Hi, Max - this is a very interesting topic to me because I am fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and took Italian when I was 22. I did not speak English till I was five. I have now taken Russian two months, and my Russian is about as good as my Italian! I think it's all a question of interest. Growing up, I didn't like the Chinese texts I had to read in school, so I gravitated towards English literature instead. I loved everything Italian, but when I was 22, Umberto Eco was the only native writer I liked - and even in English, he was a challenge. I am shocked at my progress in Russian, frankly, because, although you and others online have provided such fabulous resources, my dyslexia when it comes to reading and writing Russian was an initial stumbling block. But the thing is, my reason for learning Russian is not to study it or pass exams or impress some guy: I came into the language because you guys have an incredible trove of literature and art that was not open to me during my growing up years - when you were the USSR. So, I guess, in spite of myself, I am learning Russian exactly like a child, singing kids songs, reading kids books, watching Cheburaska ...!!! In fact, learning Russian has even expanded my Chinese and Italian vocabulary! I do beg pardon for this long essay - thanks for reading!

Usually, I try to write comments in Russian but I think it will take too long (and I still have flash cards to practice...) 1. I watch Russian TV shows. (Using a VPN service) I can pretend to be in, for example, St. Petersburg and then I can watch a lot of TV shows for free from Russian television channels. Some of my favorite TV shows are Кухня, Мажор, Интерны. (No subtitles this way, tho.) 3ears.com has a bunch of TV shows with full Russian and English subtitles. On Netflix, you can select shows based on what audio language they offer, so if you're looking for Russian audio with English subtitles, give that a try. 2. I watch Soviet-era movies and cartoons. Sometimes they have subtitles (in English) and sometimes they do not. At this point I am watching the films for pleasure. I intend (at some point) to use them as study material. On KZfaq there is an enormous collection of rather wonderful Soviet-era movies with English subtitles. A couple I've watched recently have been Ирония Судьбы and Бриллиантовая рука. Both of them are fantastic. I have a whole list of them I collected from recommendations on HelloTalk which I need to collate. I'll post them when I get a chance. 3. Podcasts in Russian. Like Craig, I am a fan of the очень по-рускки podcast. I also listen to all of Daria's podcasts and RussianEasy.com from Elvira. I often replay those if I am trying to learn a particular verb she has already covered in a show. 4. Pronunciation drills. I have bought 4 different pronunciation courses (so far). The one I have listened to the most and practiced the most is Olga Jerrold's. It's also the least expensive - I think it was $10 or $20. Well worth it. Highly recommend it. 5. Listening to native Russian speakers on Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, HelloTalk. I think it's worth pointing out that you can follow native speakers who aren't, like, actually Russian teachers/tutors. This can be an amazing way to hear quote real spoken Russian unquote - how do you find people to follow? Using something like Instagram, for example, I follow some geographical hashtags (one of them is #грузия) because some day I want to go to Georgia (republic of, not the state - I've already been there.) When I see someone speaking in a story or a post that I find interesting I often follow them. Now I get beautiful pictures or videos of Georgia along with audio usually in Russian. (Sometimes in Georgian. Almost never in English on the Russian hashtag.) 6. I listen to music at work every so often - not daily. But when I do, I usually pick something that's in Russian. There are probably some others I'm leaving out but those are the ones that come up very frequently.

One of things I like to do (that I feel like is quite effective) is take a song, print it out, and then translate each unknown word on the back. Once I can understand I work on pronunciation, slowing down the original audio track and attempting to sing along. I'm currently working through Dima Bilan's Chasi. I love it! So much new vocab:) Thank you for another awesome video, Max. They've definitely become part of my "Russian Curriculum." My other audio sources are the show "The Sniffer" on Netflix and the channel "Be Fluent in Russian" on KZfaq.

I began learning Russian by myself in 2017, and I still study by my own. I began with the alphabet (totally different from our alphabet), 'cause it's the only way for me to advance. And then I went on with the basic courses this site rusogratis.com provides, to understand the basics of the language and the most characteristic grammar aspects of it And then I went farther. I began searching for music in Russian and ended up finding great songs! I love music and I'm always searching for new songs, besides it happens that my favorite singer is Russian (Sergey Lazarev) and I've even managed to learn some of the lyrics of his songs by heart!! Also, I began to search for videos in KZfaq and found great YT channels of people like you that invest some of their time in teaching us your language and even part of your culture. I love to listen to all of you especially when you speak in Russian because it's the way to get used to the language and the accent I still need to learn more. There are some aspects I need to reinforce. My listening skills have improved a lot, but I still struggle to understand when a native speaker speaks way too fast. I can undertand aproximately 70-80% of what you say in this video without subtitles, and the same with other guys that make educational videos in Russian, but it's because you don't speak so fast. But then when I watch an interview on Ivan Urgant's show , for example, I can't understand as much as I would like. I guess it's a matter of time to get used to "real-life" conversational speed Thanks so much for your effort and dedication to share your language with all of us. Your videos are great. You have no idea how much I needed this ! Motivation at lowest ever.🙄 Writing in english...pfff... I (usually !)watch Starmedia films with english subs, also listen to russian pop and folk songs and use my old "Assimil" coursebook and CDs(!)in the car -which is French to Russian . Also watch Anna Cher and you of course! 😉

