WHY do we ❤️ A REASON FOR SPELLING LEVEL C?? And why it might be the BEST SPELLING HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM I’ve come across for 2021!
My 5th grade daughter used to hate spelling because for her, it's hard! But with A REASON FOR SPELLING, it's now her favorite subject!! Come along with us for a few homeschool days in the life of a homeschool family, (only it won’t be full days...just spelling lessons) as we accomplish a week of homeschool spelling lessons and see how this homeschool spelling curriculum works. I'll also share a ton of other spelling practice ideas and homeschool spelling hacks that will add some variety into the otherwise monotonous practice. These ideas are sure to encourage and help any struggling speller.

That really says a lot, that she used to hate spelling and now considers it her favorite subject! I am also much more likely to do fun things for learning when it's already written down for me in the curriculum and I don't have to make up everything myself.

Thank you! I found the same when I was researching, so I’m glad my video was more helpful! We haven’t continued with it only bc we switched to a lower level of TGATB language arts and I was satisfied with how they did spelling (they also had fun ways to reinforce it.) but if I hadn’t switched, I would’ve stuck with it.

I see that this is a few years old- wondering if you continued with this spelling program? I'm making the rounds for next year- I've got it narrowed down to this one, Spelling Power, and All About Spelling. I will be using it for two 11-year-olds.

I didn’t stick with it. But it wasn’t bc of the program. I really did like it. It was because we started using the good and the beautiful and I was satisfied with how they quizzed spelling. I’ve used spelling power before too. If your child doesn’t need the “fun” it’s very effective. I only used the basic book for my son. He didn’t need much fluff for practicing, but they do have a box of fun ideas. I’ve never used all about spelling but I know people who have. It has a great reputation. :)

okay, so between this and the IEW phonetic zoo for spelling which do you prefer and why? I have one TERRIBLE speller and one decent speller and am struggling with curriculums
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 11 ай бұрын
It’s so hard to say bc I think they’re both great depending on what the issues are. Oh one tic zoo is less teacher intensive and simpler. If you have a decent speller, I’d definitely do the zoo route. I switched FROM phonetic zoo to a reason for handwriting for my middle child bc she needed different ways to practice her words. And A reason for facilitates that for me. Phonetic zoo you’d have to come up with yourself, creative ways to practice if you wanted variety. But a reason for requires a little more teacher help. They are both great, though! And Andrew Pudewa’s talk titled, “Spelling and the Brain” may entice you to even consider it for you struggling speller. He makes points about the auditory part being so important! So it depends. I know that doesn’t help much!

Your kids are as funny as you :) And watching you teach your oldest daughter is like seeing me teach my oldest daughter. SO SIMILAR it's crazy. We've used A Reason for Handwriting but not Spelling. This was so fun to see! I'm on Level D of Logic of English Foundations with my younger daughter and we LOVE it. But when I look at LOE Essentials it looks so complicated and like zero fun! We aren't planning to use it. This spelling curriculum looks great.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 жыл бұрын
😜 LOE Essentials is a big leap, IMO. We never made it to level D though in foundations bc I was paying attn to the ages. Doesn’t it say foundations is for ages 4-7? So we switched to essentials when she was 8. It was a lot more work and a lot more dry. I will say, however, she really enjoyed the logic of English Reading curriculum. It taught key word outlines. And began teaching concepts of writing papers. We were excited when we came together for LOE foundations. That was just not the case for essentials. We dreaded it then. And being off level with the spelling made it worse. Some things you just have to piece together for some kids. So if you don’t do LOE essentials, what are you thinking about? My son just switched to the good and the beautiful language arts. That’s an intriguing one also.
@faithfullyinfertile

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Right now, I am just planning to have her do Language Lessons from Masterbooks like my older daughter, however, she struggles with LA (but LOE has helped her make HUGE strides!) so I am not sure LLFLE will be enough to keep her momentum going. I may need to supplement, especially the spelling. I've been looking at Spelling You See, but after your review I think she would enjoy A Reason for Spelling. It will probably be trial and error seeing what will work for her but I'm about 95% sure we won't be moving into LOE Essentials. LOE Foundations is SO GOOD that I am surprised their next level isn't as good. I mean, I am sure it is good as far as learning the concepts but the lessons look long, dry and boring and we don't do that in our homeschool. Haha!!

