Why Walmart Doesn't Accept Apple Pay

Apple Pay was introduced in 2014 and is now accepted by 85% of US retailers. But the country’s most popular store, Walmart, is missing from that list. And it’s because they have a payment system of their own. It started with CurrentC. A company created by a group of retailers, including Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

I'm from the UK and this has blown my mind. I don't think I've ever been in a shop (besides small, local ones) that doesn't accept contactless/Apple Pay. The fact that you need to give away a load of your personal info just to shop there is a huge red flag to me. In my opinion it should not be allowed to track purchases and gather information, unless you give them permission via the use of a separate points app or something (like we have here)

I think a reason is, that in europe credit card fees are limited by law. Some smaller shops in germany do not accept credit cards, but accept german debit cards, because the fees are limited to 0.5 €. That is a reason why many shops accept card payments only above a certain ammount.
@themutedoutcasts
@themutedoutcasts Жыл бұрын
While credit card processing fees could be another reason on the list for Walmart I can confidently say it's definitely because it doesn't allow them to collect people's data. I used to work with credit card processing, when I tell you each individual Walmart processes MILLIONS on the daily from credit card transactions I am not kidding. Not just that, their processing fees percentages are often discounted too, they always tended to be lower than for other businesses. Fees are not the issue. Their unquenchable hunger for your data to market to you and sell it to third parties is the problem.

@@turtato2155 when you use contactless pay, all you’re doing is providing payment information. This very excellently said. Many people don't know specific person data is one of the most valuable if not the most valuable commodity there is. What a billion people can be predicted to be enticed to buy on a weekly and daily basis is a pure cash machine. Apple is an oddity in this regard as they collect very little specific person data. To be sure, Apple does collect a lot of data in the form of anonymized data. This is not specific to a name but is collected as a general geo area and demo group data. This is valuable but is is not close to the value of the specific to the person data. And this specific to the person data is trying to be vacuumed up by almost every place someone frequents, most definitely including Walmart.

Samsung Pay was special in most markets because it worked by emulating the magnetic strip of a credit card (MST) rather than using NFC to process payments, meaning older card readers with no contactless option could still be paid using your phone and no physical card, so theoretically that should work at Wal-mart too. Key word is theoretically, as it turns out Wal-mart actually explicitly blocks Samsung Pay transactions and your payment will be declined if you try this at a register (I know from experience). Unfortunately Samsung has also since dropped MST from modern phones so now there's no reason not to use Google Pay on their phones.

It's not like the 1% cash back difference due to having to use my physical Apple card is a super big deal and I'm sure my not shopping there as much won't make a big difference to them either. I am an early adopter of the blink system. Basically before Apple Pay you could take your credit card if it had blink and wave it instead of putting it in or swiping. So when Apple Pay came out the system was already there to use and a lot of chain stores disabled blink after Apple Pay was announced because Apple Pay used to the same magic wand type of way to scan you digital card. Also this is in response to Obama’s banking plan which made it legal for merchants to charge transaction fees or minimum payments for using a credit card. Previously this practice was against the VISA and Mastercard merchant agreement and reporting a business could get their credit card privileges taken away

Here in Australia most businesses support contactless payment, this is usually done through a credit card, but now some banks are offering contactless payment using your bank account. Walmart and CVS weren't "holdouts". They accepted contactless in the very beginning back in 2011. I paid with Google Wallet there many times. In fact between 2011 and 2015, it worked in 7-11, Target, and almost anywhere that happened to upgrade their terminals to chip card readers. It was really great. But Apple (who was way late to the party) had to be Apple and brand their NFC payment offering "Apple Pay" instead of the already established "Tap to pay", suddenly the those handful of retailers who eventually joined CurrentC all slowly turned off their NFC functionality in their terminals. They all tried their QR code based nonsense, which had a high failure rate, then a couple years later, they just jettisoned the CurrentC crap and turned the NFC back on in their payment readers. Eveone but Walmart, Home Depot, And Lowe's. Have turned the NFC back on. But they all will eventually. They'll have to.

I'm from Poland and tbh i'm very surprised that apple pay doesnt work everywhere in the US, whereas in Poland it doesn't matter in which store you're shopping, because apple pay simply works as a credit card but in your phone and every single store allows you to make contactless payments. You dont even say at the checkout that you're paying with apple pay - you simply say "I want to pay with my card" and if you mentioned apple pay, cashier would be probably confused and said that it's not available.

I remember CurrentC & MCX; wondered what ever happened to them. this is somewhat akin to the EV charging market, where at many locations you have to use a company's app to pay and can't just use a credit card or contactless payment. The EU and member countries are starting to regulate this and forcing the EV charging providers to make CC readers (at least contactless) available. Here in the U.S. any company that accepts NEVI federal funding will have to do the same (yep, even Tesla). Their v4 chargers are just now starting to appear with pay terminals and screens. This will help for CCS vehicles that don't support Tesla's (currently proprietary) plug & charge.

I can just use my phone like the rest of the world. Pretty easy. I wonder if in the United States Walmart will eventually be forced into taking mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google wallet. That seems to be the trend and it’s not going away anytime soon.

I started reading up on Apple Pay a few months ago. The idea of using my iPhone to pay seemed so odd to me, but working in retail since 2016 and circumstances the past couple years sold me on it. I've been legally blind since birth and 2 years ago, a bad infection took more of my sight. These payment terminals and stand-alones are all slightly different. The chip readers are usually on the bottom, but once I encountered one where the card went up top. After setting up Wallet, instead of fumbling with a card and trying to figure out the chip reader (and getting way too many card-read errors), I hold my phone up to the terminal, I get haptic feedback and audible signal when payment goes through, my receipt prints, and done.😁 And unlike a card, the phone doesn't transmit the number to the terminal. Occasionally, an email alert comes through at work warning us that card skimmers were discovered somewhere nearby. Scary stuff. I seldom shop at Walmart, and when I do, I pay cash.
