The Sudd swamp in South Sudan is Africa’s largest freshwater wetland. This unique landscape spreads out from the White Nile and is home to more than 400 bird and 100 mammal species. But the Jonglei Canal, a massive project aiming to divert water downstream to Egypt, could be about to change it forever. Dredging operations began in summer 2022 to reduce flooding around the swamp, much to conservationists’ concern. What impact do they fear the Jonglei Canal might have on the Sudd? And why was such a major construction project left half finished in the first place?

I truly hope you have covered GERD with the same zeal and critical tone. Drawing the entire issue as an overreach of Egypt may be true, but the current Ethiopian government has an equal role in pressuring South Sudan to stop the project. For heaven's sake, cover all sides with your fair share of criticism. Do not forget the richest countries in Earth who are turning a blind eye to the economic destitution of African countries.

@@muethepoe4942 I’m glad that you added more light on this situation. South Sudan 🇸🇸 is a “poor” country by western standards, although we know that Africa, and South Sudan specifically, is a very rich continent and country respectively. Egypt is flexing its muscles against a poorer, less developed country because Ethiopia has threatened to go to war with Egypt 🇪🇬 over the GERD Project, thus Egypt really doesn’t want that smoke - WAR - with Ethiopia 🇪🇹 , so Egypt 🇪🇬 is not trying to bully South Sudan 🇸🇸. My advice to South Sudan: “DO NOT BUILD THAT CANAL BECAUSE IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS YOU WILL REGRET IT!! DO NOT LET EGYPT BULLY YOU!”

More than 2.4 million trees of sub-tropical forests are to be cut down to make an international airport here in Nepal. That doesn’t matter to the rich people that control everything. The only thing that matters is that the trees there can be sold off as valuable lumber, and having the airport located there will increase profits enough to let them buy an 8th vacation house.

@TheAndro5
@TheAndro5 Жыл бұрын
The only thing the canal would do is to cause more of the problems it was build to solve. More flooding but more importantly longer and harsher draughts. The wetlands serve as a water reservoir and supply downstream lands with water when there's little to go by. If you make the water move faster, you'll get more water when there's an abundance of it, so it will cause bigger floods. And there will be none remaining for the dry season.

Shift much of the urban areas to the dry lands and free up the Nile shore back into farmable greenland. This will provide a lot of farm land which egypt really needs like back in ancient times, this will help slow down river flow and soil will hold water better with all that vegetation on the river banks, also some of the Nile water should very slowly be put back into filling under ground water aquifers that are empty or partially empty

The best things Egypt can do is to reduce it birth rate because no one is threatening to take over Egypt, Arab people have history of creating desert where there is no desert.

@luallual905 apparently our Egyptian brothers are claiming that since they’re an Islamic country,birth control is frowned upon by the majority.But to be honest,we will all have to compromise at one point in time.I believe it’s irresponsible of us to blatantly destroy such an impactful natural ecosystem simply because we see it as the easiest solution.

Jabbar I hope the canal gets completed, the people of the Sud can simply farm the land after the outer marshes are drained and farm the lands on the banks of the canal which would benefit South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt with their water & food security I bet you didn't consider the poor majority of South Sudan's people, they have suffered enough

regulating the water flow allowed Egypt to do agriculture and build a civilization. This canal is very beneficial for South Sudan. To the least, it will save the lives of hundreds if not thousands of South Sudanese from the floods. Reply

It is the first climate emission of human development into the Earth's atmosphere. Nature balances itself but when we start consuming natural resources the natural balance becomes unbalanced so that today people all over the earth are facing the effects of climate without directly knowing it. It is the need of the day for all countrymen to unite. This is not yours, not mine, this is the problem of the people of the whole earth. So together we can reduce the impact of climate on nature. Different regions of the world have been collecting and saving a lot of data for many years. When that collected data is transferred, or provided to people. Everyone is convinced that the earth can be made habitable. We all have a responsibility towards our motherland 'Earth'. We all love development and evaluation come with responsibility so that we can responsibly and peacefully develop the areas we have left for development. All of us born in this world need peace and development to move forward. Please help by addressing the comments I made. We all live on earth we need to do and we do it individually, what do we do by ourselves? We all don't think my life has any limits. When I look at the picture of the whole earth there are no lines, no boundaries. We are all born, live, and die here. I think life has no limits we need to live life to the fullest. See a connected world in the open sky without borders. There is no limit here, we make everything here ourselves, so there is no theft, here there is no limit even in the open sky, there is no limit even under the sky. I don't need to get into political issues but everyone has freedom of opinion. In my opinion, I am also free, but it does not mean that there is freedom, the world community has also started talking about borderless politics. When problems begin to arise in the universe, none of the problems are confined to man-made boundaries. So, when trouble starts, it affects everyone who lives between the borders. So there are many problems in the world today. Among those common problems are global water climate change, food shortages, droughts, human life, and wildlife problems in the region. Various countries, organizations, and individuals around the world are ready to reduce the risk to plants, animals, and humans from its effects. We are all doing the same thing for the world, for life, for peace, and for the future. It makes our life meaningful, when we think about the future, peace, and life beyond the limits of what we are, life becomes meaningful and important. A perfect life on earth is important. Losing one in nature is a great loss. It all means, what problems we are facing all over the world today. All these are the result of our system development. Limited resources and their high consumption have led to climate change on our planet. Today, we humans are so evolved that we can imagine a bright and beautiful peaceful future by solving these world problems. I was born in the corner of mother earth at the turn of the century. But I live for the world, for life, for peace, for a bright human future. I am a graduate student in Nepal. I am trying to control and minimize this world's biggest disaster "climate change effect". Currently, there are many problems in our world such as climate change, drought, reduction in production, lack of food, and decline in human health. To solve this problem around us we must try to balance water and air. Today we are trying to mitigate many of the conditions in our world system such as global temperature change, drought, reduction in food production, lack of availability, environmental change, deterioration in public health, etc. We are trying to reduce and control the world's biggest disaster "Climate Change Impact". In an attempt to solve these difficult situations, new solutions have come up. Let's all help to make this work successfully.

Sometimes I wish people would just leave nature alone. When you think about it, it feels like 90% of things humans do to nature do not have to happen! Just leave it. Not everything has to be about power or money or whatever. How about we try just living in the world as it is and finding solutions to our problems that don‘t harm anyone, including wildlife and nature?
