Did you know there's a town in England that belongs to Scotland? Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey, travels south to investigate the reasons why and ask the question: 'Does it matter?'

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Would love to see you do a video on the Auld Alliance. Not just an anti English video (although always good to give them a little dig 😀) but focussing on the one sided nature and how it benefited France a lot more than Scotland. As well as the time the Scots bought the French in the Hundred Years War when they were on the cusp of losing the war.

@@tam310 let's talk about Scottish people still thinking they have a monopoly on what is right. You still believe medieval propaganda after the Scottish King James the 6th inherited England when Elizabeth the first died. Technically Scotland has absorbed England as the English Royal line died out. The Royal family is Scottish not English. So the debate is stupid.

@@gammonsandwich1756 Us 'Yorkshire not English' types are alluding to the War of the Roses when we say such things. Those Lancastrian types stole our Crown and they STILL won't let us bury OUR King in Yorkshire. We''ve been trying to get away from them ever since, we even put up a barrier of hills between us but they still come over. I liked Mr Fummey's plan to reposition the Scottish border between the river Dee and the river Humber, but the only drawback is we'd be taking the Lancastrians with us (and nobody wants that). Don't take it too seriously though, twenty or thirty years time I'll be nothing but a memory on Earth. Arguments about nationality start to pale into insignificance when you think about it.

To be honest, Cumbria was one of the very last places to lose its Brythonic language. Only Cornwall was later I believe, and they have now resurrected it somewhat, but it was dead so pronunciation etc may be way off. And of course in Wales it still exists, just about... But don't forget, at one point, before the Anglo Saxon invasion, the whole island would have been speaking dialects of Brythonic. It's only Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria that get any recognition for ever having spoken it, it seems. Which is quite bizarre.

Westminster is not England, London may as well be its own nation, it essentially is in many ways including having its own seperate internal government along with the UK wide one. Most of England doesn't identify with London or Westminster, take London away from England and it's essentially just like a southern Scotland.

My Mum was Scottish, my Dad was English. I live in Scotland. When I drive North across the border (usually near Carlisle) I feel uplifted mainly because the traffic diminishes to nearly nothing! When I drive South my heart is lifted because I am in England which feels far freer than Scotland! Either way, we are one people and long may it stay that way. Love this guy's videos!

Actually if you look at history properly Scotland is largely of viking decent not celtic. This is proven by DNA testing. The vikings were hardly a peace loving people. The problems between Scotland and England were mainly to do with viking settlers and leaders fighting over territory. Scotland and England were as bad as each other in that time. No Kingdom could claim a monopoly on what is right. Old Scottish propaganda says Scotland is fighting for what is right. Many Scots still believe it. Its still propaganda.

Growing up I used to say I hated the English but thinking on it I realised it was a knee jerk reaction much the same as saying I love drinking whisky and love haggis… things I’m supposed to say if I’m Scottish. What a lot of Scots hate is a small section of the English who still believe they have an empire and Scotland is still a part of it. Back in the 80’s we used to say the line was south of the Watford Gap, that’s the dodgy English you had to watch and those North of that line had more in common with Scotland than their English compatriots ( based on purely the anecdotal evidence of a few good nights out in northern English towns for a wee drink over the years ) 😊

That’s because we are closer to the Scottish border than to London. Berwick-upon-Tweed really should be judged as two towns because essentially one is on one side of the de facto border and the other is on the other side of the river in England. If it’s any consolation until a few decades ago the town of Tadcaster in North Yorkshire was half in the west riding and half in the north and east Ridings. Because like many towns on a river with an accessible Ford. It’s spread onto both banks. So I get the predicament.

Your forgetting Bruce, that One man in London has the ear of HM QE2, Since the Balance is all South of the border, it's neither here nor there what Scotland's government say or vote for. The old saying still holds true Who holds the gold, Holds the power. Or until the Balance that has been London heavy IE the monarchy, which has for over 300 years. can be brought into balance then can Scotland make the decision. Anything which England sees as being a threat to the State of the Union despite that when Charles takes over It will be for just 1 hour. Then the 4 nations of the union and the Commonwealth can bend over stick their heads between their legs and kiss it all goodbye. You may think Bruce that it's just the power of the democratic process, however reality is £ ¢ € ¥ $ what controls. If you think your taxation goes directly to government "nooooo" It goes direct to treasury which is a collection of private banks which loan that money to government in order to run the country day to day. that tax you pay goes into a bank account which may be Bank of Scotland or whatever. It is an account "managed" by government but not of government. Nice little scam by the private bankers mate.

But when you look at the way the UK is now run…A Government corrupt to the core… responsible for thousands of avoidable deaths due to mishandling covid…..filling their pockets 💷💶💴💰with their connections to big pharma!…. new repressive Police powers etc etc ….all helped out by New Labour !….this is an abusive relationship that has reached a turning point & now is the time for divorce proceedings. After all ,Independence is for self determination fiscal control & decision making for our benefit & not relying on pocket money from our Westminster neighbours! So I take your point but the landscape has changed so much that an Independence vote now will give us in Scotland the ‘get out’ we sorely need……apologies to the good folks south of the ‘imaginary’ border….but now is our time to lead by example !

Personal comment of Laura Botten: This is why I love your channel! You look at my favourite things of history; the little details that made the world what it is; the individual people who lived and were who they were because of the time in which they lived. DNA doesn't matter to me half as much as the relationships and experiences of the people and what they passed on. Elizabeth was thought to be my 3x great grandmother, but when a cousin shared the family Bible with us, we found that Mary Magill was the mother of the children. She passed when Grandpa Wes was small and his wife and family only knew Elizabeth. Elizabeth was still his mom, Grandma Effie's mother-in-law, grandmother to the children as they grew in Regina, etc. Happy to know of Mary Magill, but Grandma Elizabeth is no less important to the story.
