End gerrymandering. Open primaries. Ranked choice voting. This is the way.

These are the types of people who need to be president. Intelligent, collected, compassionate.

The fact that this guy not even made to D party top 5 candidates, already prove how bad our system. We lack the mechanism to push capable people to lead country. Look what choices we have now, I feel guilty to select anyone on the ballot.

1) Implement ranked choice 2) Make voting an opt out system and make voting day a federal holiday (because are you kidding me why isn't it one) 3) Overturn Citizens United Do literally any one of these and it would fix American politics significantly

I met him in person randomly when he was running for president and I remember telling him "I agree with everything you say but you are just to far ahead of the times for regular folk". I am glad he hasn't given up. He will be known as a visionary.

This last week of TED Talk releases has been amazing. Feels like the old days.

We really need dynamic leadership like this. The government is full of elderly people. The problem I have with that is elderly people reject the idea of any change. With the economic and technological trajectory we are currently on it could be dangerous.

What Andrew descibes is very similar to the Preferential Voting system we have in Australia. This allows minor parties to influence the outcome of an election giving voice to a greater proportion of the populace.

Other key reforms: Zero stock trading for any govt employees while in office Pass laws to prevent ANY politician from working for lobbyists ever after office Same for military leaders and defense industry SCOTUS term limits Dramatic campaign finance reform (zero corporate dollars and even playing field for donors)

The US Founders clearly did not want party politics. George Washington even devoted his farewell address to warn about party politics. Yet, by creating a winner-take-all system, they guaranteed the US would be a 2 party country. Too bad the Founders never had a chance to study game theory.

There is so much frustration with our political system and I pray that it erupts in a way that brings positive change. We all feel stuck right now.

In Nevada we voted up ranked choice, but there was a small trick played on us where we have to vote that in 2 more times before it's enacted.

Lots of people who call Yang a grifter haven't really listened to him speak. That standing ovation after he ended his speech was instantaneous!

PLEASE READ IF YOU LIKE RANKED-CHOICE: I encourage you to do research on STAR voting (score then automatic runoff). The idea is the same, increase third party viability but there are some minor tweaks which make it objectively better than ranked-choice. I'm surprised Yang brought up the 2022 Alaska election because it's a famous example of the center-squeeze effect and the fatal flaw of ranked choice. Basically, if you stacked Begich vs. Peltola and Begich vs. Palin and went through ballot by ballot, Begich would've won both match ups. He did this because he had a broad coalition of 2nd place votes but he got eliminated because he didn't get enough 1st place votes to make it through the first round. He was the candidate which closest represented the most people so in my opinion, that is the candidate who deserves to win. It's happened in multiple other elections as well and it happens frequently enough to where it's an issue. There are other problems as well, it's more complicated (there were miscounts in a California AND New York elections). And it requires the tallying to be centralized (less secure). STAR voting avoids a lot of these issues and it's more intuitive to vote because not only can you can which candidate you prefer, you can say HOW much you prefer them. Everyone wants to get rid of the two party system. There's a lot more I could get into but I hope I at least peaked your interest. TL;DR: I used to be a RCV supporter but after learning about STAR the choice was clear, it's just that less people know about it. Approval is good too.

Just a few states adopting Alaska's system of a Nonpartisan Open Primary system combined with Ranked Choice Voting for the general could significantly enhance how our government serves the people. While there are various ideas to improve our government, changing our voting system is perhaps the most impactful and efficient way to bring about the necessary changes. Fix the incentives and we fix the system.

I disagree with Yang on several issues, but he sure is a great guy and a damn good speaker. He’s absolutely right on a lot of things.

So how do we support these initiatives across the country?

This is a solid step and seems more plausible than some other things which should be addressed (Gerrymandering and max term limits), mainly because those others would never make it into law as congress would do everything in their power to suppress those. Since these ranked voting systems are done by state, congress cant interfere and perhaps once the incentives change, maybe the rest of the dominoes fall. Hopefully this gains popularity and we see initiatives in other states as well

Once again Andrew Yang makes me feel guilty for having unregistered to vote. Since I see in his map my state is potentially going to adapt preference voting, I may actually re-register this year to vote for it.

I've always wished that we had a rank choice voting system. This gave me a smidge of hope.

I've been an independent since I could vote. I find it very frustrating that I'm essentially forced to choose often between two options I don't want. In my state, OR, around a decade ago they made it even harder to vote as an independent. I have so many people say I'm wasting my vote by not joining either party and I refuse to do so. That isn't freedom of choice and to me very unamerican. I have gone unrepresented for nearly 2 decades. It is time all votes matter.

Finally, a smart solution presented to the public instead of the usual blah blah blah...

I'm glad this alternative was presented, Andrew Yang should be one of our candidates, I will say after bringing attention to the alternatives and doing more research, STAR voting should be proposed and enacted as swiftly as possible. The positives do far outweigh the benefits of RCV, though I love the concept to warm up people to consider these possibilities, STAR voting should be the ultimate aim for fixing our 2 party system.
