Do you think it's okay for new riders to learn on an AUTOMATIC motorcycle?
@escrow5354
@escrow5354 2 жыл бұрын
I really think it depends on the rider and what their comfort level is with learning to shift. When I was learning on a Rebel 300 with zero previous experience with manual transmissions it was a lot with all the other things being thrown at me all at once. Now that I have more experience, I’ve moved onto a CTX 700 DCT and love just being able to enjoy the ride and focus on my surroundings. The Navi could be the first step to get folks intimidated by shifting into riding.

Yes. Look at how many people learned on and how to only drive automatic cars. IMO we need more shiftless motorcycles
@bert6499

In my view that's a no. Might be best to learn the hard way first with shifting and later on ease up on the shifting on an automatic, not the other way around.

I bought a navi few months ago and I absolutely love it! I am 59 years old and just starting to ride, however I have been a passenger for 11 years with my late husband. I missed the feeling, and the wind and the freedom. In his honour I went and bought this little bike, and I think of my love everytime I ride. ❤️

Reading people complaining its an automatic..... just stop.... learning to ride two wheels is scary enough.... your low visibility to other vehicles... you have to actually use your body to maneuver etc.. learning the basic riding skills is wayyyy better than weather or not you look cool banging gears... its all about comfort and im sure alot of people would love to ride and are just genuinely terrified starting out on bike let alone getting used to a clutch etc... I learned on a scooter how to ride and when I was comfortable enough it was a super easy transition to a real motorcycle ... just saying some of yall need to put your egos aside and see the bigger picture.... riding is riding one matter if you have an automatic or a six speed bike... the roads don't care... as long as you get out and ride thats truly what matters💁‍♂️

I'm recovering from a stroke so sold my two classic Honda bikes a 73 CB450 and a 78 XL125. As I got better I got my balance back bicycling around the neighborhood. Now I've got myself a grasshopper green Navi, love the color and visibility of it and the fact it's an automatic but still has a tank between my legs. Rode home from the dealer in the next town and then rode the country backroads to my job. So when I return to work soon it's going to be perfect and save money over driving my SUV. I'll still use the SUV on rainy days though. It's great that Honda has given us something a little different to choose from and an option for people in situations like mine to keep on riding, I'm 62 and wasn't ready to give up two wheels but my health dictated that I needed to make some changes. It's a great little bike.

I have found that smaller motorcycles are fun to ride. They are easy to handle, and some of them have a torque-to-weight ratio that can give wicked acceleration - especially when pulling away from a standing start. The best motorcycle I ever owned was a Suzuki TC90. I should have kept it. But at the time, I mistakenly thought I was "upgrading" to a larger bike.

This seems to be a great option for an entry level bike. Appreciate it for what it is and have fun. For @ $1807.00 you get a starter bike for mainly around town riding, under 50mph for the most part. And you get well over 100 mpg. Mini bikes and go karts have similar power trains, and people graduated to larger machines with manual gearboxes. If the new Goldwing with the automatic/cvt transmission is good in sales, we may see that as an option on more motorcycles in the near future. Just like in cars where sales of manual transmissions have dropped into the single digit percentile. I prefer manual transmissions, but with the newer generations of more fuel efficient automatic/cvt units may be taking over.

We were looking at Honda adv150 but then this was released and it's so much more my style. Ultimately decided automatic would be for us since we're not bikers and we just want to have an easy time sightseeing..no highways for us needed. I'm short, 5'1'' and think this will be just fine.

I bet 60% of current riders began on dirt bikes but, these things might well be the beginner's bike for the 21st Century riders. I'm not troubled by automatic's for beginners. The more riders the better IMHO. BTW Jess, hope you can make it to Amanda's Rocky Mountain Roll. The best time you'll ever have with fellow moto-campers in what may be North America's most scenic pasture. A long ride from Buckeye-dom for sure. If you make it, be sure to go a bit further north and west to Ride US 12 into Idaho. The greatest ride in North America, without question. All others pale in comparison.

This was a total surprise. I am from India. and I have been a subscriber for a while. I always watched and loved your content to see the big bikes. And me being an Indian Navi owner since 2017 this was a surprise. The only differences are that the rear brake is placed on the handle as a cycle and we Indians didn't get a fuel meter or combi braking. Also, it's discontinued here because of poor sales even though Navi was built first in India.

That is cute little bike and in all honesty it like a scooter in different form factor. I started my street experience on MOPED, 50cc and was not allowed to do over 20 mph on level ground, don't tell it would peg speedo at 35 on level ground , but I think it enforced my love to get a street bike when I was old enough. I think this bike be great step for someone wanting to get used to traffic and riding on the street who have never rode a motorcycle before or if someone looking at one the smaller scooters, this be great option. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, the laws have not caught up to understand electric bicycles. Without a license they are controller limited to 28 MPH or less with plenty of power if they were treated right. The 50 cc limit was an easy way to avoid governors and give a little lee-way.

Seems like a cool little ride for someone starting out. Me personally I don’t like auto bikes, that takes most of the fun and learning out of riding. That’s like teaching a new driver to drive an auto and them having that free hand to play with cellies or radio. Cali looks bootiful. Would rather be there or in Florida riding year round (with Shadetree, Flip and Family) in great weather though. Very nice video sweet lass. Ride on and peace out.

