I had a Yugo GVX for US market that was never exported due to sanctions back in '92. While it was in top condition, it reached 160 km/h (100 mph) with 2 ppl inside, but it had proper maintanance. We sold it 2 years ago, and it still had a bunch of original parts. For almost 10 years that we had it, it stopped on the road 4 times, and all 4 times it ran out of fuel, and I liked it very much.

Hello there fellow youtuber. I am from Serbia, and i like your review. My dad bought a 1989 Yugo 60 from my aunt back in 1991 , and after 26 of service he sold it like dirt cheap to a friend because of corosion, and bought 2008 Skala 55 (Zastava 101) as a second car. Absolutely right abought how some people threated the the cars, not providing the basic servicing and wanted them to work. Back in the early 80s Zastava produced cars with a man with the most basic knowledge could repair, and Yugoslav people liked to self repair their cars. Id like to travel across the whole USA in a Yugo. There are lots of domestic jokes about Yugo, but i liked my Yugo. For that price range is a good car, and anual costs are also cheap in Serbia. Best regards.

Hi Austin! There is actually a small disinformation about the history of the car which was officially known as the Yugo Koral 45. It is not a FIAT licensed car, nor is it based on any FIAT model directly, yes some parts are based of the FIAT 127 but the whole car is genuinely conceived, developed and built by Zastava. The car is in it's own right a true "south-slavic" design, which is even less flattering than the other way around. :) The car THAT IS actally based on the FIAT 128 and was built parallel to the Yugo 45 is the Zastava Skala / Model 101, nicknamed "Stojadin" (almost literally meaning onehundred-one in ol' Serbo-Croat), which had slightly better build quality and power (which wasn't really a surprise considering how bad the Koral 45 was), but it was in fact so successful in many east-european countries and serbia, that it was in production until 2008. Ironically both cars were manufactured in the city of Kragujevac, in exactly the same factory which was bombed by NATO in a US led intervention back in 1999. After the bombing, which destroyed almost the entire factory, the production was haltet until the Factory was rebuild, but never reached it's former output of about 200,000 vehicles annually again. Today Zastava is building FIAT licensed cars again, especially for the eastern-european market. I hope I could shed some light about the history of the car, please don't get me wrong, it is still a suprisingly honest and unbiased video, which I enjoyed very much, thank you! Greetings from Germany!

very bad information from germany, knowing your discipline and precision, you should have done better job! the car is ENTIRELY BASED on fiat 127. its front and rear suspension are almost identical. everything is built around basic design of fiat 127. the engine with 903 ccm and 45 hp is identical like basic engine from fiat 127. the gearbox is not as good as fiat's, but that's zastava's fault! about 'south-slavic' - well, it was designed by giugaro who created golf mk1 an original panda and in its simple boxy lines it's pretty obvious. prejudice does miracle to some people.... 1116 ccm and 1301 ccm engines are derived from fiat 128. since zastava 101 was hatchback version of fiat 128 (mechanically everything was interchangeable), zastava already had engines and 'boxes from older car, so they only put it in yugo. this information comes directly from serbia and it's easy to know real story if you live here. another thing for german 'full of crap' friend - zastava builds fiat 500l these days and the car is made for every single market on which it is present.
@AdrianoCROST6 жыл бұрын
"yes some parts are based of the FIAT 127" WHOLE CAR is based on Fiat 127. Yugo Florida is build by Yugo but not designed by Yugo. "Today Zastava is building FIAT licensed cars again, especially for the eastern-european market." Zastava don't build anything except weapons. Car factory is sold to Fiat, renamed to "Fiat Automobili Srbija" (Fiat cars Serbia), renovated and equiped with modern Fiat machinery. They produce Fiat 500L now for european and american market.

