The future eleventh Turkish Sultan Selim II was born in 1524.
At the age of 18, Selim was sent by Sanjakbey to Konya to learn how to govern the country in practice. 2 years later, Sehzade Mehmed dies of smallpox in Manisa. The Sultan appoints Selim sanjakbey of Manisa.
Selim had many concubines. But Nurbanu became the most important woman in his life.
She gave birth to Selim's son Murad, who would become the twelfth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and four daughters.
After ascending the throne, Selim will begin to invite other concubines into his chambers and as a result of this, according to various sources, from six to nine more sons will be born to him.
After the execution of Shehzade Mustafa, Selim officially became the main heir to the throne. Shehzade Bayezid becomes second in line to the Sultan's throne.
Sultan Suleiman, fearing a coup d'etat, sent both sons to govern provinces remote from Istanbul. Şehzade Selim was transferred from Manisa to Konya, and Şehzade Bayezid was sent to Amasya.
Shehzade Bayezid was well aware that while his elder brother Selim was alive, he would not see the throne.
Bayezid began to gather an army. He easily recruited 30 thousand soldiers and advanced to Konya against his brother Selim.
Upon learning of this, Sultan Suleiman regarded this as a rebellion against himself personally. He declared Shehzade Bayezid a rebel, asked for fatfa for his execution and sent an army to help Shehzade Selim.
The brothers' troops met near Konya. Selim's army, thanks to his father's support, had numerical superiority. And they were much better armed. This is what decided the outcome of the battle between the brothers.
Bayezid retreated to Amasya with huge losses. He had no choice but to flee abroad.
He and his four sons find shelter with the Safivid Shah Tahmasp, but not for long.
Shah Tahmasp extradites Bayezid and his family to the Ottoman state.
On September 25, 1561, by order of Sultan Suleiman, Bayezid and his 4 sons were strangled. Bayezid was 36 years old, and his eldest son was 16. A little later, Bayezid’s fifth son, who was only 3 years old, was executed in Bursa.
In the series “The Magnificent Century” we were shown that Selim personally gave the order to execute his brother. Was this really the case?
I think not. Without his father's instructions, Selim did nothing himself. He was a harmless, weak-willed man. And, first of all, thanks to these qualities, the Sultan chose him as his main successor.
After the execution of Bayezid Shehzade, Selim remained the only heir to the throne.
In 1566, at the age of 42, Selim became the eleventh Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
Selim was not particularly interested in governing the country and spent most of his time in the palace.
People gave him the nicknames “Blonde” and “Drunkard” because of his addiction to wine, which, from the point of view of the Koran, was regarded as abuse.
During his reign, all state affairs were led by his son-in-law, the Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu Pasha. He was married to Selim's daughter Esmekhan. And the difference in their ages was 40 years. Bribery and corruption flourished in the country.
The Ottoman Empire fought wars with the Persian Safavid Empire, Hungary and the “Holy League” - an alliance of Spain, Venice, Genoa and Malta. The conquest of Arabia and Cyprus was successfully completed.
The reign of Sultan Selim II lasted only 8 years. He passed away under strange circumstances on December 13, 1574. According to the main version, he slipped in the bathhouse and fell, hitting his head hard on the marble floor. The next day at dawn he died.
Clever and cunning Nurbanu Sultan, together with her son-in-law, Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu, hid Selim's corpse in an ice box. The death of the Sultan had to be kept strictly secret until the son of Selim and Nurban, Murad, who served there as sanjakbey, arrived from Manisa.
Murad reached Istanbul 8 days after his father's death and immediately went to the throne room, where Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu proclaimed him the new Sultan.
On the night of the same day, all the other sons of Sultan Selim II from other concubines were executed according to the Fatih law. The oldest of them was 8 years old, when the mother of one of these shehzade learned about the death of her son, she committed suicide.
Selim was buried in the mosque at the Aya Sophia Cathedral. Next to him lies his beloved wife Nurbanu Sultan.
