In this video I analyse and discuss princess Vivi of Alabasta and her role in the story of one piece. In one piece vivi is a great example of political writing done right. Vivi not only has a very interesting character arc where she tries to save alabasta rom Crocodile, one of the seven warlords of the sea, but she also has the necessary traits to become a great leader. In one piece alabasta is the first arc that introduces politics into the manga and thus expands the one piece world immensely. Through Vivi one piece has been able to distinguish itself from other shonen manga in the long run, by making political plot a fundamental part of eiichiro oda s writing.

i disagree...by not having vivi join 1. it gives the crew royalty ties which is needed in the political climate of this world for the future 2. it gave robin joining more importance and impact imo cause at first its so sudden that its weird and she may have saved luffy but the crew did not know that so they were not trusting of her 100% but without vivi we all wanted a new crewmate who was female and robin worked well 3. it gave us that feeling of loss and wanting her which is unique and great as well...

I actually love one piece more than others because of the political plot. It is just so mysterious: relationship of shanks and government, void century, secret of nobles , ancient weapons , the true heir to the throne, the origin of devil fruit and why government is trying hard to stop pirates from finding one piece instead of protecting citizens from pirates

It's great cause you can enjoy One Piece for it's simpler aspects, like the fights, or the more nuanced and underlying plots. And nearly everyone is moved by the emotions behind it all too. So many secrets left to undercover

Vivi's decision to not officially join the Straw Hats not only represents her character as a leader, but it also demonstrates how her dream was always to save Alabasta. Given how the unspoken rule of being a Straw Hat is having a dream, the reason for Vivi's prudent choice is crystal clear. That said, Vivi did beg the Straw Hats to promise to take her with them if they meet again. Their promise had to be silent, but it was effective. However, with above fact in mind, the interlude between Acts 2 and 3 of the Wano arc indirectly hint at Vivi rejoining the Straw Hats soon. Not only does the story state that Alabasta has gotten into disarray again, but it's implied Morgans spinned the newspaper to say that Sabo killed someone (note how the Revolutionaries seem more disappointed than mournful, with Iva saying "This is _Sabo_ we're talking about!"), but a World Government agent tried to bribe Morgans, implying Sabo got away, which would make the World Government look weak because they failed to apprehend a member of the Revolutionary Army. Also, Sabo mentioned near the end of the Dressrosa Arc that he possessed Luffy's Vivre Card; couple this with the implication that Vivi escaped the Levely with Sabo (along with Rebecca if their familiarity is anything to go by) and you have the recipe for Sabo and Vivi unintentionally entering Wano and meeting up with the Straw Hats. When Vivi meets up with the Straw Hats again, she will not only state the situation in Alabasta, but also remind them of their promise (the second half of the crew won't know it, but the first half will remember).

vivi was a red hearing...robin was the real strawhat..oda wanted something different then the generic likeable girl joins the crew nah he wanted the evil one ... and boy did he play the long game with her back then and then deliver making her more likeable then vivi somehow ..he showed his writing chaps..it would of been lame and easy to make vivi a strawhat..you have to be a little bit tougher and have a sadder past to join this crew if your female

I like your interpretation of Morgan spinning things to say Sabo killed someone (I am tempted to say it was Cobra, Vivi's father). Sabo suddenly appearing in Wano (not sure about Vivi though. I think Oda has something worse in mind for her, like, for instance, being accused of trying to kill her father to take the throne already and being sentenced to death by the World Government, thus forcing Luffy to go for her aid on the next arc) searching for Luffy would be an interesting way to bring him back, reveal he didn't die (like many fear, myself included) and hype us up by ending the chapter with him, with a very serious face, saying something along the lines of "Luffy, there is something I need to tell you". It seems just like Oda to do something like that.

Since Morgans already knows about the Reverie death, which is likely Cobra, given the fact that the World Government see the Nefertari family as traitors, due to their refusal to become Celestial Dragons, and his intent to march into the Room of Authority and starting asking the Five Elder Stars about Void Century stuff that he shouldn’t, and the failed assassination attempt, which I feel like has to be Vivi instead of someone like Kuma, because she was clearly Imu’s choice as the next “light” to erase from history, I have a feeling Wapol’s about to reveal that she was a Straw Hat when they were on Drum Island, which will earn her a bounty and force her to either flee as a fugitive or be captured, with the Straw Hats and maybe even the Dressrosa crew, who have been suspiciously M.I.A. since we last saw them at the Reverie, having to rescue her, leading to her rejoining them. But I almost feel like it’s too early to be storming New Marineford or Mariejois just yet. That seems like final Arc stuff and we haven’t even been to Elbaf and Laugh Tale yet. Either way, I think she’s coming back somehow, and will be how the Alliance finally learns of Imu and the Great Cleansing.