I will never forget the first Yugo I ever saw (in the late 70's?). It was white, on display at the Polish festival in Hamtramck, a city inside Detroit where American cars are made. Being a strong UAW union town, I was half expecting everybody to be throwing rocks at it, but the incredibly low price made it one of the biggest attractions at the festival. I never knew anybody who bought one though, and if I recall correctly they had to be ordered and there was a long waiting time. I don't think anybody took it too seriously, but it was a fascinating product that could not be ignored. It forced people to acknowledge that there was some serious foreign competition out there on the horizon.

Hi, I wrote from Italy, my first car was a new Innocenti Koral 45 = Yugo 45: 903cm3, 4 gears speed. It was a great car! It was a new car but it was cheaper than a new Fiat Panda 750. The Koral45 had a solid metal bodywork it was thicker than Fiat Panda 750. The Koral45 metal bodywork never ever get rusty, instead the Fiat Panda 750 always get rusty. The 2 car had different engine but both are solid and relialibe and easy to maintain but Koral45 had 903cm³ instead of 750cm³. The Koral45 had 45HP and it was better than Fiat Panda 750 with 34HP. The Koral45 had a max speed of 140Km/h, it was better than Fiat Panda 750 with 125Km/h. The Koral45 and Fiat Panda 750 had same gadget inside, and same 5 persons seat belts. The Koral45 burnt few gasoline for all trips, it offered 17.5km/litres and 14Km/litres in urban trips. The Koral45 had 2 front cosy rests head saddled, so they were better than Fiat Panda 750 because Fiat Panda 750 had 2 horrible plastic front head saddled. The Koral45 had a nice servobrake, instead Fiat Panda 750 never ever had a servobrake. Unfortunatly, the Koral45 had a bad 4+RM gears speed, it was worse then Fiat Panda 750 with 5+RM gears speed. bye

It's Zastava, not Zastiva. There are still Zastava cars being manufactured and there's still a Zastava weapons manufacturer, called Zastava Arms.
@AdrianoCROST6 жыл бұрын
Zastava cars are not manufactured anymore ! Zastava cars are sold to Fiat and they are Fiat branded cars now. "Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) unit has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Serbian government for the acquisition of Zastava's Kragujevac plant on 7 May 2008. The memorandum of understanding foresees a new company being set up in which the Italian group would have a 67% of stake and the Serbian government acquiring 33% of stake in the new company. A new company was named Fiat Automobili Srbija. The new company would make a total investment in the region of 700 million euros, with the government contributing 200 million euros to this. The Zastava plant would produce two new Fiat models, rejecting previous reports the plant could produce the 500 compact city car." The last Zastava branded car rolled out of the factory on 21 November 2008.

Had a 1987 GV, 52hp, 84mph top speed and 30-32mpg. What do you want for $3995?
@mirokefurt47407 жыл бұрын
Poor Mileage ? Low top Speed ? Slow Acceleration ? 1.) First take all your spark plugs out and check compression should be 155 or more 2.) Check your timing belt timing, if it is one tooth off the car will have all those problems 3.) Check ignition timing advance, should be 10 BTDC STATIC and advance with vacuum and engine speed, if it does not it is stuck distributor, usually lubricating it will fix that. 4.) If all ABOVE is 100% then you just need to clean up the carburetor. The car should get 40+ MPG on 87 octane gasoline, and have no problem to go 70 MPH uphill on 5% grade and 118 on level road (no wind). If you are absolutely terrible driver then 26 MPG is possible in a CITY and about 33 MPG on highway at WOT. Anything less and the engine is not properly tuned, or has low compression due to use of a poor quality lubricants. One of the biggest problems with YUGO was and still is the lack of actual car mechanics that understand how things work and can perform such basics as a "tune-up".

Serb here. Yes, Zastava (banner/flag). In the City of Kragujevac cars and arms are the most well knows products, because here was built a first foundy in modern Serbia, after taking back the independence from Turks in 1830. Yugo production stopped in november 2008, and today Zastava is owned by 51-49 by FIAT and the State of Serbia. ATM the produce the new FIAT 500.

