In today's video, we are looking at the lesser spotted five cylinder Volvo V40 T5. The C30 T5 is well known as a bit of a performance hatch legend, but the larger V40 only received the Volvo-designed five pot for a very brief period, before switching to a more conventional four.
In the real world, just what is the car like, and why might you go for it over its stablemate the Ford Focus ST?

Im a 22 yo and Ive been driving a manual 2013 V40 t3 since 2018. It wasnt my choice, I was vehemently attempting to convince my dad to look for an A3 or 1 series or the like but he rocked up with this. It grew on me immediately and Ive been chuffed with it ever since. Once it ticked over 100 000km, I asked for it to chipped for my birthday and its an absolute blast. Nothing major just a boost from 110 kW to 125kW but it makes all the difference. I must also concede that I did have a fender bender in it once. But, Volvo being Volvo when the pickup truck collided with my rear fender he accrued 3x the cost in damages, bull bar and all. All that I needed done was a realignment on the afflicted wheel and a good old panel whack for a dent as big as a sheet of paper. Kudos to Volvo.

As an owner of an 05 S40 T5 I can tell you the 5cyl turbo is such a peach of an engine that it alone draws you to the Swedish side, but the handling of the p1 platform is stoicly good; planted yet playful. Such a good car, such a good manufacturer. Go Swedespeed!

Volvo is a brand that appeals to me (currently 19yo) because I feel like they're one of a few car brands that offer more luxury, quirks and interesting design without being pretentious or overrated. People like Volvos for what they are - a brand that lives up to their reputation and hype even in some of their more low end cars, which can't always be said for the German or even British and Italian rivals. I find often when watching reviews such as yours there is a big reason not to buy Alfa's or Jaguars because they always seem to have some sort of inherent flaw. Volvo manage to make cars that are different and often more interesting then rivals from the likes of VW or perhaps even BMW ; yet never really seem to have a flaw. I feel often the greatest criticism against them is due to their FWD or Front-Biased AWD layout, However this isn't a thing that seems to put people off of an A-Class or a new BMW 1 Series and I believe that Volvo make far more understated and attractive cars when placed against those rivals.

Brought a 2012 C30 R Design Polestar version. 184kw 250NM of torque and a 0-100kph in about 6 seconds. The T5 is a magic engine, and just pulls really hard and takes corners like a well designed grand tourer. If I ever replace it I think I will go for a S60 3.0 litre.

Volvo is actually the brand that got me into cars. My dad's old P80 V70 2.0T (facelift 850 essentially) was the family bus and went absolutely everywhere and carried absolutely everything, holidays, furniture, and the dog. All the while having that glorious turbo 5 cylinder sound, which made me fall in love with cars and I've even bought a C30 as my first car. The V70 was plagued by the ever so present throttle body fault and dad had had enough of the old girl breaking down and took her off the road, but she's still waiting out in the yard to be fixed up and that's the plan for this summer!

Loved Volvo since my aunt had one of the original S60 T5s back in the early 2000s. Sounded amazing and went like a rocket. Had 4 myself, one being the rare C30 D5 manual. Had the 2.5 Focus ST afterwards, but wish I'd kept the D5. Much better car, just as quick in the real world, so much cheaper to run and I didn't feel like a chav driving it.

The thing that got me into Volvos is very simple. Gran Turismo 4. Volvo 240. I imagine its appearance with the C30 T5 in Gran Turismo 5 in 2010 helped as well, given how well it sold. I bought my own Volvo 240 at 20 years old, and still have it 6 years later.

I'm 33, I'm leaving the 'young' age bracket but I bought my first Volvo this Summer, a 2013 V40 D2 R Design in rebel blue with black alloys. This is my second car, having had my first for 6 years. I wanted something a bit different and an irregular choice when so many look for a Ford or a Volkswagen Polo or Golf. My parents have been long time owners of several Volvo estates, including a handful for 245's over the years - I've never been in a more comfortable car than those older estates - truly great cars. My dad still can't believe I've become a Volvo owner! In honesty, I've been obsessed over the V40 for months leading up to buying my car, and since owning it my passion for the motor hasn't waned. The rear of the car is just a thing of beauty, it's reminiscent of the C30 but owns enough of its look to be unique. The more modern additions to the V40, including some of the Ford quality of life changes makes me that much more glad I picked a V40 over the C30, it's bliss knowing I don't have to scrap ice of the windscreen anymore! I do wish it had Android Auto; I fitted a third party double din stereo in my previous car and not having that system has been hard , but I'm exploring options to get it added to the V40. As long as there's no surprises ahead, I'll be happy with my Volvo for a very, very long time!

