We decided to homeschool two years ago for a variety of reasons, and I’m so glad that we chose this life. Now we have a confident daughter who can read, isn’t dealing with performance anxiety in the classroom, and is able to learn at her pace. Additionally, she’s always been an outgoing child, but oh man, she loves, loves, loves to communicate with anyone. Being outside the classroom interacting with people of all ages every week has also made her more observant of others too. She has more situational awareness, notices the behaviors of others, and sees day to day interactions and learns helpful insights from them.

Omg yes! Our oldest is a bit of a perfectionist and I could foresee performance anxiety being an issue if she had stayed in a public classroom! And my youngest has just bloomed over the last couple of months! Best decision ever for the same reasons! 🙌🙌

Totally agree. Most teachers are doing their very best to meet most of the needs of most of their students. And a solid public education system is so necessary because not every family is equipped or ready to homeschool, but where it's possible, it's almost always going to be a far superior experience (not counting cases of just blatant neglect or abuse) if for no other reason than "the numbers game" as you put it. One person (or even two) cannot effectively teach 20+ children at all their different levels. Crowd control is their primary objective - with some learning happening somewhere - hopefully. Scheduling is huge too. And I just can't even with lockdown drills for young children, much less "this is not a drill" scenarios.

Yessss. We chose to homeschool for some of the same reasons. I am able to educate my daughter on her level in a method that works for her. I can control her exposure to content I am not ok with and or get to explain difficult things in a way that we would want. She is not put in scary lockdown situations. She is well socialized and has many friends. I know all of her friends and their parents. She also gets to go to the zoo, library, park, beach, vacations.... with her family anytime we want to and gets to just enjoy. We've only done kindy and we prolly spend less than an hour a day on 'school' spaced out with lots of play; but she is far ahead of students in traditional public school. It really seems like the best choice for us.

Yes! I knew I was going to home school when I was pregnant (1986) with my first child due to my own school experiences. (Not many people were home schooling in the 80's and 90's.) My children are all well adjusted interesting intelligent adults who graduated from college (and two have post graduate degrees) and good jobs. Now I am home schooling my granddaughter (almost age 6) for all the reasons you mentioned and others. :-)

That’s wonderful that you are able to pass down the gift of homeschooling to your granddaughter! I hope to be able to do that with my girls children if they want me to! 🥰

Omg I relate to this! My daughter is finish kinder at our local public school and everything is spot on. what you mentioned about full lunches coming back is so true! My daughter loooooovvves to talk and her teacher at both conferences would tell me she struggled with staying in her seat and getting work done. Even took recess away a few times for her to get her work done because she rather “disrupt” her other classmates. I am so glad she is done with public school in a few days. I just kept her there to until the end because I lacked the confidence to pull her out. It felt like a relief when I called the school she won’t be returning next year

I’m so sorry mama! Thats exactly what we were dealing with and we did the same thing - let her continue until Kindergarten graduation (to give me time to physically and mentally prepare to Homeschool her). It felt so right writing the email to withdraw her! Don’t worry, you’ve got this! You have been your daughters primary teacher since she was born - homeschooling is just the natural progression of being her mother🥰. And the best part is that now there are SO many homeschooling resources/curriculum available that weren’t when we were kids! 🙌 you are going to have an amazing year!

Great job!!! We just completed our 5th year of homeschooling. There were so many reasons why we pulled our girls. A big reason was that my oldest was finishing up her 4th grade year and was only able to read at 2nd grade level. Everyone at the school kept telling us she was doing great. I have my children do the same reading assessment at the end of every school year. I just gave it today and my oldest daughter, who is going into 10th grade, tested at level 10 which is 10th grade level. It reassures me that what we are doing IS working and to continue even on the hard days.

That is such great confirmation that you were right in following your mama intuition! It's especially tough when our intuition pushes us to go against the grain of what's "normal", but it's generally right move and in your case it was absolutely the right decision to follow it! So happy for you and your daughter!

It says a lot that you mentioned several times that it wasn't the teachers fault. Teachers receive a lot of grief from parents who forget that their child is one in a sea of kids in that classroom. I cannot imagine the amount of stress a public school teacher is under, and I have to remind myself those people who are teachers are doing it because they love the profession and the kids. I pulled my son out of his charter school after 6th grade. He had continued to advance in grades even though he was well behind with learning the material. My daughter will be a kindergartener this year, but will not go to a public school - she is going to a micro-school two days a week starting in the fall.

Exactly! I commend teachers for what they do because it is a thankless job with limited resources and for very little pay. I dont fault them for the problems that are public education as an over all system, which is broken and doesn’t suit the majority of kids. However not every family has the ability to Homeschool so we need some form of public education. I’m just not sure what the answer is the fix the problems. That’s wonderful that you have a micro-school near you! 🥰

Yes! I believe most are coming from a good place when they ask this, but they just don’t have any practical knowledge of homeschooling. They don’t realize how much freedom and opportunity we DO have to socialize! 🙌

Hello Mary! New subscriber here. Thank you for sharing your whys. These resonate with me as a mom of 3, pregnant with #4, and my oldest is 7 going into second grade, then next up is my son who is 5 going into Kindergarten this year. She goes to the charter school and my son is going to go there too, but the things you've stated in this video have been going through my head as well. The problem is...I work full time. My job is virtual which is nice. How did you make working from home work with home schooling? Or did you quit your job to homeschool? I am very curious about this and I appreciate any insights you can share.

Hi Jessica! I worked remote full time and homeschooled the girls (they were a brand new 4 and 6 year old for context) for almost 4 months until I finally quit my remote job. I think it was tough for me to juggle both because my kiddos were on the younger side and needed me more, but I also had an external client who it was my full responsible to support and needed me a lot as well. I think if it had been one or the other I could have done it longer, but since both needed me a lot, I was becoming burned out and it wasn’t fair to my girls. I was also facing a forced moved to another city if I wanted to keep my job, so the timing made sense for me to quit. It was a sacrifice and we have to be careful with money, but I don’t regret it one minute! I think it depends on how demanding your job is and how independent your children are. I would check out Ashlee’s channel @gatheredandgroundedhomewchool - she works full time remotely and homeschools 3, but I know her mother in law helps her with her youngest and taking the kids to coop. It’s definitely doable with the right support and resources! 🥰

My husband and I decided we wanted to homeschool while I was pregnant because we were youth pastors and we saw how insecure the public school kids were compared to the homeschoolers. They were so self-assured and resistant to peer pressure. It was actually sad to see how the social pressure of fitting in from 4 and on harmed these kids self worth.

It’s breaks my heart for public school kids who are thrown into forced social situations, rather than naturally interacting and conversing with people of all ages. But that’s also such a testament to how homeschooling creates such well rounded people and I’ve been fortunate to see that same confidence build within my own children in only the past year! 🥰
