And yet, after his death in 1799, his name quickly fell into oblivion among the general public and remained there for almost two centuries.

Joseph Bologne would have been born in Guadeloupe in 1745 he is a freed slave, mixed race, he is the son of the colonist Georges Bologne: a colonist close to the French nobility. His father officially recognizes him and settles him in a France where racial distinction is part of an unequal system and where the nobility dominates. Joseph, thanks to his father, finds himself more or less on the good side of this distinction. But, the fact for Joseph to be part of the nobility will not save him from racial discrimination.