Video has a beautiful atmosphere and music. About the grown-up language learning capabillities, from some personal experiences and from some expert opinions, only thing that stands in the way for the grown-up is in emotional sphere. A kid has completely open heart towards language learning, and it doesn't have to fulfill expectations or get good notes. A child-like learning simply needs no inhibitions of any kind, and that is all. And, a kid does not need almost all hours awake in 6 years for that - with 2 and a half it already speaks almost perfectly, albeit with still a small vocabulary.

I don't know...Maybe it's because I'm not learning russian for work or because I need to but I really don't get why people want to learn it as fast as possible. For me, the important thing is not to learn it fast but not to give up on it. Whatever language you learn fast you can also forget really fast if you stop practicing. That method you mention reminds me when I decided to retake french. As I have spent years without practicing and was too lazy to take an exam I started from basic. The teacher was french and all the lesson was zero spanish. I ended up helping my classmates to understand what was going on there haha. For some it worked but for many others it was too hard and eventually gave up. If the teacher gives too much information it can be so overwhelming that it leads the student to believe the whole learning process is just an impossible task. And focus and concentration is very important. That word per word mindfulness. I listened in Easy Russian clips every day for thrice a day for months and yet I still can't grasp it. I fall to laziness which is listening to a foreign language while doing something. It just don't work that way. It has to be your 95% attention on it. I listened to yours, to Dasha. I also have Pimsleur and Michel Thomas Beginner. And some contents from RussianPod101. Yes, I'm dedicated. It has finally become a hobby of mine that I don't need to be motivated anymore. Four more months and I'll celebrate 2 years of learning Russian!! :)

But I still love to listen to Russian speakers. The Christian school my wife works at is primarily Slavic. Ukrainian, Romanian, Moldavian, Russian as well as some Korean, Chinese and Japanese students. It's very International. Any way, this was part of my motivation to learn the language (besides always wanting to learn it). So, thank you for what you are sharing and teaching. God bless.

Great video. I understood 80 percent without any subtitles. I undrestand you but I couln't construct senteces like that. I enjoy listening to you and Darija from Real Russian Club because of way you two speak wich is great for beginners. I always think that I could / should learn and do more and better than I do because my native language is one of slavic languages and has some similarity with russian and it should be easier for me than someone whose native is english. But in fact those similarities can be confusing (very similar word but different meaning) as much as similarities simplify learning often.

Today I think I’ll write in English because I think it will take me too long to respond to you in Russian on this issue. First off great video. And if I understood you correctly in this video....I do very much agree with you that listening is the most important component to learning a foreign language. Granted I think that quality of listening counts more than quantity of listening… At least for adults. In the past besides studying the language in general..I use try to listen to Russian broadcasts and podcasts in the like While doing house cleaning or some type of other work. And generally I found this not to be an effective way to learn for me personally. So Now I just try to at least listen to Russian for at Hour or two a day. But in that hour or two I completely concentrate on what is being said in that conversation or lecture, etc. This seems to have improved my listening and understanding skills a bit. And I’m happy with my progress. I also agree that one shouldn’t concentrate too much on individual words as opposed to the general idea of what being talked about in a given conversation, lecture, etc. The general idea of the conversation is the most important thing. As for comparing oneself to others. I honestly never had that problem. Maybe it’s because of my background and sports. but I’ve always competed against myself and forced Myself to improve. Also when I took on the Russian language I knew I didn’t have a particular talent toward languages. I see the language as an adversary I have to fight and conquer. I know that’s not the most friendly way of thinking about learning a language. But it’s the thing that gives me motivation to learn it and to press forward even when I feel that I’m not doing well In my studies. Anyways that’s my thoughts on this video. Спасибо большое Макс.

Hi Max, You are so correct! The way a child learns is by osmosis, and as adults we can't do that anymore. Also I think our minds gets lazy after the age of 15. What ever the incentive is to learn changes for each person, but if you really want to do it nothing can get in your way. Maybe I missed the episode how and why you speak English so well! (Very Well) What age did you start learning English? Your method of teaching Russian is fun and enjoyable and I am once again building my vocabulary.