At first I really thought One Piece is just your typical shounen anime filled with adventure and character development along the way but upon the introduction of alabasta arc, vivi and robin (poneglyph), that was really a turning point and I found depth in the story which made more interesting, there's really more to it and it is really well written.

Oda has made the only anime with worldbuilding on the level of the legends like LOTR, Star Wars, etc. It's the best part of the show. From the political situation, to the different islands and the nature of the geomagnetism, to the Devil Fruits, to the different races and cultures. It's a legendary show way beyond just the likeable protagonist. The nature of what it means to be Pirate King and why Luffy fights for it so hard. It's admirable. I'm already working on a fanfic, because I like it so much. Just to explore the stuff that couldn't be included in the show because we follow the journey of the Straw Hat Pirates.

I agree with this especially on alabasta part but as the story progress, you understand and appreciate more the prior arcs like Arlong Park after watching Fishman Island, Baratie Arc after Whole Cake Island and etc. It's like a god level story telling which you can't help but admire every episode or chapter because you might miss even a little bit of detail.

Misty for me. I didn't ever see one piece until 2010 the first time. I didn't actually get into the series until 2015 though. I can't even imagine how impactful one piece would have been to me as kid. Probably none considering I'd be watching the 4kids dub.

I’d also say that the lesson came into play on Sabaody, where he KNEW they were outmatched against the Pacifistas and the only option was to run, before Kuma stepped in and poofed them all to their perfect level grinding destinations before Marineford and the time skip kicked in.

she also isnt different from the other 2 women on the team imo. neither of them are brawlers, both of them are smart. vivi being an aristocrat in a world of pirates means nothing. the only way it would be better if she joined if One peice as a manga jumped and got more adult and hence more political. but even then for a team of mostly fighters would be useless in a true political battle. not to mention alabasta opens up pluton/ponoglyphs, which has been the life of nico robin .

i think politics in fiction is more fascinating because the protagonist is actually able to do something against it ... if you think about it: what could you personally do against the obvious coruption in our political system? fiction is different in that regard

@@McNojo exactly dude. i usually think what a shame our world and his innexistense of some kind of "power" to deal with. i mean, there are, and our whole history change constantly with time, individual acts, fenomens, etc. is not the same, but you know what im about. And in opiece i feel more real when you watch the power of the top, of the world goverment with his knowledge and handling of history, and groups like the revolutionaries, who are really powerfull but even not enought. in a certain way, the relationship of fiction politcs with ours, is that we can take consciousness. ideals in fights or situations, knowledge, etc

Vivi's lesson comes through in Amazon lily, noticeably when luffy bows to thank Hancock for undoing the pretrification. More so than on Jaya, since nobody's life was on the line. Another great breakdown, I've seen alabasta so many times I hadn't mentally noted that Vivi's appearance is the first time the WG's influence is introduced. Generally Oda always reveals more of the scope of the story after each Saga. So when people hype up 956-957, for me the impact (given what's known at the time) is the same as after syrup village when Navy HQ (+Dragon) is first shown. Or after alabasta (inbetween jaya-skypeia) where most of the world powers are introduced i.e gorosei, sengoku, some more warlords, Whitebeard & Shanks. So I can't wait for what happens after Wano. Law next plsss: his character arc reflects a few straw hats (1) his reintroduction on the winter side of punk hazard in a science centric arc (chopper & drum island) (2) government cover up & propoganda regarding flevance (Robin & Ohara) (3) his years of struggle to take down doffy, being outwitted in the end & accepting Luffy's helping to finish what he started (nami vs arlong).

You made me remember why Vivi is my favorite character. For everything that happened in the Reverie I think that together with the straw hats, they will destroy the world government and she will become the queen of the world.

I never look at it this way. I previously don't really like Vivi maybe because her character pre timeskip is too mature for the crew that are a bit goofy at that point of time. Now I kinda get it why she was introduced. This video somewhat changes my perspective. Good video.

Thank you so much for a video of a character who’s deserve waaaay more attention but also is very important for myself. Vivi is my favorite character in all of One Piece. Even if I understand her motivation to stay at the kingdom, I was so frustrated that she was gone. And I know I will make me enemies with this but to see we get Robin as replacement makes me so upset that I dislike Tobin since the beginning and can’t stand her until now. Vivi is such a warm character with her own relatable problem (i know non of us is a princess but still) she add such much heart to the strawhats and she is a great addition to Nami as her only female friend at this point. I can’t see a real friendship between Nami and Robin until now. Many people love One Piece because of Luffys great Journey but I would like to see more of Vivi’s but…. It seem we don’t will get it.

