Being from Talladega Co. you are spot on about the power grid. When I was a growing up in the 80's ,if it was to snow which doesn't happen much in Alabama we would be with out power for al least a week and I'm talking about a light snow. Maybe one to two inches of snow
@Bizz4r2m0ke2 ай бұрын
Yeah but in reality Alabama Power and the Southern Power Co has all the necessary equipment to make it happen. Its just a matter of if Nascar deems it a reasonable necessity to make more money. Personally i think they would make more money if they did a Dega night race. Also id like to add the only reason i know they have the equipment is because im from Tuscaloosa so I've seen half the stuff they let TPD use.

…that’s what property taxes are for. The speedway is rather clearly under taxed by its host county. Power in the US is structured as licensed natural monopolies. One company has exclusive provision for an area, but they can therefore only make profit from infrastructure upgrades (and that’s fixed at 10%). So what ever your power bill is, you’re paying (within 1-2%) the exact production cost of the power you use + how ever much covers any unreturned infrastructure improvement investments. One major flaw in this system is that maintenance doesn’t count for any profit, so power utilities are heavily incentivized to skimp on maintenance as much as legally possible. This tends to drive user costs up, while making the companies little or not profit (except tangentially in corrupt cases where irresponsibly deferred maintenance is used to justify unnecessary infrastructure upgrades). If the local area can’t afford further investments, then it hasn’t been growing enough, which is a super common outcome when services are too underfunded. A massive speedway and it’s equally massive parking footprint eating up space is a great local asset-if that asset pays its share of local tax.

Talladega used to have an infield road course, which can still be seen if you look at a detailed map of the track. But just like Phoenix in 2011, the paving of the infield runoff areas in either 1995 or 1996 sealed off the infield section, making it very difficult to revive that layout. Besides, the 24 Hours of Daytona was run long before the lights were installed, so they wouldn’t be required to run such a race at Talladega.

I think something to add too, Talladega Superspeedway only host NASCAR and no other motorsports. Just Cup, Xfinity, and ARCA and in the Spring, and Cup and Truck running in the Fall with Xfinity running in the Fall in recent years. Even if Talladega had lights it wouldn’t be enough money to pay the electric bill, compared to its sister track Daytona where 98% of racing at Daytona is done on the combined oval and road course. Same can be said with other tracks on the schedule like Michigan, New Hampshire, etc. Michigan only hosts NASCAR, and New Hampshire host only NASCAR and maybe some other motorsports on the combined oval and road course, but not enough to really make bank off of em.

Idk about that I can’t speak for other tracks but Richmond’s lights are controlled by generators exclusively. I’ve seen it myself, every pole has its own caterpillar diesel generator powering it. The big tandem axle ones. I wondered why but the reason in this video makes sense. Also the camera on the wall around the track are each powered by a Honda generator. Now to be fair Richmond is significantly smaller and Talladega so it may be cost prohibiting to have generators powering that many poles and I don’t know how Daytona is set up, the closest thing to talladega, I was always curious as to why Richmond used generators vs being hooked to the grid

Ngl, Talladega should have plenty of space for solar in the parking lot too not only light the track but also the grid. Talk about a win,win upgrade for the facility and county as the track also becomes a big green solar farm while shading the lot for tail gating.
@JnitraM07816 күн бұрын
There are generally 3 separate grids that come from the power plants or different transformers. There's Industrial power, Commercial power and municipal power. Talladega would be on Commercial power at the least with the airport and other things on that property that run. They do have their own substation. So, depending on the voltage coming in to their transformer it might just be a question of larger capacity transformer, larger physical size high tension lines, or come off of a different source altogether which may be industrial if they could get zoning for it. All of which wouldn't cost them much as most of that would be the power companies problem. They would have to upgrade their onsite service, but not the incoming. But, it wouldn't shut your lights off at your house. Maybe the warehouse down the street. I get the point, but there's always a way. How did Pocono do it? There's plenty of room at Talladega for that. I'm not a fan necessarily but in that large of a scale, if solar works and would bring lights to race at night, go for it.