Hi Maks! Я совсем согласна о том, что способ изучения языков у детей и у взрослых совсем другой, а также их потребности совсем не равны! Значит, у маленьких детей не только мозг гораздо пластичнее чем у взрослых, но им достаточно осваивать ограниченный и очень простой языковой запас, а мир взрослых гораздо сложнее! По своему опыту совсем не стоит, т.е. это лучше не ... ещё лучше сказать: обязательно не надо (!) сравнивать свой достигнутый уровень знания (и вообще знаний) с единоклассными, с друзьями, с коллегами.... Во 1ых, знание человека вряд ли размеришь! Затем, у каждого свой путь, свой ритм, свой способ изучения ... Сравнения обычно не помогают, а имеют противоположный эффект! Это слово Одинокой Вольчицы! 🐺 Ауг! Про материалы изучения: да, ещё раз по своему опыту, напр. и сейчас изучая Китайский, лучше всего следить за привлекающие тебя по содержанию уроки одного и того же Учителя/Учительницы, чей голос и стиль речи тебе нравятся, таким образом большинство тяжёлой работы на плечах его/её (😁), а тебе легче будет шаг за шагом добиться наилучших результатов! ☺️

I've been trying to learn Russian for 3 months now. I have made some progress, and try to talk Russian to my Ukrainian friend and her mother, but I feel like especially the last month, it's hard to learn more. And when they reply to me in their fluent Russian, it's very hard for me to follow. But she says I'm doing great and that when I talk Russian, it's very good, so I guess I'm still improving even if I feel like I'm not. I've watched a Russian series on Netflix, "better than us" (луце дла люди?) and found it good enough to follow, even if I didn't understand everything. A good show for those learning.

I have lots of problems understanding my target languages (Russian, Czech and German). The best method I found is YOUR shadowing method, which I use whenever I can find text or subtitles.

I must have been reading your mind. I started to comment that you should compare yourself to yourself, but then you said that in the video...lol. Regarding audio materials which I use, I have a great opportunity because I work in an office, where I can listen to Russian all day while I'm working. I like to turn on the 'repeat' setting, and listen to downloaded podcasts. As you know, I have downloaded the audio files which you provide in your TPRS youtube videos. As a beginner, I would repeatedly listen to 1 podcast or 1 TPRS, and answer questions aloud. At some point in my progress, I wanted variety, so I would create a playlist of 5 or 6 files that I turn the 'repeat' setting on for. Some had a female voice, some male. Some slow, Some fast. Some just listening, some TPRS (I answer questions aloud). I like fast native speed Russian about slang words/expressions from ochenporusski.com which are short. I learned about words like круто, закрадить, облом, итд. Unfortunately at work, I cannot listen to streaming radio, but here is a list of what I use: russianpodcast.eu (I was happy that yesterday I did not look at the PDF, & understood over 90% of her #18 podcast 'музыка' the first time I listened to it). realrussianclub.com ochenporusski.com Russian With Max audio files available on TPRS videos I think in addition to the quantity of words we listen to in a day, there is a very important concept I would call 'reminders'. We are constantly reminded of many words in our own native languages in our surroundings. This is why I use 'repeat'. When I managed a metal shop in Las Vegas, I spoke Spanish everyday. After about 10 months, one of the guys asked me how to say 'hammer' in English. I couldn't remember until the next day. I forgot my own native language!!! It was not because I was speaking Spanish every day. It was because I was NOT speaking English so I hadn't used the word 'hammer' recently. There had been no recent reminder of that word being used. Of course, I'm going to listen to this video more times not only to find the words I missed, but to reinforce all the words I did recognize and understand.

hi Max, I agree with what you said. the learning process of children is quite elusive. if you start learning a new language after the age of six it’s very unlikely you become bilingual no matter the amount of time you dedicate to the study. likewise, very few can become accomplished gymnasts, footballers or tennis players if they pick up the discipline after the age of six. I check my progress every six months by doing this test masterrussian.com/tests/14-russian-level.htm what I like the most is translating audio texts and revising them every month.

Thank you for this video, I found that even if I didn't understand it all, I could at least get the gist. Obviously I watch your videos but I also like the Real Russian Club (when I sometimes even have to speed them up if they are too slow!) and sometimes Amazing Russian. I am also a great fan of opera and Russian songs, but that can sometimes lead to a rather bizarre vocabulary ("No sleep, no rest for my tormented soul...." for example!) but I listen a lot to the art songs and folk songs such as Жди меня, журавли, горячий снег, нежность and of course Слушай Ленинград. I lislten a lot to Hvorostovsky's recordings as he had such clear diction - you can hear every word.

You can get to A2 with childrens TV but that's about it. Here's a great Russian kids show kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKqjn5VquJiWcZs.html don't expect them to ever talk about adult topics like romance love war crime or moral ambiguity or even to used college level vocabulary. But yeah, if you're into it you can learn up to level A2 just like a kid.

Listen, talk with Russian speakers, turn off subtitles... I have a strict teacher, she makes me memorize and recite. It's hard for the old guy, but I think it helps. I think you summed it up in another video, "it takes a lifetime."