Hmmm... It's funny but OP does their politics much more efficiently than even HxH in my view. Reason being is that Oda makes the cast affect the world on multiple levels while HxH only focuses on the personal politics of the characters. There's strength to each one but world building is far greater in OP because they focus on so many levels.

One piece is my favorite Anime right after Hxh but I find it really hard to compare which one is more efficient in doing their politics. I really like the one piece world building, but efficiency means comparing the world to the amount of chapters and the focus of each chapter. Hxh has some really good world building arcs starting at the chimera ant arc imo. Especially the hunter election arc is a brilliant display of how the political system work and I love the subtle references of how democracy can be abused. In this regard, I enjoy both serious really much and I wouldn't put politics of hxh below politics in One piece

People forget that Vivi is indeed part of the crew. She was just dropped off early. Just like Crocus stayed behind with Laboon. Or how Brooke wont make it to Raftel since he will stay with Laboon. Transitional crew member are still members of said crew. It's why she follows their story around. Just because she cant sail with them physically doesn't mean she isn't sailing with them in spirit.

I really hope that the events on the reverie are actually leading to her rejoining the crew. She is the one character(besides Robin of course) that NEEDS to go to Raftel, and learn the history of the world. Learning what her ancestor did, and the truth behind the WG will definitely lead to another major character development

Yeah, the Nefertari Monarch during the Void Century sounds interesting. One the one hand, they were one of the 20 who founded the WG, but on the other hand, they not only chose to remain in Alabasta, but they had a Poneglyph talking about Pluton (and the Poneglyphs are typically with the allies of Joy Boy and the Ancient Kingdom), so maybe there was an allegiance change during the war on the Nefertari family's part? I'd definitely like Vivi to be there to learn what went down with her ancestor.

Hey, *Ohara.* Nice video once again. Vivi is one of the characters in One Piece that threw me a bombardment of revelations when the Straw Hats arrived at Whiskey Peak. I was like 😨 and the situation in Alabasta was terrible to a crazy scale. I accepted why she chose to stay and help her people instead of continuing the adventures with Luffy and the Straw Hats. I actually this Vivi's arc is a natural progression of politics in One Piece, one that really starts with Nami's story. What happens to her village is the first evidence that the government in One Piece is either corrupt or ineffectual. Think about it, for her village to be ruled by Arlong for as long as it was, that's not about just one corrupt marine willing to be bribed, but about a system that is so useless and that tolerates certain pirates, that the villagers never even consider trying to bring in the marines to help them. Vivi and Alabasta just take things a step further when the audience and the Straw Hats realize that the world government doesn't care about any of the islands/kingdoms it supposedly protects. It only cares about its hidden agenda, whatever that is. (I have my theories, but that's for another time.) I mean, this is a government that turns a blind eye to what Crocodile is doing because he's a warlord, and they only imprison him when they have no choice because his crimes have been made public. Anyway, great analysis of Vivi and her importance to the story. I firmly believe that while she will never completely join the crew on their travels, that she will be an important figure in their future again.

like vivi, theres a lot characters very relationed with this kinds of things and parallels with reality either is the same way in op as here, or in an utopic way. and always we meen it with all his context, history, consecuences, reasons, all. one of the better things one piece handle. fabulous video!!

That a great video! I really enjoyed the whole thing. Have you ever did a video on why the royal family of alabaste is considered traitors, The reason why I asked I found it werid that we were introduce to the 5 elder star (anime only) before the admirals or fleet admiral, also I believe that crocodile was send to recovery pluton for the WG.

That is why i'm against the idea of Vivi re-joining the crew, she's such a great leader and a political character, i'd rather see her in op politics than her character being wasted in the pirate world, especially when politics play a big role in op.

Oda proved with the Reverie that he isn't willing to write more than 2 chapters spending time on anything but Luffy unless it is a flashback. He will never give us a full and decent story arc about the main princess character, the marine protagonist character or even the revolutionary army brother. If Luffy isn't directly involved, it will just be a bunch of people chatting about Luffy. So unless Vivi rejoins the crew, she will basically never be seen again for the rest of the manga. So functionally you are saying you hate the idea of her ever being a character in the story again beyond a minor cameo talking about Luffy.

While I do agree with you, a temporary re-joining while on the run wouldn't be something you'd see me complain about. Maybe an arc or two like the good ol' days before she has to go back to being strictly a political character?

Like hobogoblin said, either she rejoins the crew or she'll become a damsel in distress, because Oda will definitely not spent an entire arc focusing on her alone, dealing with the WG hunting her. Plus she is the only character left with enough development to join the crew, and theres a ton of foreshadowing that the crew will have 10 members(not including Luffy)

I am 99% sure that this is where the story is going. We, together with the revolutionaries maybe, will create a system that's close to a utopia but not quite there. Because a utopia is an impossible achievement. But it will still be better than what the world of OP has now.