@@faithfullyinfertile I forgot you also do LLFLE also! I just pinned another comment that I had forgotten to show in my video!! But for kids like ours...,fun being of the utmost importance, I thought it an important point to make. The fun ways to spell (play doh, etc) ...those ideas are different every week. So it’s not the same choices. (That’s one thing my daughter does not like about LLFLE...the drawing the Bible story. She’s getting bored drawing every week. That’s why TGATB is starting to catch my eye. Variety in the art projects. So we will see.
@faithfullyinfertile

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan oh yes my daughter doesn’t like drawing the pictures each week either. I just take that page and make it our own. She does copywork from our read aloud most weeks or from a book she is reading or our monthly memory verse. Then if she wants to sketch she does but I don’t make a big deal over it. I mainly use Language Lessons for the grammar/mechanics/writing. I love that the hands on activities in A Reason for Spelling are different. This breed of child definitely needs variety 🤪 Your daughter was seriously cracking me up. She sounded JUST like my daughter!! Oh and TG&TB.... I’m sure you’ve heard all the controversy about it being written by a Mormon? I’ve decided if I have the choice to pick a curriculum with a Biblical worldview I’m going to go that route. Even though TG&TB doesn’t teach their Mormon beliefs blatantly in the curriculum, their curriculum is still written through the filter of Mormonism b/c that is what they believe and what we believe affects everything! ❤️
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 жыл бұрын
@@faithfullyinfertile yes I know about TGAB. I debated about that fact also for awhile. But I had others friends who were using it and said it a curriculum meant to teach those specific skills. I’m the teacher, not the curriculum. And from the little we’ve done, they do have Bible scripture that hasn’t been in conflict with anything we believe. But as the teacher, I can teach it how I see fit. But having said that, everybody has to do according to their own conscience. I certainly wouldn’t fault anybody for choosing an alternative based on their convictions. I totally understand that position. And if there was an alternative to TGAB who did curriculum in the same way, I’d consider that. But I haven’t seen a comparable. There’s really nothing else like it, especially their science.

Are the teachers guides necessary?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
Without the teachers manual, you won’t have the story, the word dictation sentences (which you COULD come up with yourself) but also some of the exercises are dictated. So in the student manual, some of the exercises has sentences with blanks for many of the words. Those are dictated from the teachers manual. Also, the pretext and post tests word list….technically, you could get the list from the student manual….you’d have to copy it first. So it’s up to you if you want to fill in those gaps. (There may be more instruction that I’m not thinking of, what I show in the video is a fairly typical week. ) Hope that helps.

Would you say this spelling could be done by the child without purchasing the teachers manual?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
It might be difficult. Some of it is dictation and so that wouldn’t be obvious from the child’s manual. Those exercises are like Mom dictating sentences and the child fills in the blank so the student manual only has the blanks. This exercise practices writing sentences and using grammar.. You’d lose the read aloud story. You could probably make it work…..but you’d lose SOME. You’d have make the word lists yourself to dictate the tests. Not impossible.

Why do you think she retains the spelling from this program better and did not from Phonetic Zoo? What do you think makes the difference?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Жыл бұрын
I don’t know why except it was more practice? The activities to practice were fun. Phonetic zoo, you just keep taking the test until you pass it twice. The list is based on a spelling rule that they repeat in a poem. She’d pass the test but when it came back to review it, she’d fail. I don’t know. My daughter has ADHD which definitely complicates things. 😉

You'd think that, and there is some of that. Sometimes that is true in that I remember what I was thinking (or not thinking 😜) at that age. But I am actually finding that many of the things that worked for me or motivated me aren't working with them and I'm not sure why 🤷‍♀️(even ADHD has differing levels and types like autism).
