This is not the only battle. In 1971, Indian S21 submarine went head to head against Pakistan's PNA Ghazi submarine. This incident is very famous too. Edit: PNS ghazi was sunk btw

This is also the birth of what is called "TMA" (Target Motion Analysis) which is used by all submarines when engaging targets using passive sonar to find a target firing solution.

According to Vetehinen crew members, she was on a night patrol searching for Soviet submarines, which stayed underwater during daytime but usually came up during the night to recharge their batteries. A contact was found, and after confirmation of an enemy contact Vetehinen launched a torpedo, which missed probably due to being fired at too short distance. Vetehinen then opened fire with its deck guns. A second torpedo also missed, but the deck guns managed to damage the Soviet submarine which by then had started an emergency dive. The Captain of Vetehinen, determined not to let the submarine escape, ordered his submarine to ram the other vessel which at last was a success - the "teeth" on the bow of the ship ripped open the Soviet submarine's hull and caused it to sink. Vetehinen suffered a minor leak from the impact but managed to return to its home port.[9]

Video is a bit inaccurate; U-864 has not been covered with sand. Only some surounding area has been stabilized, because the Norwegian governement has sill not descided wether to cover the submarine with sand or salvage it

There were many sub to sub battles during the 1980s. But no one talked about it. These were not old slow WW2 subs, but modern attack subs. Both the US and the USSR tried to position nuclear missile subs just off shore of the other side, only to be attacked by attack submarines. More often attack subs would engage in Underwater dog fights. Way too scary.
