I am 19 years old and the thing I appreciate most about my parents is they were a parent to me when I was living with them, they didn’t treat me as a friend until I became an adult!! My parents are my best friends now along with my husband! You are doing an amazing job! Just keep being that parent that sets standards and one day you guys will be best friends!

My brother had to choose a whole new group of friends in high school, as well as I did. You are who you choose to be around. Once you realize that, your mind frame changes. My friends were just doing bad things and my brothers were doing bad bad things. We learned from it and turned out just fine. You are doing the right thing as parents (I'm 43 so I'm just learning but I have a 13 and 17 year old too). It is your responsibility to make your kids see when they are doing wrong. I totally get it and am with you.

As a mom of 2, I loved the ending of this video. We are not here to be their friend, we need to be their mother, parent them and protect them with everything we have as they are our world. They can’t and won’t see it until their older or have kids of their own. You’re a great mother Heather. I truly look up to you!

As a 27 year old I can say say I appreciate my parents being parents when I was younger. They’re like my best friends now, I am so thankful for how they raised me too. At the time I obviously wasn’t happy lol but you’re a great mom to the girls and there’s no need to explain the girls being teenagers and making mistakes that we all live and learn from growing up.

Heather, I’m with you 100%. Do what’s best for your family. If her peers are already acting like this now, lord knows how they’ll be in highschool. Kudos to you for wanting to protect Ellie from that. I was once in her shoes, and my parents showed me some tough love and I was grounded for ab 5 months (and didn’t have my phone) and Looking back I’m so glad they did because I was going down a destructive path. Those “friends” I had are no where to be found. Keep doing you, Mama Heather. You’re doing a great job🤍

Wooo. Yes girl! I get you Momma. My youngest son was making some poor decisions and we decided to make a move for the same reason. Moved 4 hours away in hopes that our son would have a fresh start. He did do better as far as school went. You have to do the best you can for your kids. Parent first, friend when they grow up. Plenty of time to be their friend when they are an adult. You only get one chance when they’re young to parent them. Good choice Momma.

I'm not even a parent myself and I know that you're doing the right thing, Heather. Ellie is 13, her choices have consequences - that's the lesson here. You're trying to teach her that. I always tell my mom that I'd prefer someone be mad at me for telling the truth ( and they either get over it or they don't, it's their choice at the end of the day ) than caught telling a lie. Being a teenager is definitely a hard spot to be in, I think we can all agree on that - and I didn't have the easiest home life either but at least I can say I never did anything that got me in major trouble ( as far as I can tell anyway - might have been confused about some stuff that inadvertently got me yelled at but that was about it ).

Miss Heather, as a parent of 2 daughters, I completely understand your dilemma in making sure the kids like the area you live in. I am going to say, I am rather old school and when it came time to move, my parent's never involved us kids. We moved because that is what the parent's decided was best for the family. Please don't think I am putting you down for your decisions. What I believe some of the younger generation doesn't understand is this. Miss Heather and Mr. Mark are the Matriarch and Patriarch of this family. They are the one's who are in charge of deciding what is best for the four of them, especially after some of the issues they came across a few years back and moved into a secured community for their own safety. Please keep up the great work of protecting your family and providing for them. You said it best when you said "We are not here to be their friends. We are here to their parent's and their protectors." Congratulations on the new house and can't wait to see how you make it yours.

Its so hard with electronics. We just moved from NY to FL. I have a 7th grader we put her in a small private school. She loves it she found a nice group of friends and she doesn't spend much time on her phone anymore. Sports is a big distraction from the phone. Plus the school we have her in is very safe and very picky when it comes to who is enrolled, behavior is a big part of admission to the school

I'm 21 and still live at home. I live in a really small town. So at 14 I had a lot of freedom within reason. Like I was allowed to go out and be out in town until 12pm. Once I was 16 I was allowed out as long as I wanted as long as I told my mom if I wasn't coming home. This being said I've always been against drugs and alcohol and partying. So my mom was really trusting. But I also was not allowed in anyones car unless they'd been driving for a full year (safety reasons). Also I had to be respectful no causing problems or doing anything illegal or anything (I think that's obvious). But my mom's whole thing was if you stay out late you still have to go to school and reap what you sow. I also had a job at 14 and had to have a job or I wasn't allowed to have any luxury items... only necessities. She'd help pay for things if I needed help but I had to pay for the things I wanted. I also had to get good grades and be respectful to her and her house. We've always been close but as a teenager see started to be both a friend and a parent. Once I was 17 (graduated highschool) we were pretty much just friends same rules applied but I had more freedom I could leave town if I wanted I don't have to tell her were I'm going or when I'll be home just that I'm not going to be. Although at this point in my life I'm very sick with a heart condition and so I have pretty stricked rules again (for my safety) But honestly I can say that your kids might not appreciate what you're doing for them now but as they age and mature and adapt to the real world they will.

our school is the best in the state and the best in our district. other schools have a lot more fights than ours but ours had a freshman fight today and because fights r so rare the entire school knew within 30 minutes. and last year in middle school, our school was a really good school that never has any incidents. but there was one video...... our district is the best in the state, so fights r so uncommon, in any other district fights happen once a week, ours happen once a semester.

That is a good idea that private schools are better if I worked in another school I would want private just because I feel it’s no longer safe things have changed so much

i think it’s normal for a kid Ellie’s age to act like that when her friends are around. I’m not saying it’s right but i did the same thing at that age. I grew out of it and realized it’s not respectful.

you guys are the one family channel i’ve stuck with and loved. Heather you are a great parent. My mom parents pretty darn similar to you so i completely understand your perspective. I surrounded myself with the wrong crowd of people from 8th-10th and i can say it did make me act out. Being around your parents with someone who you’re friends with or like tends to make kids act out. i’ve been there and done that. i quickly came to realize those people weren’t it and i realize how immature they really were. idk what exactly ellie does with her friends but what my friends and I were doing was stuff that could end is jail time.

You go Heather! My parents didn’t discipline me or my siblings as well as they should have but they did scare the crap out of me a lot which is why I’m tough minded today and follow rules unless it is absolutely necessary to break them. Ellie is 13, she’s just being a teenager but sometimes things go too far including the fight at school that Ellie recorded or watched. She should have told someone, but then again her school seems to be negligent.