I knew a mechanic who did some cutting and put a fiat engine into a Yugo. He beat out a weaker Porsche, title for title in a drag race. I suppose the Porsche owner lost his wife and had to leave town. I owned two. I paid $400 & $500 each (used) and owned them 4 and 5 years in the 1990's. It got good mileage for the time so while others laughed, I was laughing to the bank. I raced another Yugo (my brothers) going up and down Jellico mountain in Tennessee. We went 45mph going up and 110 going down. Smokey was pulling over speeders but left us alone. I suppose he thought his radar was malfunctioning and what judge would believe him anyway? They could carry my 13" mirror telescope (with the passenger seat forward, the scope was over 5ft long) but when I also took my dog, I punched its face every time I changed gears. When the cost of gasoline shot up to $5.00 a gallon in 2008, I wished I had them as I could have sold them at good profit. There are many other stories, laugh at the Yugo if you wish but I miss them. How many cars today last about a year for every $100 paid? Today, we have the catalytic converter law and we bombed the Yugo plant (which made us many enemies). Yet while adjusting for inflation: To this day, the Yugo remains the best value of any car in history and I am daring the reader to say I am wrong.

great video! it's nice to see that it's not trashed just because it is a Yugo... when judging it, people usually are not capable to judge it with correct perspective! its design and development finished in 1979, so Yugo is mechanically, technologically and engineering wise - a product of mid 70'! and it should be judged as such! the fact that it came to America in second half of 80', as well as the fact that it was produced basically unchanged for far too long, does not change that it simply is what it is... a car from 70'! 1979 Volkswagen Polo technologically and equipment-wise was not much better car... it arguably was better built and in some ways "smoother" car, but it too would be considered as similar "c"ap" if somebody would try to sell it as "new" like 10 years after...people in such comparisons simply neglect the fact, that technology, build quality, equipment levels and everything else started to advance exponentially with each new vehicle, right at the time when Yugo came to America, while Yugo comes from the times where changes (as well as generation replacements) were much slower... in many respects well over a decade long cycles... ;)

I graduated in 93 so these were a common thing during my teen years. I remember the kids parents who had those Yugos lived hell at school. The poor saps almost had to be whipped to open the door and get out of the Yugo when their parent would drop them off at school. Personally I didn't think much about them either way. I guess to say I'm glad I wasn't one of the kids who were almost driven to suicide because my parents had a Yugo. My first vehicle was a K5 GM Blazer that my dad helped me strip and totally restore. It was much nicer than a brand new one at the time. He was a custom welder and it had really awesome pipe bumpers with new mag wheels and mudder tires. In it's time it was a show piece. Anyway it always drew a crowd and jelous kids made threats to key it or do something to it. Finally I built an enclosed building for it and bought a Renault Alliance. It was the most stripped down 4 door sedan I'd ever seen. It would fit just about anywhere a gocart would fit. It did have an A/C that would freeze coffee in the cup. At that time if I had found a Yugo I would have bought it instead. Sometimes something like this little Yugo is a well more suitable ride that something too plush and fancy.

My dad used to change 3rd to 4th gear only using a knee, since the shifter is long and close enough to the leg, lol. Seven year old me cried when he sold the yugo......and I still love that car! Btw, you pronounce it like ZAS-TEE-VA, there's no TEE, I guess it's pronounced right when it would be written ZASTAWAH, which literally means - the flag, piece of fabric on top of the flagpole, lol. Name itself has to do something with communism, since the red flag is kind of a simbol of that. Red Flag, or "Crvena Zastava" was (and I guess it still is) an arms manufacturing plant in today's Serbia. Car's that were made there are called just "Zastava". There are still many fans of Yugo in former Yugoslav countries. If you need those small parts, I'd find those people on internet forums and fb groups, and arrange something. That stuff is very cheap here. Greetings from Bosnia, and please take a good care of that Yugo!

