I literally teared up whenever I heard Neelix describe the horror of Rinax and that little girl who reached out to him. This episode is criminally underrated!

That scene is incredibly powerfully written and performed. I love this episode.

This is why when people say they hate Neelix I have to keep from launching into a lecture about why they are wrong. In the Raven when Seven tells Neelix that his species made good borg drones he barely responds. He doesn't have any hatred left for her.

I remember watching this back in the day and couldn't stop thinking of Robert Oppenheimer. I wondered if he ever had a face to face meeting like this and if he did, how did he react, how did the other person react. I'll never know. Coming back to the episode itself, certainly one of the best.

I doubt it, though if he did, he'd probably be in agreement that the use of nuclear weapons was wrong. Sadly, he died at the height of the Cold War, right when the American nuclear arsenal was at its peak and a few short years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. He left this world thinking he'd doomed it. He never got to see as his work prevented World War 3 and saved tens, if not hundreds, of millions of lives and as both America and Russia reduced their stockpiles from the mid tens of thousands to the low thousands in as quick a fashion as they built them. EDIT: If you want an idea of what his reaction might've been, look up the famous interview where he said his famous "I am death, the destroyer of worlds" line. He was a broken man without ever having to see one of the victims of nuclear weapons.

I never like Neelix, so because of that I had forgotten how good this episode is. The dialog, acting and story are all fantastic

How this only has 54 views I don’t know; a cracking review of Jetrel, one of my favourite episodes of Season 1, and immensely well done. Thank you for sharing 👍🏻

Now this is a great episode Edit: im saying this because i disagreed so strongly with you on Ent:Dear Doctor Also this reminds me of one of my favorite DS9 episodes, Duet. Where the Cardassian file clerk says hes the war criminal Gul DarHeel because he feels so guilty about the war

Neelix "Did you ever think that maybe your wife was right? That you had become a monster" Jetrel "Yes. The day we tested the cascade when I saw that blinding light, brighter than a thousand suns. I knew at that moment, exactly what I had become" James Sloyan never misses. The Defector is my favourite TNG episode, and Jetrel is easily top 5 for Voyager IMO. This episode is a piece of art.

@@CompletingTheShelf It's just a perfectly balanced episode. Great mixture of top tier acting, drama, political intrigue, action, and a killer soundtrack. Rocks and Shoals is my #1 DS9 ep for many of the same reasons.

Excellent episode. It was on air last night and Neelix's recount of the little girl was so moving, so heart breaking I had to come looking for it. Thanks for sharing!

Great video! Small detail but it wasn't millions that were killed by the metreon cascade but "hundreds of thousands" according to what Neelix said in S7-E20: Freindship One about half way through the episode when he mentions the metreon cascade. I was looking up more info on it and found your video.

I’m not a big Voyager fan. It ranks towards the bottom for me when it comes to Trek. That said, this episode is probably in my Top 10. It’s up there with In the Pale Moonlight, Measure of a Man, Chain of Command, etc. It’s some of the finest pieces of acting that I’ve ever seen in a Trek show.

The name "Jetrel" seems like an obscured version of the name of the most hated name in WW2 history.

That a bit of a stretch. Jetrel is closer to being Robert Oppenheimer than Adolf.

Yes, I believe the writers were alluding to Oppenheimer. Check out Memory Alpha's record on the episode.

I'm currently watching this episode and it feels like Janeway is acting very out of character. Firstly she trusts a known war criminal, treats him with respect rather than harshness, then invalidates Neelixs feelings and coerced him into getting tested by this Dr despite him constantly stating how he doesn't want to, with very valid reasons. It's horrible to watch.

to be honest, neelix always annoyed me. ESPECIALLY his jealousy concerning anyone other male and kes having anything to do with each other. all that aside, i really enjoyed this episode!

I mean Jetrel is right... the horrors and impact of a WMD is not felt or truly understood until it is USED on a truly impactful target. Just look at the Atomic Bomb. It was used twice right after eachother.... and since then it's never been used again due to the overwhelming destruction of such a weapon. Modern Tactical Nukes have a death zone of around 2 kilometers where everything just vaporizes in a flash as hot as the sun itself.... up to around 5 kilometers where it's just lethal levels of heat, pressure wave, etc. Go out another 8 or so meters from there and you have potentially lethal pressure wave still pushing outward. Lastly is the semi-dangerous aftershocks and lessened pressure wave going out to about 21 kilometers from the center of that explosion. iirc. And that's a tiny little device just used for tactical strikes, not even close to comparison with an ICBM or a Sub-launched Nuclear Missile. Oh and yes, we should not forget the deadly radiation fallout post-explosion that sticks around for around 2 weeks or so.