Great video! Unfortunately one aspect of Volvo owners is that they’ll always tell you about their Volvo…and it was asked! I’m 19 and my first car is the ford/stroke Volvo v50. It’s the DrivE model (great running costs…but um…that’s about it!) and not at all a car enthusiast-y car. Completely the antithesis! That being said I wanted to get into Volvos and I quickly discovered that it’s an amazing community. I’m actually a member of the club mentioned in the video and have luckily seen this exact car - it is beautiful. I think at the end of the day anyone can love any car but at least Volvo owners can say they have the comfiest seats. The phrase ‘no one suspects the Volvo’ is so true. There’s a Volvo for everyone, from diesel mile munchers, (very) hot hatches like this V40, SUV’s, estates, modern classics like the 850r, modified, classics…trucks…I mean the list goes on! Unfortunately I’m biased but it’s definitely a cool brand in my eyes and I know in my future there will be many ovlovs to come. Just love this channel too for featuring the best vehicles and reviewing them in such a clear manner. 👍 signing out, a somewhat old young man!

I drive a Volvo for two reasons- firstly I grew up with them so there’s the sentimental side, but also I really don’t like mainstream brands - driving my V70 on the motorway in a sea of financed Germans…. I love the fact that I drive something that not everyone else has. Great video

I have owned an identical v40 but powered by a tweaked 2.0 5cyl D3 engine upped from 152bhp to 204 ish and 373lb/ft. I have owned a 2008 Focus ST prior to the Volvo (I'm a 5cyl obsessive) and have found the Volvo just as quick all the while returning 50+ mpg on a run and around town 38-40mpg avg, we also use it as a tow vehicle and it handles that with great ease having attended the 24h Le Mans with the caravan in June 2023. Thanks for the continued excellent content and keep up the great work. Thanks James!

My first, and current car is a Volvo C30. Sadly it's only a D2, I was really looking for a D5, but I didn't find one to buy, so I made a compromise (free road tax on the D2 was quite attractive too). I'm 25, but I lived in London until 22 and I've always been a bit tight, so I didn't bother getting a driver's license until I moved to Solihull. I was looking at a Volvo V40 or S60 first, but the fact that the C30 is cheaper to buy, cheaper to tax, and has aluminium bodywork (so less rust than usual), meant that I ended up going with a C30 (a 2012, which was the last year of production). I was looking at autotrader the night after passing my test, and found a slightly dodgy used car dealer nearby, in Birmingham, that had a top spec SE LUX C30 in stock, so I went to have a look the next morning. About half an hour after I found the small car lot in some tiny hidden industrial estate, I had bought the car. What can I say, it was a good looking car, that was cheap to tax and insure, with a leather interior (something I "needed") it had bluetooth (among other things, the only options the car doesn't have is the sunroof and BLIS), it seemed mechanically sound (it was/is, the only thing I've done after 3 years and 30k miles, that isn't consumable, is a turbo hose). Nothing rattles, and though the interior is defo dated with the lower dot matrix screen, and the upper TN satnav screen, all the materials (aside from the carpet, which seems to be made of cat furballs) are premium. Can't really ask for more in a first car. I guess that's why I really like my Volvo. It's everything I want, in an attractive package, for not much money. It's also a pretty uncommon car which is nice, though there's another commuter on my way to work with a C30, so I see one almost every day. Seeing as how I've been single since 21, and I always pack light, the C30 had more than enough space for me and my backpack. Though it did fit a set of alloys and winter tyres the other day when I was taking them to the fitters, which is a pretty sizable load. I've fitted a strut brace from a Volvo S40, and I've replaced the pads with ceramic ones from ATE, but that's about it. The strut brace did make quite a difference, you feel more through the steering wheel, and a lot more through the seat, and it slightly reduces bodyroll which is quite pronounced stock with the SE LUX model. I might fit a K bar at the rear, but that also eats into boot space, so who knows. The C30 has quite a bit of negative camber configured stock, so the car can grip pretty well if you hit corners at the right angle. Which is easy, because the car is a breeze to place on the road. The little diesel engine is fast enough, the 6MT is slick to use, and 50 mpg is quite easy. The A pillar issue that you mentioned in the video also exists in the C30, when I'm coming up to a zebra crossing, or a junction at a certain angle, I need to move my head around to look around the pillar.

I’ve got a 5-cyl D4 R-Design and I’m so contempt with the car. The great seats, high perfomance stereo and safety stuff Is so nice to use on the daily commute. But what takes the cake Is that I pay almost half of road tax, insurance and fuel compared to the Mk6 Gti ED35 I owned before. The Golf was fun but It wasn’t worth It for a daily commuter Imo.

