I'm more shocked Morrigan is considered as bad as Viktor or Anakaris

I played this a ton in the arcade as a kid but never tried Victor. Returning to it on Fightcade as an adult, I gave him a shot, and had a blast! I ran a pair of FT10s with a homie and got it all the way to round 3 of the very last match each time, but couldn't clutch it out. I'll take a pair of 9-10s but I think this explains part of why I had to work a little extra hard to make it (besides just decades of not playing).

Okay, until this video i though Victor's whiffed 360 animation was a taunt. It sounds goofy, but I've also seen it whiff in front of me. So I never imagined it was a grab attempt.

Long time Victor main here, you really did your research! He def has to work hard, but he's far from unplayable. He's got some undeniably great benefits, like absurdly high health and a looping vortex. Really great and high rewarding anti airs are an amazing tool in a game where everyone jumps like a jack rabbit on a hot plate. The bad mobility isn't the biggest nail in the coffin in my opinion, id say its his laggy buttons. He's got a fair amount of footies buttons that look good on paper but they have so much recovery. He should in theory be able to just box people out but its just too risky a lot of the time. That and his fat ass hurtbox, that murders him in certain matchups. For instance the Bulleta "Sako infinite" only works on standing characters mostly, unless your name is Victor or Bishamon where it just works all the time. Or Q-Bee dash MP is a really good advancing poke thats +4 on block, but it's supposed to whiff on crouchers, but again vic gets shafted and has to hold that all day. I don't really know what im trying to say, i guess that he's definitely one of the worst characters, but not unplayable for sure. That being said I am well known for up-selling low tiers constantly so take that with a grain of salt lmao.

Hoping that Capcom of all people will make a grappler good in the future is the truest form of folly.

Darkstalkers. AHHH memories. A fun game but VERY CLEARLY made in the era between 'experimenting with ideas' and 'actually forming general standards for most character archetypes'. Victor is victim of a lot of old FG problems taht modern games have mostly started fixing. Any or all 'big body traits' modern-era 2d fighters possess would save him from the bottom tier easily.. Just imagine Victor with super armor, better normals, hard knockdown on his grapples, any or all of the tools guys like Hugo, Alex and/or Gief have. He might never reach the coveted and infamous High Tiers but he could be a good big body fighter instead of what he is now. I still like Victor of course, but MAN what a modern update could do for him....

Best part of Spooky season is seeing the fgc give Darkstalkers its well deserved recognition every year!

I remember somewhat playing once darkstalkers arcade when I was little (funny thing is that is very uncommom where I live where most arcades were Kof and sf) it was this big blue fella the first fighting game character I ever liked. And even though its not always that I go for the grappler archetype, big bodies and gentle giants always have a soft spot in FGs for me

Wow true story. When I was in the arcades I tried just about every character in Darkstalkers and I got my ass kicked to the point I was wearing it like a hat. Like I couldn't get past the first opponent level of bad. Then I came to Victor and holy hell he hits like a dump truck! That jumping downward lighting fist is SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD! Especially against those projectile spamming characters like Morrigan! Sure he's a big clunky doofus but he's been my go to ever since!

Victor Apologist #4 signing in, sir! I don't really know why I gravitated toward him; I guess I just like low tier charge characters (I'm a Remy main too btw). One thing ol' Vic has over most of the cast is an awesome action figure. The Darkstalkers 3 line from ToyBiz is kinda wack, but Victor's figure is superb!

As a grab conneisseur like yourself, I love me some grappler, but it's crazy how even the character who doesn't have a NORMAL THROW AND PUSHBLOCK is not as bad as victor. Vsav is a great (janky) game, but godayum the characters are so nasty in different degrees

Few things: 1. The corner strike/throw is even worse than indicated in the video, because you can OS the strike/throw mixup simply by attempting to push block (you'll get a jab that hits him out of the empty jump throw). So, in addition to running the strike/throw, you also have to subtly alter the timing of your jump-ins to combat a simple OS that people might not even realize that they're doing. 2. Having an invincible reversal in this game doesn't matter, because you can't piano reversal. The engine is programmed so that if you, say, try a reversal DP, and hit the punch button before the reversal frame, it also throws out the motion data, too. So, you can't game the chances of getting a reversal like you can in other older games - it's always a 1/60 (or in this case, 1/59) chance. This is why you rarely see wakeup DPs in high-level play, but see Guard Cancels much more frequently (which are given invuln frames, even if the move normally doesn't have any). ...Also, for what it's worth, "Mega Fist" does have lower body invuln on startup, and "Hammerfall" has upper-body invuln. Not that it's super-important though, lol. Good video!

Anakaris does not have push block because of balancing reasons. He is the only one in the roster who can grab you from afar, his coffin drops are unblockable if you block low, he is the only one capable of teleporting to the other side of the screen, most of his ex moves are also unblockable, and he is the only one capable of aerial pressure and continuous combo in the air due to his float jump which even huitzil, a fellow floater, cannot do. So granting him pushblock just makes it harder for opponents to punish him

I'd love to know more about what makes Morrigan so bad. Her weaknesses aren't as obvious as the other two.

There's actually even more; his non command grabs can be tech'd. Also one of his command grabs can be tech'd, (fireball motion) which isn't just useless, but it means messing up your giga burn or even 360 can result in a slow, useless move that you will get punished for. He has no real way to deal with instant overheads, making some matchups like Q-Bee far worse than they would be with just his flawed offensive options. His charging moves are risky to use and will often get you punished more often than it will work. His little "hop" forward move is almost as slow as his jump and you can't attack or block from it. Don't get me wrong, I love this character, but it is an uphill battle and you have to be able to pull off very insane things to win.

I'm glad you started out by pointing to his shitty dash. Fixing that alone would make the character much more competitive against the rest of the cast. Too bad, because he's super fun to play with what little he has as is, but he's lacking in so many aspects. Raptor in paticular seems unwinnable for him and that character is played by almost everyone.

vsav is one of the coolest games ever but having some of the weaker character be your favs in it is kinda saddening tbh, Vic wasn't the main ones I liked it was more the succubi and jedah who at least got to be good in mvc but trying to play them against some of the really busted characters like Sasquatch was brutal

Don't forget the part where the DP spamming defensive character, the beefy rushdown character, and the pixie character are all better grapplers than him

You say that you hope Victor will get some love, but Gief has released in a buggy, half-finished state, and even after getting patched he's a bad character. Which would be an improvement for Victor since he's CS Tager bad in the game he's in, but I wouldn't hold out hope for Capcom to make a good grappler