Ford helped Yugo get in the US by supplying the emissions systems which were easily removed and disguarded. I remember the gas guage didnt work. My second one used an electric fuel pump because the mechanical one was junk. I had acess to parts all day long because I got to be friends with Daves Imparts. In Bosnia nobody will approach you and consider to speak to you in English. Try to get a US gvx model with 1.3 EFI engine and 5 gear transmission train and the driving experience gets even better. Oh there's also the gvplus with automatic transmission and a/c. Just 300 units were built.

If memory serves me correctly Renault sold the 5 badged as the "Le Car" in the US for $4,000 too. Does anyone recall the price of that car?

The mileage wasn't that bad in the mid 80s when this car was made. I had a Cutlas Calais from 1991, IIRC, with the Quad-4 and that had lots of power but still got really good gas mileage on the highway.

Its funny, how different the view on cars is in the US. Aside the build quality and rust issues, this is pretty normal small european car of the 80s, with 55 hp it wasnt in fact slow or weak at all, considering the weight, Fiat Uno basic model had just 45 hp, basic level VW Golf or Opel Kadett of the era had also 55ish hp. Yugo is basically a Fiat 128 from the 70s, with brand new body, so the mechanics were not bad at all, cause Fiat cars were always legendary for driving very well and having amazing engine sound. For european market the biggest problem could be the fuel economy, cause more modern Fiat Uno with fuel injection could drive for around 5,5-6 l/100 km, 2 litres less than this.

To be honest, Skoda wasnt bad either, because it managed to get sold in Canada. I dont know the differences between Canadian and US regulations, I just think that nobody ever tried to import Skoda into US in the 1980s.

"Is low price sufficient for buying the Yugo?" Consumer Reports asked in its review. "We don't think so. Overall, the Yugo scored below every other small car we've tested in recent years."

I really want to get myself one of these but put a more powerful engine in it. Make everybody question my sanity... like they should have been doing all along.

The only thing I dont like about cars such as this one is the simple fact that if I got into a wreck I don't think I would be okay... even the cheapest car now has 10 airbags you should try to fully restore that car.

FUNNY TRUE STORY ABOUT YUGO. I was working at a Toyota dealership back in 1989-90 and we had 2 Yugos left for sale. Actually the dealership couldn't give them away and were begging the salesmen to unload these pieces of shit. They offered to pay us $400 if we sold one and if you sold both, you would make $1000. YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS... ACCIDENT: One sales guy was backing up a Yugo and accidentally caught the front fender on a metal garbage can which actually bent front bumper backwards like a piece of tin. None of us could believe how easy this life-saving piece of equipment the… front bumper… was bent. The front bumper stuck out twelve inches from the side. We all were concerned because bumpers are normally made of steel and you can’t bend them even if you hit it with a mall. Well... we had to fix it and nobody wanted to tell management about the problem (at least not yet) so… the guy who had bent the front bumper started kicking it back in to place with his foot. That’s right he kicked it. After 4 or 5 times, presto… like magic… it was fixed. Much to our surprise, it looked ok and the problem was barely noticeable. Besides at that price and sales commission, pretty soon it was going to be sold. We all couldn't believe it and none of us could stop laughing. Nobody said anything to management. VECHILE FINALLY IS SOLD: One day... the last person on earth that anyone of us ever thought would buy one of these pieces of shit magically showed up. Naturally they were a not so smart couple with a limited budget. What make them unusual was they were a heavy set couple (each around 300lbs). Knowing the history of the car, we all were watching what was going on with a smile. Much to my surprise, they fell in love with the price ($2999) and bought it. We were all laughing at how the Yugo was leaning to the left and stressing to get off the lot. When they finally managed to drive it off the lot and on to the street, the front drive side tire popped like a balloon. Almost all of us were watching and we almost pissed ourselves laughing. Needless to say the couple saw us all laughing and were not happy. Then came back into the dealership pissed off. They told management they had second thoughts (among other thing) and didn’t want the car anymore and wanted to return it. The dealership said that because they had drove it off the lot that the dealership didn’t have to take it back and it was their piece of shit now. LOL... END OF A TRUE STORY. They did offer to fix the tire.