That's a neat looking little bike. Learning on a small bike is a much better idea. Learning on an automatic will, I'm sure, be a topic of debate as long as there are different types of bikes. I think it's ok and you can 'graduate' (?) 'upgrade' (?) to a clutch in advanced classes.

Back in the early 80's, I started on a cm400 Hawk with a 2 speed auto trans. It was a gas to learn on. But size was an issue as I'm 6 ft and 250 lbs at the time. Next was the cb750 k and v65 Magna. The magna scared the snot out of my wife and she didn't like it. After 3 months, we traded it in for a 1984 gl1200 Goldwing. Loved that bike to pieces. Currently have a 86 xvz1300 venture royale in pieces. Looking to rescue it and maybe get another Goldwing in the future. Tried all spring and summer but no one would carry a contract for a used Goldwing so here I sit with no bike that runs.

In the UK, at 16-years old it’s probably the largest portion of new riders as you’re limited to 50cc. At 17 you can go to a 125cc and even then a lot stick with no geared bikes. At 19 you can go to max 395cc and max 47BHP, that’s when most go to geared machines. You have to stay on these small machines for two years, then do another test to get on bigger bikes. Alternatively you can wait till you’re 24 (21 if you did the 2-years on the 47BHP bike already) and go for direct access and you can ride a 595cc / 54BHP for training and test then anything goes.

Interesting thoughts...and, Yes, it's perfectly OK to learn on an automatic, But it will make you want more. I think the scares that new riders will face are balance, confidence and technical stuff. So, without the clutch and gears the new rider can focus more on balance and the riding... Big thanks Jess!!!

I learned on a manual shift 100cc dirtbike starting at age 8. I had 8 years of riding practice by the time I got my license at 16. That was 46 years and over a million miles ago. I have never ridden an automatic motorcycle. I'd rather just quit riding.

Living in Florida😎 where it's pretty flat, I'm looking at the Navi as an around towner machine. With the 100mpg rating, and $1800 sticker, I may just buy one for errands. I had a Yamaha Vino 125, and it was a fun ride with mega storage under the seat....👍😺

I’ve owned a concours and a triumph scrambler. Picked up a Navi and love it. Small, light and easy to work on. Had fun putting a Pollini carb and Yoshi exhaust on it. It transformed the bike. Most importantly it’s fun to ride. We need more riders and less judging. It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow. Plus the motor is bulletproof. It’s not to good for the people of India and Mexico.

Hi jess this is oldhelmet im just using my friends phone i think for us asians its a regular rides for most people here bc america have wider roads but believed me in asia its very useful in traffic bc its a small size . And to make fast the automatic motorcycles is you have to full throttle then release your grip on the throttle then grip it again to full throttle it will reach maybe 100 kph. You can watch thailands drag race automatic scooters. I hope i have answered the question of how to make speed of this little bike. And yes it is fun to ride too with smaller bikes.

I feel like this is the beginner motorcycle for people who can't keep their balance on two wheels. This allows them to focus on just staying upright on two wheels around the city, manual shifting and controlling more horsepower can come later.

It's absolutely a great beginner bike for some people. If you live out where you might be riding on dirt roads or putting a lot of miles on the bike probably not as much but for people in city environments where they'll never get on roads over 45 mph I think it would be great.

I'm on a waiting list for the Navi right now, but your comment about city driving has me evaluating. I want a bike for both pavement and gravel fire roads (going to the lake, exploring foothill back roads). I'm 75, so my danger fantasies are well in the rear view mirror. Just want a fun toy to enjoy the area.

@@richhowell6874 well you said gravel roads correct? I assume you'd want to find some decent tires for that but with that 10 inch rear your gunna be screwed (I haven't checked but I'm fairly confident) on selection. I got a z125 and I went to the grom specs for tires cause the stock choices are horrible. They both have 12 inch wheels but the tires that make the z125 so nimble also are much more expensive than typical 12 inch wheels. Plus having drum brakes and no clutch is a pain when you want precise throttle control. The grom has the new engine and trans now plus it's going to be overall better quality. Don't forget fuel injection vs the carburetor on the navi. This is a beach rental or for someone who isn't a bike person who want very cheap transportation. Trust me, buy once cry once.

@@jaybosher6144 Thanks for the response. I'll give it some thought. Truly, this is just a toy for me, so I was attracted by the $1807 price. The Grom is nearly twice that. But I'll keep your advice in mind.

@@richhowell6874 no problem, the initial price looks very appealing but there's a reason for that. Honestly think about what you want and think about things like consumables or maintaining a carb. W.e bike you get I hope you enjoy. I knew I wanted a mini bike after discovering them online and I've enjoyed them very much without having to rack up speeding tickets in the process lol.

Looks like the Navi would be a decent beginner/city bike. The small size and ease of not needing to shift means you can concentrate on the other aspects of riding ( handling, hazard detection, etc) without being distracted by needing to deal with a transmission you are not comfortable with. You can learn the transmission by itself later. One other comment, however, is that if you are WOT all the time, the bike *is* underpowered for you. I saw you being passed a couple of times while you said you were giving it all it had. That's actually dangerous. A fully automatic motorcycle is an interesting concept, but perhaps the DCT is a better option in this case. If the Navi had a bit more power ( make it a 125cc or a 175cc) I think that might be a better solution.