Having Replaced a V40 with a Polo GTi my parents commented that it was easier to get into the back of the Polo than the V40. The rear hatch opening did cause an issue when moving flats and getting furniture in it. The V40 was purchased when I was 30 and the Rebel Blue paint did attract me to it. Also the option packs made available meant you could get a lot of toys for your money. Also Volvo’s finance deals, service package and favourable insurance cost were a winner over the A3 and 1Series that I was looking at the same time. I did a review on it as as one of the first videos on my channel!

Leave it stock for crying out loud! Volvo C30 owner here. I love the design. Mine is a very simple 2.0. Very low tech engine. But easy and reliable. And it takes me to the Swedish speed limit perfectly well. I have lusted after one since I first saw them new. Very happy I found a low milage one in decent condition. For being a small car I think it's perfect for me, flip the back seats and it's a pretty roomy cargo space, if the things just fit through the hatch. My regular beach chairs and groceries fits perfect anyways. The odd times we're three people in the car I like the separate and quite comfy rear seats, and the body shape gives plenty of head room compared to the S40.

Another relatively young enthusiast here. I bought a 14 plate V60 D5 a few years ago, great value for the level of luxury, power and reliability vs the big German brands. That car got written off on the motorway when an Audi and a Peugeot had an exchange that resulted in the peug crossing all three lanes and hitting me. The V60 performed admirably and we only sustained minor injuries. Moved right on to a 17 plate V90 D5, an amazing car with more toys than you could shake a stick at. That held it's value tremendously and I've now sold that and ordered a brand new V60 Polestar engineered. Every one of those cars is safe, unassuming, great to drive and a joy to own.

Only negative for me to mention is a big fuel consumption, wich led to her selling the Volvo. Great video! I just bought a V40 T5, upgrading from a C30 T5. Same colour as well! I appreciate the Volvo Brand as it is more distinct and unique to the ton of BMW’s Audi’s and VW’s on the road. Plus you avoid the negative stereotypes that come with those owners. In NZ, for the same coin you can get a Corolla but that’s too soulless for me. Upgraded from the C30 as the KMs are getting up at around 175k now and needing 4 doors for wanting more practicality and a family in a couple years time.

As soon as I saw my first Volvo wagon as a teenager, I had a strange attraction to them. Love the luxury and comfort even as a young teen, and the looks are great. The engines are fantastic, with a great note and reliability. I think a lot of it has to do with image, as they are more unique.

24 yr old owner of a 2007 C30 SE Sport 2.0 (the one with the 18" wheels, 2L duratec engine, R-Design body but without the lower/stiffer R-Design suspension). Not sure how I fell into Volvo's I've always loved the look of the C30 and remember wanting one as my first car when I was only 13 or 14 or so. So saved up and bought one and couldn't be happier with it! Its something a little different, thats sport enough to enjoy on a backroad. Its not the quickest thing in the world at 140 something hp, but I do like the character of the old ford engine, and the steering has enough weight and feedback to make it feel engaging when you want it to be. But my favourite thing is just how nice it is to pootle around in, suspension is a little firm at times but the seats are wonderful, I have a mixed cloth and leather heated options. The climate control is wonderful and on a foggy day its still the quickest car in the family to demist or de-ice. The glass hatch makes rear visibilty pretty decent and just overall its a nice place to be considering its a 100,000+ mile 14 year old car with a fair bit of wear and tear. I hope one day to be able to restore it to a factory fresh condition!

Bought one a few weeks back and I am enjoying it so far. The suspension is as you say, rather firm, but it is a super nice thing to use on a day to day basis. Its just an utterly competent vehicle. Although the fuel economy isn't very good, but its a heavy car with a big(ish) engine, so it is what it is.

@@aljowen Fuel economy is less than stellar yeah. I can still eak out over 30 mpg around town and 40 to 45ish on the motorway, but if you get lead footed that quickly drops. Probably also doesn't help that I believe mine has a small vacuum leak on the intake side reducing efficiency and a slightly worn AC pulley thats probably dragging on the engine a little. But those are fixable and don't stop me enjoying the car!

@@__-fm5qv that is similar(ish) to my experiences with it. I owned until recently, a 2002 V70 T5 manual. I sold it due to fuel and insurance costs (and with ULEZ becoming something I'll need to consider more actively, the old T5 was never going to pass) for a BMW 320i. I was attracted to the volvo mainly because I was in the market for a large car to go on scuba diving trips but I was bored with the 320D I already had (and it was broken). The T5 stuck out to me as the only volvo worth getting, with a legendarily reliable engine that was known to make a fantastical noise and good power, while still being exceptionally comfortable even in town. My only problems with the car was the fabled PCV issue with caused the engine to vomit all of its oil all over my timing belt and drive way, and the electrics. The radio had a mind of its own, the clocks were always playing up and the passengers front door may as well have been welded shut, as nothing worked bar the handles. I never got the chance to modify the car however i LOVED looking at the faces in the mirrors of fiesta STs and other such cars as this big old mans barge - couldnt pass them - but could keep them nervous on the straights.

