protect them and are exploited on all fronts. UN is a joke, sadly. If you want to help, join a local NGO, or someone highly credited like B'Tselem.

Agreed. I have talked to multiple former Indian peacekeepers who worked for UN, and they hated everything about the organisation. The bureaucracy, the mismanagement, the pathetic supervisors, the terrible people masquerading as "aid" workers, lack of co-ordination, training ... And these folks were stationed in Sierra Leone in early 2000s, probably the most successful UN intervention. If that's what the most successful intervention looks like, imagine the average scenario

Once a close guy to me was given order to evacuate wounded Kenyan guys from an ambush in his Mi-35. So he goes to the spot, rescues 3 Kenyans under intense small arms fire, brings them to the helo as a medic performs first aid...and that's when a Kenyan states that all three are HIV positive. He said that he certainly felt such queasy... The Kenyan JTACs did say about their condition to the command post, and the Command post never forwarded that to the helo crews. Slow claps

Your comment is a joke. Its horrible that, as you say, un workers are responsible for dozens of abuses, but the un has prevented thousands or millions of abuses. What would happen to refugees without unhcr, what would people in poor countries do without the WHO?
@sleepyboi8060
@sleepyboi8060 3 жыл бұрын
@@Johmatri You are free to do your own research. Ive worked for NGOS in Cambodia and Colombia and the United States. I know hundreds of colleagues in the industry including people who formerly worked for the UN. Many if not most people I know and have worked within an NGO have a rather negative perception of the UN and its subsequent branches. To say im denying any good they've done is a strawman to detract from the original point. Which is that the UN is broken beyond reform and is used as a vehicle for the powerful to abuse others and escape accountability. And many of those refugees wouldn't be refugees if the founding members didnt engage in imperialism and then intentionally draw their former colonies borders in such a way that guaranteed conflict during decolonization and subsequently corrupting the entirety of their political systems for capital gain in the post colonial globalized era. Also, cough, Rwanda.

@@Johmatri and to be clear the UNHCR despite its stated goals of temporary housing, educational improvement, and self-sufficiency within respective camps; it has never done that once. Every single camp set up is set up as a temporary camp and then becomes a permanent settlement of permanently impoverished and vulnerable peoples. While the UN and UNHCR should clear as day see these institutions are permanent settlements as a result of the inefficiency or total ineptitude of the local governments (as well as the growing anti-refugee movement in the west) and institute changes. Changes that have already been successfully employed in places like 6th of October refugee camp in Egypt. They could change their aid policy to focus on infastructual changes such as drip-irrigation, basic defensive structures and strategies, etc... there are so many clear as day solutions but they do not do them. They are an innefficient beurocratic mess.

Hello! How are you all? If anyone needs someone to listen, someone to talk to, or a friend. I am here to talk, listen, and be a friend. I hope you all are safe and well. Know that you are amazing and have rights as a human. I am very sorry for anything that seems bad that may have happened in your life. I want you to know that you are incredible and are capable of wonders. What matters is your inside, not your exterior. Love yourself and cherish yourself. Words cannot explain how astonishing you are. You deserve care, love, and happiness, don't let anything make you feel otherwise. Please have appropriate action for anything that you know is wrong. Anything that seems bad or wrong in your life right now will get better. Please don't do what is wrong, fighting back and harming others will not solve the problem. Please understand that and do the good thing. It will one day come back to you. The people in the world are so much more than what we know about them, not everyone opens up about the beautiful things and acts they have witnessed, not all those amazing doings are acknowledged. Please understand that and know that. If you feel like no one cares about you, know that I care about you. Keep your head up high and never give up. Together, we can be a better community! Stay safe, healthy, happy, kind, understanding, positive and strong!

The further away from your area you get the worse it is... Very sad and discouraging but you shouldn't give up and try your own way to help somebody, at least nearby. Mid 90's, I used to be a liaison for an executive protection firm (my work was in LA and PR related) that often was contracted for work in NYC during UN meetings there. The main guy I dealt with told me that the high-end escort services watch the UN schedule for NYC very carefully because it's a huge part of their more important and profitable business, and that the security guys had to "deal with this" aspect when protecting principals they were contracted to protect (would get told name and description of a "lady visitor" that they need to facilitate "contacting" the principal, would be told when/where it would be going down, or "let her in the hotel and hotel room when she shoes up", basically). So zero of this shocks me.
