'Stories Behind the Photo' is a new series that we're rolling out where I delve into the context of what's happening in some of my war photos.
My Background: I am a former Special Forces SGM that started my career as an 11B or basic infantryman, and became a Special Forces 18B weapons specialist and served 9 combat rotations overseas. I served as a Sniper, Assaulter, JTAC, TSE expert, Free Fall jumpmaster and more.
I served in 3rd SFG, 10th SFG, USASOC, 19th SFG, and the CIA as a GRS officer protecting Case Officers overseas. I have a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security/Crisis Management and I appreciate you all tuning in!
I own Fieldcraft Survival LLC, in Heber City, Utah where we specialize in teaching civilians to be prepared for the worst case scenario. First Aid, Mindset, Fitness, Tactics, Mobility, and so much more.
Make sure you subscribe and stay tuned to everything we are doing.

The photo in the bottom left corner is James Ochsner. I was a young 82nd airborne infantryman stationed at camp tillman with him. It was a small base with basically two infantry platoons and two SF teams. I went out on a patrol with him and his team shortly before he was killed. He found out I was interested in going to SFAS and spend all of our combined guard shift telling me all about his time in the Q course. He was a phenomenal guy who I will never forget. I was part of the team that went out and recovered the vehicle he was killed in. We all fought a little harder after that day.

Sgt. O was my last squad leader in the 82nd. He was on our squad when he went through SFAS if I remember right. He was one of the best squad leaders I had when I was a team leader in 99'. He was a great guy and had a great family and this was unfortunate. Glad you could be a part of the recovery.

Love it Mike. These stories are apart of our history as a nation, and we need to hear them. Once the people who lived these experiences are gone, so are their stories if they never told them. This is why we must listen to our WW2 vets and hear their stories also. Please keep this up.

I’m a decedent of many heros back to before The Revolution & of it. My uncle who is almost 100 & fighting every step of the way, was in every single war since WWI & many other missions & ops. To admin & my daddy was a marine sharp shooter in Cuba CIA. & another Unvle between the Cold War Era until DEA was a major Admin let’s say. But I would do anything to hear even just a one or two stories to carry on & derive strength I need so badly now from! Please do tell ok? We need them for purpose - really the same reason u lived them - it teaches us.

Yes to more video's like this. My best friend, like a brother to me served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He rarely talks about life over there. Every now and then when we are out fishing, he will volunteer a story. But I never, ever ask. I learned from my uncle Doc, you don't ask about wartime stories. He served in Vietnam, and came home and it took many year's to drink himself to death. But he was truly a good man. Just couldn't deal with the memories.

I've heard this story, but to see the photo and hear you tell it brings a whole new, deeper dimension to it. My dad served in WWII and Korea, and he would "tell" us a few stories, for example he was standing next to his best buddy when his friend got his head blown off or they would give candy to kids. No details...that was all he said. To be fair, we were young kids, he was screwed up really badly, we were estranged by the time I was 15, and he was dead by the time I was 18. Stories like yours, Andy's, Jocko's, et al have given me the tiniest glimpse into what he endured and did (my brother has his medals), and what he dealt with when he came home. I've become a lot more empathetic and a lot less judgmental and bitter toward him, and I owe you all a debt of gratitude for that. I'd love to hear more of your stories and others'. Thanks for all you do and all you've done.

I took loads of photos during my two tours to Iraq in 2004 and 2005. I had them all saved on one of those old, massive, Western Digital external hard drives. It literally fried on me and I lost everything. Plugged it in and a literal *pop* sounded, followed by a hiss, followed by a little puff of smoke. I have a Marine brother, who is into IT, currently working on it, but it's not looking promising. To date, I have only a handful of photos, mostly of what others have taken, proving that I was ever actually there (outside my DD-214 and awards, of course). My Sgt would yell at us for taking photos, he'd say, "You're here to fight a war, not be a tourist!" Today, I tell all of the junior military guys to take as many photos as you can, because when your memory starts to fade, and names and faces become distant memories, it's the photos which bring you back to the things you've done and the places you've been. When you're feeling down and questioning your life choices, it's the photos which can help remind you of who you are. Be a tourist. Cherish the photos you have. Cheers.

JCF, there are numerous data restoration companies that will recover that data. They pull your drive apart, take the media out and put it in a donor drive (exact same, just operating condition) and recover the data. I'm sure it isn't free, but memories, sometimes, cannot be labeled with a price.

Good morning Mike it's Mike from MC Ranch Overland Inc. I have to say how much I respect all the comprehensive information you pass on with your videos and teachings etc. To give people the tools to protect themselves and the people around them and become valuable shepherds in this world. But videos like this one are the most important of all. They make people realize the humanity and the commitment that operators made to the country and the sacrifices they made for the families and themselves. I've only ever been involved in SAR but I'm sure you cannot go into these operational theaters with anything but a single-minded and single purpose at heart. You need to be 100% committed to the task at hand which can absolutely lay waste to your family life and your personal life. Thank you for your service and keeping this world a little safer and continuing to be in the service of others. God bless you from my family to yours, sincerely Mike.

This is a great idea and a great way to share a different segment of humanity. I think of the PBS/Ken Burns style of documentary film making where the narration runs over the picture.