From what I gather, Volvo's became cool when turbo cars became popular, along with re-maps etc, And made them a desirable sleeper car. I think Ford helped them a bit when they turned the 2.4l 5 pot and put it in the focus ST/RS. That's what I've noticed anyway! Awesome video as always, thanks mate ✌

Back in the 90s i remember seeing the Volvo estates racing the Alfas 155 and so on, back then i didnt really paid much attention to it, as i was a kid, and quite frankly the Alfa was my favorite (my father had one so there was that). I ended up growing up and becoming an Alfa guy myself (still have my 145). I ended up buying my first Volvo almost by accident. I needed a cheap banger that wasnt too thirstly on fuel for my daily commute and found a guy near me selling a 05 S40 2.0d, fitted my budget so i bought it. Ended up enjoying the car quite a lot, it feels solid and safe even with 220k miles, its reliable (4 years of ownership, bought as a banger and still drives fine with only normal maintenance), turns around 48mpg average and doesnt feel slow when it needs to step up, while still being sensible and confortable. I liked it so much that last year i bought another S40, but this time a 2012 D4, 5 cylinder engine although diesel. I was actually looking for a T5, as this was going to be a second car mostly for "fun" but was struggling to find one with the manual gearbox and the right color and equipment, while this D4 had everything i was looking for plus full service history and low miles. Compared to the 2.0d its a lot more "punchy" and the 5 cylinder sound is fantastic, while giving out almost the save MPG average. I just finished a 3500 miles roadtrip in it last Thursday, so i dont regret going with the D4 one bit. Not quite as fast as the T5 obviously but the nearly 50 mpg average is way more sensible if you like doing long trips.

As a 20-year-old from Northern Germany, I have always been surrounded by Volvo cars, thanks to my father's job at the company. We had a S70 and a S80 2.8 when I was younger, and I remember how comfortable they were. However, due to financial constraints, we had to switch to a Mercedes A-Class and then a Toyota Aygo, which we used as our daily driver for many years. We also had a BMW 528i E39 but it was borrowed by my sister most of the time and then sold. In 2016, my father got a leasing deal for a V40 D2, which he later renewed with a V40 T3 in 2019. I fell in love with the car after getting my driver's license a Year Later. When the leasing ended, my father bought a XC60 2.4 AWD, which made me appreciate the V40 T3 even more since I didn't enjoy the way the XC60 drove. Recently, I was on the lookout for my own car and was drawn to the Volvo C30 T5, but it was becoming more rare and twice as expensive in just a year. However, my dad called me one day and told me about a V40 T4 with a manual transmission that was on sale at the dealership he works in. We negotiated the price down from 14k to 10.8k €, and I finally got my first car. I absolutely love it!

I think Volvo slowly became more and more cool starting with the 850-models of the 1990s. They were still typically solid-looking Volvo's (especially the very boxy estate), but slightly more dynamic than their predecessors. My previous car was a C30 with the D2-diesel-engine, I thought and still think it was just the best looking smaller car of its time, with its hint of 1800 ES (the most stylish Volvo of all time for me) at the rear. Felt very solid too, even after a few years. Would have loved to drive it some more years, but costly problems with the engine unfortunately meant that wasn't an option any more. I still miss that car sometimes as it was a perfect fit for me. The V40 never attracted me as much, but in this shade of blue I have to admit it looks very good. And the T5-engine, well, that is something special ...

As a younger fan and S40 owner, I guess I accidentally got drawn to the brand as my dad is a big Volvo fan and when I saw an S40 gen 2, I really wanted one. Looked so unique but her looks aren't what made her unique at her core. It's the sheer silliness being inside a vehicle that's designed for safety but with an inline 5, 6 and a bigass V8 made by Yamaha! Cruising at high speeds and with good handling while sitting in a nice cushy seat and listening to the lovely audio system - you're thrilled but also relaxed. That's what makes Volvo special - it's that rediculousness. Driving something that should not be so fast but it can. That's why they are the perfect sleeper. My S40 is with the 1.6 hdi tho. But honestly for the 109 hp it has, this little diesel engine has given me lots of smiles with it's surprising pulls and actually very nice engine note. It makes a deep burbly sound rather than a more high pitch motor sound like most 4 cylinders. Pretty cool for such a small engine.
