When you unearth the best sounding pressings, nothing sounds better (except reel-to-reel or sitting in the studio with the band). If you always hear surface noise, then it is because of one or more of the following: -- The record is not good. There is no fix to this. Buy another copy, and cross your fingers for better results. -- Record needs a cleaning, even if it looks clean. -- Your stylus is not accurately navigating the record's grooves. The last item on the above list if often overlooked. It is sort of like having your car's tires rubbing against the curb, or being out of alignment and you feel the car pulling to one side, or the steering wheel vibrates. This is going on for many people's turntables, and they do not hear it. But if they fixed the alignment issues, it would be like a breath of fresh air. You would need to set: -- the effective length of the tone-arm -- the cartridge's weight -- the vertical tracking alignment / rake angle -- the anti-skating -- the overhang -- the offset -- the zenith angle -- the cartridge's azimuth. Depending on your tonearm, not all of the above are adjustable. But when you dial everything in that can be dialed in, you will kick yourself for not doing so sooner.

I just subbed your channel. I have got many records that are not available on CD, dating back to 1948 when Columbia introduced microgroove long playing records to the general public. I am an old geezer, but the records are very precious to me.

Hi, I just found this channel and have enjoyed the first couple videos I've watched. Is that a cemetery in your background? I disagree with you regarding old tech. I like keeping it around for backward compatibility and nostalgia. That's just personal preference. You do you. I agree with the reasons you gave for vinyl. But, as you might have guessed, nostalgia is a big factor for me as well. The world has changed a lot since I grew up, in the 70's and 80's. I find that vinyl takes me back, which is comforting. Your explanations are solid reasons to listen to vinyl, but because of the compression, the high and low, may I add my own opinion? Most digital media is compressed. That's a matter of fact. Due to the compression, there is loss throughout the audio spectrum with digital media, especially on the high and low ends. Unlike digital media, LPs enjoy the fullest range. Here's a true story: Decades ago, I purchased the Telarc 1812 Overture LP. It had real cannon fire in the recording. As CDs were becoming more popular, I retired this LP. More recently, as LPs began their resurgence, I decided to purchase a decent turntable, a Fluance RT85. I wanted to compare the CD to my older LP, so I played the CD first, and It sounded as I had always remembered. I then played-back the LP. To my surprise, when the cannon fire occurred, I blew two speakers. That, everybody, is a true story. And this is why - I believe - there is a difference between LPs and digital media.

Owning a vinyl record also create a memory. You rememeber the first album you bought on vinyl. I don't remember what was the first digital file I downloaded though. What was you first vinyl record? Mine was "I love to Love - Tina Charles" sorry I am a disco fan. But I remember how hard it was for me to buy this record as I had to do errands to my mom for .25¢ each and you know what? I still have it since 1976. But I agree with the fact that digital is very convinient and practical in term of carring around the music we love. We cannot do that with a turntable obviously. But at home, vinyl is the king.

To me, there is something special about listening to vinyl on a record player. I grew up back in the 70's, and that was the time when my interest in music started and vinyl records were the thing to buy. Back in the 80's, I was impressed with the CD technology, and moved into it. No more pops, hisses or wows to listen to. Things were almost perfect. Then came the MP3's, WAV's and FLAC's, which I have adapted myself into. But there was something missing... I bought a new, high-quality record player with an excellent cartridge, and started to buy some of the same vinyl records that I have given away (with regret) many years ago. Some of the records that I have bought again sound bad, while others have very good quality. I really don't know why I did that, because the digital audio quality of a 24-bit/48 kHz recording with a great D/A converter is far more superior than the best vinyl record quality available. I guess that much of the hype about going back to vinyl records has more to do with nostalgia than sound quality. Digital technology is great, but can be boring sometimes. The older you get, the more you get attracted to the things from the past. At 58, I miss the vinyl and record players. My guess is that many people around my age feel the same and are returning to it. The younger generation might be curious about vinyl and record players, and might be therefore buying them. These could be the reasons why we have seen a surge in interest for vinyl in the last few years. The truth is: I really don't see the interest in vinyl lasting for too long. The old generation will be gone with time, and the new generation will prefer higher sound quality and ease of use.

I listen to Vinyl records, cassettes and CDs almost equally. I just prefer hard copies over streaming and always will.

Some people insist that vinyl records sound the best. Not the most accurate; that’s for well-mastered digital recordings. But as an analog medium, everything you do to the signal and every piece of equipment the signal passes through colors the sound in its own special way. That’s why some people prefer the sound of it, I think. Another reason it tends to sound better is the mastering. Vinyl has a somewhat restrictive dynamic range compared to digital audio, so you can’t get away with crushing the envelope and amplifying it to just below clipping. You have to master the recording carefully, and the result tends to be better as long as the engineer knows what they’re doing. Though sometimes you do get the “my first record” mastering where it sounds like they hooked up a CD player directly to a cutting needle and let it rip. RIAA curve? What’s that? Why does it sound so muffled and bassy?

The good thing about vinyl is you can roll a joint on an album cover, much harder on a cd cover. Downside is I'm clumsy (due to joints), and my small vinyl collection has taken a hammering. I totally agree about owning your music though, I'd rather buy cds and rip, though i do stream Tidal when I'm out and about.

Excellent points. I would also like to add the inherent value of a well cared for collection. Whats the value of digital files? I know a nice clean original press of Kind of Blue would be worth some money if the need to let go ever arose. Not bad for an "out dated" format which is still standing the test of time. It may not be an investment in the classic sense but it is another reason why vinyl for me.

Well, I switched to vinyl 7 years ago because I preferred what I heard to the digital media I had been using up until then. I only play digital when I don't have the album on vinyl. I'm not that affected by the artwork, and listening was deliberate even when I was using digital playback. After the switch, I've not upgraded any system components. For the first time, I am happy where I am even though I've listened to better (and considerably more expensive) set ups. Admittedly, I upgrade the vinyl to earlier pressings or cleaner copies where possible. I've never really understood what people mean by 'warmth' but I hear a 'fuller' sound on vinyl, especially for my staple of 70s/80s rock (clicks and pops are less of a problem for this genre). I'm not proposing that vinyl is superior, but I suspect that not all information is present on digital playback for the mass market. The media is only as good as the material it is presenting.

don't understand this resurgence in vinyl. it never got better than cd. cds are superior in every way. forget the analog superiority over analog. its all academic. in the mind of the listener. no need for duplication as cds can be played anywhere vs the need to record the lp on ipod or tape or whatever for portability. space saving is a no brainer. think storage for 1000 cds vs 1000 lps. no degradation or playback wear in cds vs vinyl. laser vs needle. the list goes on and on. somehow lp enthusiasts haveconvinced themselves its a necessary ritual to listen to vinyl,and have no issues with 30 dollar vinyl reissues and storing 1000 plus lps.
