@@greenmeaniebandits numbers and accolades dont give a clear deduction of what player is better, they dont accurately express the impact of a skillset…theyre all tremendously tarnished by context or the lack there of. I watched Duncans entire career…u guys are overrating him and im sure he wouldnt want this level of a magnifying glass on his career/skillset/abilities because he doesnt need the comparisons/ranking to feel fulfilled. Most ppl are just overrating him to spite Kobe fans because theyre Lebron fans and Lebron fans know deep down that Kobe was a better player than Lebron so this is sort of an illogical trope thats being peddled around as a troll…nobody over the age of 30 thats watched ball since the Jordan era believes this because we all know that Tim was never the best player in the league. Great player…top 15 imo (i have him at 11 just ahead of Shaq) but lets not overrate him and stick him in the middle of a spite game that he doesnt belong in.

You just proved our point. He only Doninated in the early to mid 2000s. After 2007, he was barely a top 10 player in the league. Compare that to someone like Kobe who was considered a top 5 player in the NBA from 2000 up until his achilles injury. Yet most NBA fans have a problem with Kobe being top 5.

@blacknetsmed
@blacknetsmed Жыл бұрын
The argument against Tim Duncan as a Top 5 player All-Time is fairly easy: Tim Duncan has NEVER led a Top 5 Offense in his entire career in the Regular Season or the Postseason. Tim Duncan has NEVER led a strong Offense in the Postseason in his entire career. The strong Playoff Offenses the Spurs had were led Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker; all of the advanced data and metrics bears that out pretty obviously. See 2005 Finals: Duncan 23ppg on 47%TS (-3%rTS adjusted for defensive opponent). Ginobili 20ppg on +12% rTS adjusted for defensive opponent. Duncan despite perception in the Playoffs wasn't an efficient post player to justify an Offense being centered around him. His overall scoring efficiency was extremely dependent on Free Throws which Duncan foul drew at at an historic rate. Duncan historically was a medium volume/medium efficiency scorer who was sub-average perimeter shooter (Duncan's shooting percentage outside 14FT was in the bottom half off the league for his career) while only being a rudimentary passer who was only primarily good at making passes out of structured reads. Duncan's case as a Top 5 player hinges on longevity, not a 8-10 year prime, not a 1-3 year peak, but total career longevity. People who operate with that logic must have John Stockton as a Top 4-Top 5 Point Guard All-Time. Chris Paul must be a Top 4-5 Point Guard All-Time. Isiah Thomas outside of the Top 7 as an All-Time Point Guard. Reggie Miller is also a Top 6 Shooting Guard All-Time also and arguably ahead James Harden.

Missing context and false info on a lot of stuff. Duncan played his prime in the slowest defensive era in history, all the while playing on the slowest paced teams in the league at that time with a defensive minded Coach. False on Duncan relying on FTs his whole career to generate offense. He only avg 8 FTs 4x during his career. Thats less than Kobe Shaq allen Iverson during that era. Also you forgot that Duncan was the reason Manu and tony Parker developed the way that they did. 2005 wasnt a high powered Offensive team in the Finals. It was a lower scoring games during those times. Also his top 5 case is mostly based on his 10 year prime because thats where he did his damage. 1997-2007 21-12-3-2.5 2 MVPs 10x allstar 10x all nba 10x all defense 4x champion 3x FMVP. And he did that from the very start of his career
@blacknetsmed
@blacknetsmed Жыл бұрын
@@Jolteon1989 "False on Duncan relying on FTs..." From the 2001 to 2006 Playoffs Duncan averaged almost 13 FTAs per 100 possessions which ranks in the 99th Percentile historically. His Defensive Adjusted True Shooting during 2001-2006 Playoffs was only +3% against his opponent quality. He was notably reliant on FTs to maintain his overall scoring efficiency. Accolades and achievements are useless arguments to me. Those are media narrative awards. Iverson won an MVP in 2001, was he a Top 3 player in the league that year? Nope. Duncan was not better than Shaq in 2002 either. Gauging Duncan's actual on-court impact is what truly matters and there's too many warts in Duncan's Offensive game that casual fans who don't understand advanced data don't know about.

Duncan era?!? Eh. 2001 Western Conference Playoffs Duncan and the Spurs get swept by average margin of 28 pts where Kobe ran roughshod over the Spurs. 2002 Western Conference Semifinals Duncan and the Spurs get dropped in 5 games where Kobe torched the Spurs in the 4th Quarters of that series. In 2004 West Semis, Duncan and the Spurs lose in 6 games. In 2008 Western Conference Finals Duncan and Spurs lose in 5 games where Kobe torched the Spurs and he sent them home faster than ordinarily should've.
